Got myself a bargain handbag in the debenhams sale yesterday and just notice the tag is still attached.

Going to have to take it back for them to remove it so my question is , do I ask for compensation or not

I got 50 quid + the cost of the item I bought from John Lewis when they did that... The alarm went off in a different shop and I had the public embarrassment of getting stopped and my bags searched etc...

Went back and spoke to the manager in John Lewis and got vouchers totalling 90 quid.

I don't see it as petty, I have bought goods and before I use it I have to take it back to them to remove something that should have been removed before I left. I don't go into town often because of work and now have to make a special trip costing me time and money.

I'm kind of guessing that should you make a fuss you may well get the sales assistant into trouble if compensation has to be paid out.....personally I'd rather not risk that so I would simply go into the shop the next time I was in town and have customer services take the tag off without fuss.

I have worked in enough shops as a manager to know how to talk to people without causing a fuss

I had this with a pair of sunglasses once which I bought the day before a holiday abroad. After much brute force Mrnotts finally got it off...don't think I'd have managed though. Very annoying isn't it

You will also be more than aware, as a shop manager, that simple mistakes are easy to make.

I would personally take it back and ask to be reimbursed in some way for my time and inconvenience... The job of the sales staff is to make sure the customers are happy and satisfied, having to make a return trip to get the security tag removed in my opinion is an inconvenience.

Having been a sales assistant and having been given into trouble for genuine human mistake I'd say take it in dont say anything re compensation as its just being money grabbing. If its offered great but don't go in expecting it

I had similar thing happened to me at sports direct on three different occasions. First two times i let it go and just asked them to remove them. Third time i kicked a big fuss in the shop, as it seemed they were just incompetent, as i only noticed it after i had got home and was going to wear it.

When i spoke to the manager about it he didn't give a toss and shrugged it off, so i refuse to shop in there now.

I have had that set a different shop alarm off! Also had when I was going to be wearing said item that evening for a tag still to be on, however I have yet to get any compensation

Similar thing happened to me at christmas, I bought sonething one shop the door alarms went off but security stopped a couple of girls next to me. Luckiky a nice store assistant in another shop took it off for me.

I have had tags left on items. I walked out of the shop with it, if alarms sounded them I wasn't await of it. The alarm did go off when I entered another shop though and I showed my receipt to the security guy. I went back to the original shop and had it removed.

Yes it was a little embarrassing and inconvenient to go back. I would never have asked for compensation though. The original store apologised to me, that was enough.

All of us make mistakes. Is it really going to cost you financial hardship to go back. I personally would find it more embarrassing to ask for compensation and appear 'money grabbing' than the inconvenience of going back.

You're not entitled to compensation. You bought a bag with a tag on it. They would only compensate you if the bag was faulty and even then only to the tune of another bag, nothing extra. Caveat emptor.

I was convinced that they were expecting secret shoppers or something the day it happened to me... I didnt ask them for compensation etc just spoke to the manager he offered it straight away.

If I had bought something from a shop and the tag was still on.... means you cant use the bag.... even though it belongs to you in fear of it setting off other shop alarms, if I had to make a journey then pay to park.... no I personally wouldnt ask for compensation but I think you are well within your rights to ask for it. I would also ignore other comments about you being petty and a tight sod!!! ( well thats how I read it anyway)

If you feel you have a justification for going back, I would ring the shop first to explain the situation first. If you walk in with a tagged bag, receipt or not, they might suspect you of going back with the receipt and taking a second bag.

Ask to speak to the manager and explain what has happened and ask if they would be prepared to compensate you with a store credit note for the inconvenience.

If they wont and you can remove the tag safely, then that will save you a trip.

I don't drive. It takes me nearly an hour to get to the nearest shopping centre to buy items I can't get in my little high street shops. So I don't go often. If I went and bought something and the security tag was left on the likelihood is I'd be buying it to use straight away ie an outfit for going out that night or maybe a gift for someone's birthday.

So even though I wouldn't want extra I'd expect them to at least reimburse my travel expenses for having to go back and get it sorted. After all that's at least 2 hours out of my day just for the journey with a 2 year old who doesn't like shopping which is why I don't go often

I've lost count on how many times this has happened to me. It's usually the fault of those damn self-service tills that are so popular yet blood curdling frustrating.

Do they have tag removal equipment on these tills ?

No not that I'm aware of. I don't like but still use them tills , think I'm just a glutton for punishment as I always end up being longer than if I had gone to a maned till.

Yrs. There is an assistants station with the facility to remove them. As a rule of thumb any non food item over £10 will have a tag on it so if you think it needs one removing best to check before you get home

Companies like Debenhams have constant staff appraisal exercises, they look for any excuse to tot up a few mistakes and use that as a stick to beat them with at a later date.

John Lewis are most famous for it, they describe their staff as 'partners' but tot up their mistakes when it comes to the annual staff bonus period and get rid of 'partners' just before the bonus is paid out using their mistakes and customer complaints as the perfect excuse to do so.

This is my point about customers 'causing a fuss' when something small goes wrong, and it is the reason why I personally would return an item that had a security tag on without expecting or looking for compensation....as in the long term there is always someone who has to answer for it, and that person may not be in a position where they can afford to lose their job.

Mass unemployment, with hundreds of people going for single job vacancies means employers can get rid of staff for the smallest of reasons.

But as a shop manager you would know that, and that fact made me a little surprised that you of all people would consider asking for compensation.
