Just been to the local supermarket to get some milk.

I paid 48p in copper and 52p on my card and tomorrow, I'm going to go on a 2hr walk just to borrow some money of a relative

not that skint luckily, though when my son was born i lived on bran flakes and ryvita with peanut butter to save money, it was good because i lost lots of weight. i buy tesco value plain yoghurt its only about 50p for a large pot. soya chunks, and mince, cheaper and healthier than meat.

Sold a few things. I got together a load of old clothes and shoes and pushes it all in an old pushchair to the place on Queens Rd that buys it, got £5.21 then I put the pushchair on a Facebook selling site and got £5 for it.

Well I got a mortgage with my ex and when we split up she moved out, I started struggling with money, so now i rent 2 rooms out, i get £300 a month for the big spare room and £175 for the small one all in. you can rent rooms out tax free upto £4250 i think (admittedly some of the rent i get is cash in hand) but £475 pays monthly mortgaage bill and the council tax so happy days

I sell what i can (obviously not the important things!)

And i budget shop

I also have a plan of what i have coming in and out up until March 2014 so i know what i need to have money for and when (i.e bills, etc)

I check my finances everyday - someone actually called me weird for it all - but if i want to keep a roof over mine and my kids head (until i find out if my maintenance is definitely starting again - fingers crossed!) then its something i have to do!

I am living week to week at the moment, I haven't always. I've found I now take all my cash out of the bank that I can, after standing orders etc, so I can see what I have and it makes me happy when I have something left at the end of the week.

Only really been skint once in my life when I was 18. It was the first month of being a student nurse, also lonely. That month I lived on a cornflakes, five pints powdered milk and coffee.

There's no shame in being hard up money doesn't make you better person. We've been poor and we've been well off and currently we're having too economise quite a lot it's no fun but you aren't alone in hanging round until the bread rolls are reduced to ten pence. Aldi is the best place to shop for good quality food at a good price.

When I was 20 I was having to live on £9 a week income support as I had got sacked from a job and got sanctioned for 6 weeks. My rent was £ 26 a week, plus rates etc. Needless to say I was broke for many months after and was close to eviction when I got a job

Since then I squirrel away every penny I can. Copper jars, 2 pound coin jar etc. I use cash, meal plan and refuse to waste any food at all. Even though I'm well off is as much as house is paid off and I work part time, the fear of going back to having to choose to buy toilet paper or food keeps me budgeting every penny and saving where I can

Ive spent times of my life being skint, not so bad off now but i still take pride in living frugally, which means i can indulge my passion for... well passion!(hotels and sex toys arent cheap!)

.Last year i decorated and stocked my living room with new telly , sofa, bookcase, table and six chairs and repainted for £142! Courtesy ebay and freecycle.

I also recently catered a 5 course banquet for 50 people for £150....im superscrimper!

The thing is there are jobs out there, just not job people are prepaired to do, for some reason unemployed people become job snobs, they want qualified wages for unqualified jobs

I hear people leads say things like, im not working for national minimum wage, who have dropped out of school as soon as they hit 16 with no qualifications, how much do they think they will earn?

ive worked some really shit jobs in the past, I worked in ASDA for 7 years stacking shelves nights and going uni days, people would take the piss out of me because I filled shelves like it was more embarrassing than being on the dole, its just the mentality of some people, jobs like shelf filling in super markets are 10 a penny, it has such a high turn over as people wont stick it, just no one wants to do it yet they moan they cant get a job

Don't like to borrow off any body so but the cheapest cereals now and a lot of stuff from aldi and other cheep stuff.

I sold a ring my father bought me when in my teens. Sadly he died over 20 years ago. Never wore it of late but it had sentimental value but needs must with a family and not a lot of income

I have to agree. Places like MacDonalds and burger king are always looking fir staff. Pay might be poor but its more than £72 per week. And if you do overtime you can earn more. Become the master of your destiny

In times it nice to go through hard times to make you realise what you have in life, at the present time its not so great but to look back and realise you came through that tough patch on ya own makes you realise how self sufficient you can be, some of the stuff I still love today in the cheapest and at the top of it is cheap orange juice mmmmmmmmm

Lot of judgemental people here. I came from a very poor background. Ive been homeless twice through no fault of my own. I've had to skip meals to feed my child and at one point had three crap jobs just to get by and even then slipped into debt.

Just remember it can happen to anyone and through no fault of their own. Poor people are not lazy, feckless scroungers. They're just poor. Give them a break.

I am not giving him abuse. Mine was just a simple question about the widescreen TV he had bought.

If this guy has got spare cash on the hip to do that before buying food then that is his choice but no point in whinging about being skint after that.

Yes, you do. Africa is a continent full of developing countries. Britain is a developed country. There is a mass of wealth here and much of it thrust under the noses of those who are poor.

Like the lyric says; "If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor. "

I would add "and not be judged" to those lyrics.

If this guy has got spare cash on the hip to do that before buying food then that is his choice but no point in whinging about being skint after that."

Maybe he saved up for weeks to buy it? Maybe he was given the money from friends/family to get himself a telly? We won't know these things without asking first before jumping in with both feet eh!

He wasn't whinging from what I could see.

And if he does have a large tv, so what? Might be his only form of entertainment.

I honestly didn't realise that people found being poor a reason to look down on others and question their right to possessions acquired before.they became hard up. Lord only knows what they would make of us.

It's called relative poverty. People are considered poor relative to those with eealth, what the GDP is, how free they are to engage in society, whether they can engage in simpke pleasures which the majority of the country consider basics like eating meat at least once a week.

Look at the Joseph Rowntree Trust website. I'm sure it'll be on there.

We stopped judging poverty in the terms you used in the early 20th century. To do so now would be lije stepping back a hundred years.

As I said we are not a poverty stricken undeveloped country. So those definitions do not and should not apply.

When we brought our first little place we struggled to make ends meet, our only option was to revert to living like students for two or three years and eating beans on toast and the like for ages.....it was damn hard but worth it in the long run.

Funnily enough we both agree it was in fact our happiest years.....

What others? I may be missing your point. What I am saying is that this is not a THIRD WORLD country so those definitions of poverty do not apply. Nor shoukd they unless we wish to go back to the bad old days of malnutrition, scurvy, rickets, etc. We can compare the GDP of different countries to show how far ahead or behind different areas of the world are. However, poverty definitions are different in different countries relative to their OWN GDP.

West Yorkshire

I've been to see someone from Citizen's Advice today as they are helping me sort a few things out. After taking all my income and expenditure details they rang a creditor on my behalf and the person on the phone also wanted the income and expenditure info.

When it got to travel - I'd said £5.60 a week as that is two return journeys to town, so roughly £24 a month. Some weeks I don't use the bus at all and some weeks I might have to buy a £5.40 day ticket two or three times.

Of all the numbers given to the creditor, they said £24 was unreasonably high for travel! I'm really baffled by it. That's not even taking into account if I ever need to take the kids on the bus either! Makes me wonder when they last looked at how much bus fare costs these days. And how much would be deemed as reasonable travel costs if I was running a car.

Many years ago when it was just me and my eldest daughter, I had to live on a very tight budget and we had to eat what was 'on the menu' for that day. I'd bought a little beef mince, a few veggies and a packet of chilli con carne mix. When I tasted it just before serving, it nearly blew my head off! I knew I couldn't serve that to a 2 year old but I couldn't afford to waste a meal or we'd be one short so I tipped the mince into a sieve and washed it then put it back in the pot and added some gravy granules. Now THAT'S skint lol

People who have always had a good job and earned good wages have very little empathy with people who haven't. They simply don't understand as they have never been in that situation.

I've had good jobs and crap jobs, working in a burger van was pretty crap... I've just started self employed and things take time to build up so am pretty skint lately. My sister is a worth a few million and cannot relate to that fact that I have been on the bones of my arse at all.

I've went round places to find glass bottles to take back to the shops to buy cheap noodles and milk to eat when I was 18. That's how bad it was. I lived off a packet of noodles and a glass of milk a day. Sometimes I splashed out and bought a bit of fruit.

My son has to go for a hospital app in two weeks time. We have to pay for it also for train tickets and food. To pay for this I sold my laptop and currently selling everything worth having so he will get whats needed. He has a couple of tests that needs to be done so the money has to be there.

I often gone with out food so my kids will have been fed.I dont buy clothes or go out so they can get basics things shoes clothes and food for them. I do my best and even though I cant affored to go places with them I make do with going to free places.

I was chatting to a cpl on here, they were going through hard times. I said send me your CV I will see what I can do. Ella or I had never met this cpl, they both now work at my place. I had a gut feeling they were genuine, for once I was right and No we've never played with them.

It's relative though isn't it, a good well paid job at 18 would be crap when you're 30 in most cases. Yeah my Sister did do bar work when at Uni but that was for pocket money in all reality. My parents helped her out where they could but didn't pay for everything. The ability to get a good job is not in my opinion open to all, unless they have the education and the certificates to get their foot in the door, which I would say the majority don't. I read recently that there are now more job vacancies now which require a degree than those that don't.

im sorry but with the greatest of respect I don't agree, education is open to all, if you don't have the qualifications to get your foot in the door go back to collage and get the qualifications you need to get into uni, to get the degree you need to get the job you want, mature students are welcomed with open arms and its never to late to learn

I have always said to my kids you can be anything you want but you have to really want it

I went to uni as a mature student, I worked night filling shelves in ASDA to make money while I was at uni, i now have the job i want, im nothing special, if i can do it anyone can

There are always doors to open you just have to want to walk thro them

none taken

some people make a good living from it, i did it to get me thro tough times

i really wanted to go to uni, i really wanted to get the job i wanted and no i couldn't live on the wages i got from ASDA, im on my own with 3 kids so i worked in sex clubs to make my money up to get me thro uni

im not putting anyone down, and im not trying to make out im better than anyone else, so bringing up i did sex work don't bother me at all, that wasn't the point i was making, the point i was making was there are always options to move up the ladder, in my case i had to take a step back down for a while but it paid me in the long run

And with the greatest respect to you also but you are proving my point that you have no empathy to people who for whatever reason do not have the ability to earn a good living

Not everyone is intelligent enough to gain a degree, unlike yourself...

But you say they are because you have...Showing a lack of empathy for those not able to command a good wage

I have earned well in access of £30k a year some years, my current occupation will once I've built it up earn me much more but it will take time and effort to reach that point. I could go to uni, as a grammar school attendee it is well within my capabilities but I don't want to because I can earn enough without doing so and what would interest me study wise would not offer great career prospects. ie nice work if you can get it. I've worked all over the world and been paid well for it for most of my adult life, I now prefer to stay at home and work locally. Everyones situations and abilities are different and just because you have achieved it does not mean everyone else can.

that's not because i don't show empathy that's because i don't believe anyone is stupid, i don't believe anyone does not have the ability to learn

how can you not be intelligent enough to get into collage? they have classes for all levels, you start at the level suitable for you and work your way up

if you want to do it you will, if you don't then don't, the options are there its upto the individual if they take them

it is true there are classes suitable for all levels at college but attending a class at foundation level will not enable you to move up to the next level until you are eventually a graduate. People have differing abilities educationally and no amount of classes can change that it doesn't mean they are stupid but it does mean they are not as able academically as others. To say that it is just a case of wanting to do it is insulting to people with learning disabilities and people who are less able educationally.

Then I have clearly misunderstood you when you say that anyone can get into college and work their way up. I honestly thought that you were saying in your posts on this thread that anyone can go to university and earn a good wage and that it was only because they didn't want to that they didn't....my mistake.

If you had quoted all of my message you would have quoted the part where it says I do have the ability to go to college or university, I choose not to because I don't need to. I can earn a good wage with the qualifications and trades I have. I've come across highly intelligent people who haven't got an ounce of common sense and have struggled career wise with that. I have also come across people with no qualifications with a bit of common sense whom have done very well for themselves. But to say that everyone has the ability to gain high level qualifications and do very well thankyou very much is at best naive, and lacking in understanding (empathy)

As I've said before just because you have done it doesn't mean that everyone can and to believe that shows that you have a lack of empathy to those that don't have that ability. This was my original point in my first post in this thread, in that the haves do not have empathy with the have nots, because they have done it everyone should.

I'm fully aware that the opportunities are there for everyone if they are willing and capable but you seem to be unable to grasp that not everyone is capable, because you are.

You consider yourself normal??? (joke) I'm sure others around you consider you to be very intelligent, We all consider ourselves normal (ish) But there is a vast difference in peoples academic capabilities, for many reasons, be it nature or nurture.
