The day the colonies celebrate winning a war against us.

But, what would have happened if we won?

(Hey, it never stopped 5 doing a documentary on if Hitler won WW2)

I'm a great fan of the sub-genre scifi that deals with alternate histories. I read one where the Romans won a war (which they lost in reality) and the roman empire kept going. I think the USA would have has a war later on possible their civil war would have been against the British.

I tend to celebrate it as the date we got rid of them. Ha ha, j/k, I have a few US contacts and it winds them up.

As to the original question, the cost of the Americas campaign pretty much broke the country and, as some historians claim, was the start of the decline of the whole British Empire. So had they paid their taxes the World Map could look considerably different and two world wars might have been avoided, but who really knows..?

(I must add- the USA has given us various excellent things- including NCIS and the rather delicious Paulie Perette )

Sorry to be picky, but the British Empire had hardly even got off the ground by the time we lost the "colonies", so it certainly didn't begin the decline.

It was hurtful to royal and military pride, but it was nowhere near bankrupting Britain. A large percentage of Britons backed the Americans (and, not to be forgotten, there were very many "loyal" Americans). The Americans were heavily sponsored by the French, of course - who actually did go bust, directly causing the French Revolution.

The loyal Americans called the packers in and moved to Canada..The French went bust ("Why do the not eat cake if they have no bread") and to be honest the British fighting in American were mostly Germans from Hannover and Swiss mercenaries (East Indian Company and the Swiss Regiment)... shrugs.. For most Americans the world stops at Battery Park in New York... Yup I worked there

Losing the Colonies (which never turned much of a profit at the time) was just one act in the ongoing wars with France*.

It did however force Britain to look eastwards and grab India, much to the chagrin of the French who tried to wrest control of India but lost out to the British.

*To be accurate, perhaps everyone should sing the French National Anthem tomorrow, after all it was the French who won the war!

But yes, I do enjoy cooking, baking and all that. It relaxes me.
