Is there an answerphone service if the other person isn't looking your way?

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

I used to use two plastic cups with string stretched between them.

It's hilly round here so we used signal fires on the tops of the fells...in fact we still do as the signal is shite (plus it's handy for Taz to get rid of some of the bodies on the pyres)

You can call and text people on them?

It makes me laugh most people now can't live with out their mobile phones.

I have done this a few times and enjoyed it, leave the phone at home when you go out.

Ok it annoys people, but it can be therapeutic.

They're great aren't they. Always in touch with your loved ones even at the supermarket checkout

Whilst using your phone as a shopping list and loyalty card.

I've still use a really old mobile phone.....although saying that, it has got a touch screen and it's black and silver. I believe you can even change the ring-tone on it too....

But here’s the thing folks,,,, for calls and texts its amazingly simple to use.....

Its like carrying a little bit of witchcraft in my pocket…..

London & Edinburgh

At least we can all pretty much remember not having them and are aware the world still turned and people still worked and got on with their lives. I have spoken to my daughter about life without mobile phones or mp3 players and it just makes her incredulous!

Correct because talking and texting is rude.

You know you have an old phone when you need two hands to pick it up

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

We used to use the landline (or phone, as we knew them then) to ring each other. People would pick it up at the other end on their phone and we'd have a conversation. We'd arrange where to meet, when and what we'd do. If the person didn't turn up we'd accept that and try and find out what happened. At the end of the evening you'd call the person and let it ring 3 times so that they knew you'd got home safely.

Now Smart Phones are "tracking devices that allow you to make calls" (I heard that on R4 earlier).
