How is it, that there can be so many adults on this site who can't spell, or punctuate. I see a lot of there, their and they're mix ups. But 'are' instead of 'our', 'an' instead of 'and'. It's ridiculous, this is all the basics and people still get it wrong.

Some people don't see the need others lack the ability to learn and more don't realise they are actually getting it wrong.

This is a joke, right?

Seriously... you've got to be kidding.

You placed a comma between "it" and "that", as well as between "spell" and "or", in your first sentence.

You began the next sentence with "But".

The final sentence, which really ought to have been two sentences, mixed the singular and plural. It would read better as "these are all the basics" instead of "this is all the basics" followed by "get them wrong" instead of "get it wrong".

Other than these minor errors of grammar and punctuation, your post was fine and I agree with your point.

Good on you. I don't think it's the case of the op looking down their noses or claiming to be perfect.

There is more to a person than their ability to spell and it's wrong to judge.

However, it's mind numbing and draining reading badly written profiles and messages over and over again and trying to work out what the individual wants or wants to know.

The op post is a frequent desire and is posted lots by different profiles. I know there is phone errors and dyslexic but some people just don't make an effort. (They are often the type too, to moan in the forums: why am I getting no meets? I need advice can someone look over my profile and help me? Is it rude that females don't reply?

As an English graduate reading this with much amusement. The English language is more fluid than most. What was correct grammar, spelling and punctuation 20 years ago no longer is. Look at Chaucer. That was correct then but indecipherable now. Text language may be frowned upon now but likely in 20 years will be linguistically normative.

Hello Evie,

certainly English has evolved since Chaucer but I disagree with the view that it should continue to evolve. We have developed and accepted a 'standard' English for some years now and if we all abide by that version why confuse the matter by inventing new words and phrases. (Obviously technology advances so new words may well be necessary to accommodate that advance but that is an exception that proves the rule.)

My favourite complaint is that this country seems to be adapting American phrases and spelling, a lot of it seemingly media led? How many on here now write 'ass' instead of the good old 'arse'?

Alec

P.S. The spell checker on my P.C. (Set to English U.K.) highlights 'arse', another word to 'add to the dictionary'

So your O.P. wasn't a witch hunt or abusive to those who do not have the grammar and/or spelling skills of others? Not everyone has been fortunate to have been either taught them properly, or learned them - often through necessity, as in my case. Some make the mistakes you highlight as they are afflicted by dyslexia or have other learning difficulties.

If you wanted to make such a comment, it may have been prudent to ensure it was so perfect as to have been free from critique, would it not..?

A saying involving a pot, a kettle and the colour black comes to mind...

And, by the way, this is an open forum. If you make a statement, be prepared to have it picked apart and argued against.

Text speak annoys me but I think that's just my age.

Spelling and grammar mistakes don't really matter so long as I can make out what's being said. There are so many things to get annoyed about in life that I think I will let spelling slide.

As a side note how many people posting on this double checked their post for spelling a grammar?

I was born 1960 in south London. At primary school I and other black children were given "special" lessons as we wrote like our parents spoke. For example my dad would say someone was "bad lucky" instead of unfortunate.

English language was very important. Grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation: all drilled in our inner city primary school, with weekly spelling tests.

One of my A levels is English language, B pass sat in the days before modular study. Therefore from my experience I can't fault my 60s education.

I do wince when I see errors such as their/there/they're and my particular bugbear "could of" instead of "could have", but if the message/post is readable then that's fine, I'll keep my wincing to myself and contribute to the post/reply to the message without being arsey (auto carrot tried to change that to "asset"). Not saying it isn't taught, but possibly not taught very well or less emphasis on it. I taught ICT in the Comprehensive school I attended 20 years earlier which was fed by the junior schools I and my peers attended and the spelling and grammar of the majority of the pupils was atrocious, with even the brightest not having comparable English language skills to those I had at that age (dyslexia etc. not withstanding)

On another note, whilst I've already mentioned I don't bother too much over spelling and grammar on here, when I was in a position of selecting folk for interview, one of my filters was badly written CVs/covering letters

Spelling and grammar are still taught in schools. Where the myth came from that it isn't I have no idea.

Our kids have been told as long as the teacher can understand it, it doesn't really matter! They've also been told computers are more important than reading an writing! Now call me thick if you want, But how the hell can you use a computer if you can't read or write?? (by the way i was actually there when the teacher said it)

If my kids were being taught that way Ide seriously be thinking of a school transfer, I'm pretty gob smacked

Poor grammar, spelling, punctuation and txtspk (sic), do put us off. That's not to say we judge people entirely on their written communication. We're all human, we make mistakes, and this is an informal site. It's more that the way people write tells us a lot about whether we would want to spend any time with them, let alone exchange bodily fluids.

Whats the education in this country coming to? As a kid, I was taught to take care and pride in grammar and punctuation etc. Im a quality checker in my current line of work and it annoys me to see the level of crap english used by both adults and teenagers....even menial tasks like copying words seems to be a difficult task for them

I agree with the OP. I see people with English as a second language who have better spelling and grammar than some native speakers.

If someone can learn the rules for two languages then why is it so hard for someone to do it for just one language?

"Not everybody can spell so good, to be honest it really doesn't bother me, if I can read / understand it alls good.

Thats what the teachers tell our kids!

Totally wrong in our opinion!!!

I'm talking about in this site!! I certainly wouldn't say it to my children.

Didn't say you would say it to your children! Merely pointing out what the teachers tell our kids in school today!"

Do they ?

"As an English graduate reading this with much amusement. ......... "

I realise I'm making an assumption here, but I take it you mean you're a graduate in English, rather than an English person with a degree

No time to read this interesting and relevant (maybe?) thread atm.

Is good spelling, grammar and punctuation a turn on?

Is that maybe but not from me I hear (or is that here?) you say? xx

"How is it, that there can be so many adults on this site who can't spell, or punctuate. I see a lot of there, their and they're mix ups. But 'are' instead of 'our', 'an' instead of 'and'. It's ridiculous, this is all the basics and people still get it wrong."
ive seen a few web sites that cannot spell either

and they have not even change it

The point I was trying to make, legs! I think she deserves some pants down punishment at least, for such a glaring error. And so do you.
