Misogyny and Misandry

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

There seems to be a casual increase in misogyny recently, whether that's the PM ignoring Wade winning Wimbledon or having a male acquaintance recently admit that all but two women are not worth his time (there was more).

On the other hand I have men talk to me about the fact that women just seem to hate them and dismiss them as irrelevant.

What's happening?

What examples are there that you have witnessed?

Can you see any misogynistic or misandry(istic?) traits/behaviours in yourself?

Please be proportionate in your responses and don't be rude to anyone else on here. Challenge comments but don't make it person. As a quote I saw says "for every stupid comment, there is an equal and opposite sensible comment" - so discussion and not vitriol.

I think disrespect is on the increase generally in society.

So by default misogyny and misandry will to. I don't think it's a sex-only phenomena.

Was that an ironic "babe" or a misogynistic "babe"?

Yet, I am seeing is displayed in terms of gender more and more.

"It was a joke."

Cute. I meant the joke in the other sense of that word.

Every time I see an R+B video! It's just breeding mysoginy and there's lots that will carry those attitudes forward.

Also sometimes I think that some women think feminism is all about men being irrelevant rather than equals.

I hope, being what I am, that I display neither qualities.

I do think the role of mass media in spreading views (like music videos) means that they are seen as more acceptable by a greater number of people.

I do agree there is more and more. But then man hating man, woman hating woman, religion hating religion, animal cruelty etc. are all on the increase. Society in general is desensitising, becoming stupid and impulsive.

Some impulses do need to be checked! Not all though.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

I feel that misogyny is most certainly on the increase and is, sadly, accepted by too many women. In fact, many women even participate in it which I find even more disgusting.

On the flip side, many women seem to think that putting men down, as men have traditionally put women down, shows some level of 'feminism' or 'equality' and truly do not get the point!

Yes, female collusion in misogyny is a factor.

then again, i think some people take what other people say too seriously.

i was brought up to believe that men are more important than women, they are in some ways, not in others.

some people cant take a joke, they say you are being sexist or racist.

not that i like sexist or racist jokes, some are funny though.

some might say les dawson is sexist because he jokes about his mother in law.

I was also brought up to believe men were more important than women. I was taught racism too. Doesn't mean that, as a thinking and rational adult, I have to continue to believe that. I am capable of forming my own opinions based on my own understanding, knowledge and experience.

And I find no sexist or racist jokes funny because that is a way of putting people down, in my opinion. And I can take a joke - just not an insult dressed up to sound like a joke.

Indeed. I was brought up that way too. I clashed quite early when I realised how wrong my parents were. I had a grandmother who called me the "coolie gal" because I have too much colour.

The Caroline Criado-Perez and Stella Creasy Twitter hate campaign against them is shocking how free some men feel to be misogynistic.

The Vine show and Mary Beard responses that just suggested to one man that someone would tell his mum at least got him to apologise. That's going to be my response now.

Men feeling they are being attacked by women for wanting a female on the back of a £10 note is not misandry.

How strange - I used to use the term 'Misanthropes and Mysogyny' to refer to some internet bulletin boards in general...

Misanthropes do seem to 'like' social media.

I don't think there's any increase, it's been going in since the year dot.

Various forms of media have simply highlighted the stories, raised how it personally affects individuals and made it more socially unacceptable.

Unfortunately simmering below the surface of society there are such people, but history shows its nothing new.

New legislation is attempting to tackle this.

I think the legislation is already there it just needs to be used.

Anyway, the answer seems to be to threaten to tell their mum and then they shut up,

Lol that may be true. It's irrefutable that there is inequality, but sadly some see the balancing as a threat to their equilibrium.

It wasn't that long ago that raping your wife wasn't an offence per se.

Positive role models are needed.

There are many, but more could be done to promote them in my humble opinion.
