You don't want to know!! 5 year olds doing fractions is ridiculous, 10 year olds doing algebra is ridiculous. Michael Gove hasn't a bloody clue about education.

I've long suspected that.

I wonder how national a national curriculum it can be when most schools now can opt out as they are academies or free schools?

Gove stated today that children in this country need to keep up with children in fast developing nations like China and South Korea with their education.....

He hasn't got a sodding clue!

Children in South Korea and China are being schooled in line with the fast track economic and manufacturing boom in their countries.....we on the other hand are not booming, and are unlikely to boom....

Brighton - even Hove!

It's smoke and mirrors and I don't think it will work nor do the DfES officials according to Radio 4 this morning. Gove was invited to comment but refused.

"Twas brillig, and the slimey gove did gyre and gimble in the wabe"

Michael Gove is a fool and a zealot.

There are few more dangerous combinations.

5yr olds doing fractions

Ok so im no teacher, but my 3yr old is aware of what half of a sandwich is,, or a 1/4 of a cake is.

so day to day life she knows these things,, getting her to add them up, subtract and multiply/divide might be another matter though

The man is an utter bell-end - clearly hasn't spent any time with key stage 1 or 2 children recently. I wrote, inviting him to come and spend some time with me in a real life classroom with real children... I'm still waiting for a reply.

This isn't about education - it's about segregation.

Splitting up those kids whose parents aren't too switched on re maths and CAN'T afford tutoring and those parents who CAN afford tutoring.

Gove is posturing to the old duffers on the right wing of his party in preparation for when Cameroon is knifed in the back.

I personally want him to continue with this BS as it will make his party look even more like a bunch of swivel eyed loons.

The other pearl of wisdom was that 5 year olds should be able to count in 1s,2s,5s and 10s to 100.

I'm not sure that's what it does. Lots of people will see it as a good thing without understanding any of the changes that are being planned.

Yet so much of that is determined by whether they have parents who speak to them, read to them, play counting games with them.

I saw that he wants word like 'medicine' and 'knowledge' on the word lists for 8 year olds. They are already there.

Nothing wrong with that at all.

Look it this way: It is so sad to see so many young people in this country completely out of touch with the reality and unable to keep up with the youth of other countries.

when I look at students going to university just for 2 hours per day I ask what are they studying

This country is way behind when it comes to education. It needs to start somewhere, whether it is from 5 years old or 95 years.

Yes kids are kids and need to have fun learning and growing. But if they can learn at a very young age why not?????

This may even help lot of parents to revise their algebra like my mum used to do.

Rather than slagging off Micheal Gove and his plan, we should ask ourselves how to get this country out of this mess and get the kids ready for tomorrow

I think the person in real need of education in all of this is Mr Gove - maybe he needs to sit his arse in a Year 1 classroom with kids who are incapable of reading simple consonant vowel consonant (CVC) words or who have SEN and who need support but who can't get the required amount because of funding cuts. If I were a parent I'd be putting my child in a free school, exempt from such lunatic curriculum guidelines.

Lots of us do ask that question and work on it. I slag off Gove because he is pushing forward an idea that won't be a national curriculum because Academy schools and free schools are free to et their own curriculum even though they receive public funding.

If I am right his idea is not bad but the down side of it is that it will not be " National" due to some free schools having their own curriculum. Fair enough, but none of those school will turn down any opportunity to make the kids better prepared for life.

That's the point - no school is setting out to ruin a child's life chances but constant changes, changing to academies etc. lead schools to focus on that and not on teaching and learning.

This country is not way behind in education at all. That is a myth propagated by politicians for their own ends and then spouted and repeated by the media. We have one of the best education systems in the world.

No one, however, thinks it could not be improved - but what Gove is proposing is not improvement. It is interference from someone who simply has absolutely no clue how children learn - and who is even ignoring his own education advisers.

Out of the darkness comes the word of reason.... This ^^^^^

Kids should be allowed to play.... Cutting food into fractions.... Adding and subtracting pieces... Orange segments.... A group of three, four or five garden peas, plus another, plus etc... Multiplication and division, addition ans subtraction.... They eat the results....

What the heck is so darned difficult.....???? Or are we just afraid of change....???

The education system needs an overhaul....

Dont know Gove or his politics.... But way to go for trying to reverse decades of bullshit policies driven by a school scoring points, at the cost of our kids fundamental education....

And he's cutting budgets so already overworked teachers are losing more support. One of my friends is an exceptional teacher and is leaving a state school to teach in a free school due to lack of support for a kid with SEN. She's considering leaving teaching altogether, yet OFSTED say she's outstanding.

I just think its communication.. the only 'normal' my daughter will experience is what her nursery teachers and myself show her. i dont dumb things down when speaking to her, she just picks it up and goes with the flow.

im not pushy by any means but since shes learnt all her shapes i changed the terminology from small squares to quaters or halves.. When it comes to sandwiches lol. i think its basic maths. she knows how to count to 20 and knows if i gave her several groups of things which would have the most and least or same as.

They do that - or at least the ones I know in state primaries do. I've sat with my nephews doing their homework. The addition, subtraction stuff with money was interesting. We've been looking at percentages now that they are 8. They know their times tables and grammar rules (at 7 able to identify and use adverbs). This is tinkering without really understanding what is being taught.

My nephews attend a school in a highly deprived area, with huge classes, and more than half without English as a first language. I have seen one girl go from starting at the school at 8 without any prior formal schooling and without any English to achieving a decent level 4 in her SATS at the end of primary school. How is that failing?

Gove really doesn't have a clue. The best education system in europe has been judged to be that of Finland (third best in the world)and is the exact opposite of the way Gove is pushing.

12 (TWELVE) week summer holiday

class sizes normally of 15-20 but on rare occasions 25 (UK is normally 25-30+)

Kids stay in school till 19 (16 in the UK when they must go to college/6th form or work based training)

No exams for qualifications until post 16 (13/14 in the UK) only informal grading until then

No streaming on ability until 16 when a kid is streamed onto a vocational or academic course.

No league tables or Ofsted so no competition between schools and they can concentrate on what is best for the kids.

If a kid fails to make the expected progress in a year they are held back a year and given another go at it so that no kid is allowed to fall behind his/her classmates.

Agree with the above or not, it has been agreed internationally as being a MUCH better system than ours

There was a programme on University Challenge a while back that said each year the questions had needed to become more difficult.

Why would that be if the education system was in decline?

If you believe the solution to a better future is to build railways and manufacture things then recreating a Victorian education system makes sense.

If instead you think the future is in science, technology etc. then it will need somebody considerably more visionary than Gove to design a system that can foster the creative geniuses we need.

Kids in South Korea spend the majority of their existence in school. After they finish regular school they go to private academies until late at night. They spend their breaks doing homework from school and then when they finally go home (about 9/10pm for the primary school kids and even later for the middle school kids) they have to do the academy homework. They don't have any time to have fun. And the high school entrance exam pressures them so much there is a high rate of teen suicide.

Do we really want that for our kids???

I'm a Nursery Teacher and its so hard to stick to good early years practice with all the pressure coming from further up the school to have kids doing phonics and using bloody numicon when that is NOT what they should be doing at that age. Its ridonculous. Gove is a moron and what he really needs to is spend a week teaching in an inner London school where there are higher than average numbers of kids with SEN, 85% of kids have EAL and there aren't enough staff to provide the right amount of support!
