school holiday recommendations

Well some are already experiencing them, and others about too.

so I was thinking that we could give our best low cost days out.. as it's good to have a few ideas.

For me my low-cost day out is to pack up a picnic and head up to somewhere in Sherwood forest... Kids love it... It costs me about ten quid including fuel to keep four kids happy for hours.

we take the tennis and giant badminton sets and the other games..

my other medium cost is water meadows in Mansfield. They are doing a school holiday pass for unlimited swimming for kids for 25quid. again I just take a picnic and stop off at a park on way home.

so what are your recommendations...

The best low cost one for me is chuck em out the front for a big water fight!!!

But I'm lucky in that I live in a close where there are several families with kids, who all play out together and keep each other amused.

Other than that I'm about 40 mins from the beach, that's not too pricey, take food about £15.

My 2 girls and I go pottery painting, that costs a bit more but you get to keep what you've painted.

Some cinemas do cheap showings mid week.

Bike rides and picnics........

Can't think of anything else, its difficult with a nearly 15 yr old, 12 and 7 yr old to find something they all want to do together, it often ends up one not coming!!!!!

Water fights are great. I have a stash of empty washing up liquid bottles for that.

Treasure hunt around the garden or house. Takes a while to plan and then do it.

Baking or cooking homemade pizza with older kids.

Cheap cinema deals- or a dvd day with popcorn and treats.

This is wicked!! We do it with our kids and they love it!

I presume its countrywide but our cineworld and Vue cinema does the kids morning showings for only around £1.50 per person and you can usually get away with taking your own snacks.

Another favourite is taking the kids to waterstones.... They often have sofas and coffee shop etc so kids get to look at loads of books and choose one each at the end. Also a trip to Hobbycraft or the craft section of The Range is cheap and they can nearly always find something new to try. Hobbycraft have lots if demos on too and people doing activities with the kids over the holidays.

If you are lucky enough to live near the seaside then penny arcades go down a treat and a couple of quids worth of pennies lasts a long time

And finally visiting local woodland. There are so many trees to identify, birds and animals to spot, camps to build etc. We often take our single burner camping stove and have dinner in the woods. You can make up a spag bol in advance and reheat it there (my kids think this is funny when everyone else is having a picnic!) or fry some chicken up and make your own fajitas

Talking of Ripley, dunno if they still do it, but didn't they offer free canoeing lessons, with local pickup transport? All that was required was a packed lunch.

Might be worth a look.

Sheffield

Brimham Rocks. It's a national trust countryside property (ie no house). You pay a reasonable amount for parking and then get to explore round some amazing rock formations. The kids can climb and scramble to their hearts content, take your own picnic and there's a loo and a kiosk for ice creams.

In fact check out national trust countryside properties near you. There are lots of beaches and great places and all you have to pay for is parking. They also don't tend to have more than perhaps a kiosk or small cafe and lots don't even have that so you won't get pestered to buy stuff.

The longshaw estate near sheffield is another good one. It's also near a stretch of river which is good for paddling and playing in.

Dovedale is another good river spot.

Also Hornsea, Filey and the north bay at Scarborough have very few shops/cafes etc and have rockpools as well as sand so are a good cheap day out - all you need is a net a bucket and a pack up.

Send them around family and friends and give them a challenge to see how long they can stay over and that gives you time to enjoy

Shame

There's the Cotswolds Water Park with an artificial beach - was hoping there might be something similar a little closer.

If it rains Ikea.

They get to "try out" all the furniture, fondle everything in the kids department, the littles can get a free creche hour, you get to do some retail therapy in the market place and you all finish with hotdogs and icecream.

If the weather stays good it could be a very cheap summer. We have a beach just about at the end of the road and a large garden that we have put a decent size pool up in. A freezer full of ice creams and lolly ices and we are all happy.
