Brighton - even Hove!

Buy it from a dealer with a guarantee. It's a fab idea. Wish I had a vw camper. I think I'd paint 'fab' on the side in psychedelic orange and purple, sort of Scooby Doo mystery machine style.

would love a vw but cant afford one so im going for a small van type one,its only for me and the dog so don't need anything bigger,could still paint it orange and purple though

On things like that its important to check inside for water leaks. They can be expensive to put right.

I've been considering something similar, but Im leaning toward a folding Caravan rather than a Campervan. The main reason is that I can then unhitch the car and travel about wherever I'm pitched up - rather than having to pack up and secure everything down when I wanted to go travelling for the day.

If your going for a newish 1 go for a transit based 1 by far in my opinion the best drive and will loose least in depreciation but the new vw are a very good bit of kit too but as with all cars van get yourself a mechanic to check it out. If your closeish feel free to mail me but best of luck

Most of the smaller compact vans are reliable. Just take a mechanic with you and make sure it's not been abused by a builder etc. Service history,and low mileage as well.

Just to add low miles isent necessarily a good thing with the more modern diesels there made to do miles an if not there can be masive problems with turbos an to really cure the problem its much more than just replacing the turbos. Clasic examples are focuses cmax a lot of pigets but most makes are having same problems. This is only my opinion but technology seems to have gone far beyond what oils can cope with on this problem any way

We had a great VW Type 25 campervan and they are great fun.

But the main question is; how much are you willing to pay ?

If your only talking a few thou, then its a very old camper with lots of miles and probably lots of rust.

OR a homebuilt van conversion.

Homebuilts can be OK, they obviously need checking over, put make sure stuff like gas and electrics have been fitted properly, for gas you might want a certificate of worthiness. Also check, if it has additional seats with seatbelts that the seat is correctly fitted / approved.

If its a homebuilt, before you part with the cash, phone some insurance brokers (specialised ones for camper vans are out there) and check you can insure it as it has been homebuilt !

If your talking say 15 thou or more, probably best to go to a dealer and get some warrenty with it. But if you buy in summer prices are highest, if you hang on till winter prices will drop a fair bit.

Forgot to say, there are several dedicated websites out there that cater for campervans / motorhomes, many give excellent advice and tips on specific models.

Many also organise rallies and meets which are fun, not as much fun as swingers meets, but not bad.

VW campers are overpriced and under engineered, unless you can afford a fairly new one. Have a look for a Mazda Friendee (aka Bongo) which also got badged as a Ford Freda (just search for Bongo though).

Cheaper than a Veedub and less prone to leaks as they were built to withstand the Japanese climate, which can be as fucked us as the UK one.

There is also an excellent owners club with good advice on where to look, what to look for and where to get good insurance deals- it also has a vans for sale section- think is something like bongofrenzy.com, just ask mr google

I have a friend with a large motor home. When her vw camper would no longer pass its mot , she loved it so much that she put it at the bottom of her garden. Every sat night its a romantic night in. Candles , Chinese is delivered and then serious fucking. . Wow

Personally I would go for a VW T4 with the 1.9 tdi engine. Good for at least 250k if serviced correctly and will do 35+ mpg. Parts are reasonably cheap and easy to get.

New transit based ones are prone to engine problems. A set of injectors at over £600 and fuel pumps prone to failing

Pug/Citroën/Fiat based are ok if well.looked after. Parts dear tho

If you feeling flush go for the VW T5

And yes I am a full trained mechanic
