What do I say!!!!

Now I'm a single mum to an 11 yr old mildly Autistic boy, he is my world!!

Run him a bath as usual, left him to it, then after he got out he informed me he had shaved his man area and some of his legs!!!

I wasn't angry but asked him why, he said it felt weird with hair!!

Obviously I told him my concerns that he could have really hurt himself!!

Any advice please xx

Talk to him. Explain why men get hairy etc. Just because he is autistic doesn't mean he can't understand these things. As his mother you know how best to speak to him.

Does he have Amy male influences in his life that can help out?

If he's high functioning you should be able to explain that it is an unwritten but widely held social rule that men don't shave their pubic hair until they are 18. If he's hypersensitive to touch, then this might be the reason and if so, beware of his school peers teasing during showers at PE if he shaves or get him a battery electric shaver as a last resort. You have to explain it's normal to have hair and acceptable.

Apparently his autism has not affected his hand / eye coordination.... Speak with his primary educators.... This may not be the problem you believe it to be....

Unless he in a special school with staff trained in ASC, I'd be very wary. Any advice will have more impact from mum.

In usual cases, I would agree with your logic.... However, in unusual cases the specialist primary educators are there to support and educate parent and child concurrently....

I wouldn't worry so much. You might show him some pictures of people on nude beaches but if he's still keen on shaving just show him how to do it properly. He'll grow out of it probably, but if he doesn't where's the harm.

mo matter what no 11 yr old should have razors.

Talk to him and explain he could of hurt himself..and explain why he is growing hair.

obviously you know your son better than anyone..and i dont know his level of Autism..but explain in a way he can understand.

remove razors as u would with any child and put in a save place

As already mentioned talk to your son and if need be use social stories.

Use pictures to help him understand what his body is going through.

Move your razors.

I know how difficult it is and you're not alone

no need to feel terrible..all kids do random things so could of happend to anyone

main thing is hes ok and you can talk to him about what happend

We all have moments like that and you weren't to know he would try anything anything like that.

My worst experience with my autistic daughter was when I was changing a blow out on a duel carriageway.

I thought I'd be ok, until she decided to wind the window down and climb through it.

it was scary, but she didn't know how dangerous it was.

Don't beat yourself up, it happens

Dint beat yourself up about it, it's whwre most people leave their razors. When I was a kid, much younger than your son I got hold ofy dads razor and shaving cream ans shaved my arms. Ended up cutting my arms quite a bit and when my dad asked me what happened I blamed the cat

It wasn't until my mum went upstairs the saw the truth so she toldy Dad to stop chasing the cat with a baseball bat lol

Anyway, moral of the story. You're a parent. No parent is perfect. Things happen and you learn from them.
