Curious to see how many fellow fabbers work in call centres? Also the general opinion of uk call centres? I've been working in one since feb having spent 5 yrs in retail. Personally prefer call centre in terms of treatment of staff,is more difficult not seeing someone when face to face a smile/nod is appropriate but don't think I could return to retail

I've worked for a lot of call centers. I prefer being shouted at by customers than trying to sell them stuff though

I don't work in a call centre, although majority of my time in the office is spent on the phone.

I personally feel Uk call centres are much better than the ones based abroad. You get a better service and more importantly someone who understands what's being said.

I hate sales aspect. Understand it but still hate it. I do like the 90% of nice customers with the odd funny stupid moany ones that just think because I'm a young woman can treat me like shit.

Also telling me can't understand my "thick "Scottish accent is insulting and makes me not want to help u!

I CANT STAND Foreign call centers, I play call center roulette. If foreigner speaks - hang up, if British accent - talk.

I worked for Sky in Livi and the amount of people that said "I was speaking to someone Scottish" was amazing.

If I ever come across an irate or rude customer, I will calmly ask them to repeat what they said lol

Isn't there different terms for different ones? For example I want to renew my car insurance and I phone admiral and they try getting me the "better deal" or phoning the mobile company to fix a problem, etc. Comparing to someone who phones me out of the blue to sell me something I don't even need, nevermind want?

I don't think they mean thick accent as in stupid, they mean broad Scottish accent. It is a hard one to decipher especially on the phone.

Never worked a call centre but have supplied tech. support to many. Seems like a bloody hard job. Those I call I have patience and tolerance for, and try to get the business done quick and clean as I know they are on the clock.

Still have no time for those that call me cold calling by phone, email, or door to door sales people invade my space and annoy me.

Hated working in a call centre and lasted 2 weeks. Love retail and did that for 10 years. I much prefer face to face

Titz Towers, North Notts

I've worked in quite a few and enjoyed it; but to be frank, give me a job shovelling crap and I'd find 5 reasons why it is great before the first tea break.

What I liked to do was sneek funnies into the conversation, such as when I was talking to a lady who mentioned she was pestered by moles, I said about my uncle who got that frustrated, he buried one alive when he finally caught it......

Wonderful cartoon in Private Eye the other year, man on hold to a call centre, recorded message saying, 'your call is important to us, but not that important that we employ more operators.'

I know they mean thick as in strong but it's still insulting seeing as I don't have a particularly strong accent compared to some people I work with I'm easy to understand esp when I have to dumb down to people saying things 1 slow word at a time

I love accents and often listen to the way people speak rather than what they have to say. Wonder if someone with a Rab C Nesbit accent would be able to understand the likes of Arfur Daley?

Worked in many call centres when i was younger! The last one was for one of the big 6 energy companies they treat us like crap and half the time tge customers werent to pleasant either. Sympathy goes out to people who wanted to pay but couldnt but non for people who could! Main example was a former England player who had a song about him that sven should pick him! What a foul mouthed arrogant dick! His missus on the other hand was lovely!

I have worked in two different call centres and I can honestly say they were the worst jobs I ever had. I also hate dealing with call centres as I know I am dealing with poorly motivated, low paid people who's only real interest is getting home at the end of their shift.

Newcastle and Gateshead

there is a huge difference between inbound and outbound call centres

inbound isn't the worst thing in the world, they tend to do the telesales/customer services things...

I couldn't do outbound, especially cold calling.... it would get to me, you have to be a different type of person to do that......
