Online gambling sites harmless or menace to society ?

In the last few months within my circle of friends four relationships have broken up via a huge debt accrued by one partner via casino/bingo sites and I wonder if they are becoming a silent menace to society ?

I don't like gambling full stop

its ok to put the odd lottery ticket on if you know when to stop, but someone who's addicted to gambling can be as damaging to a family as someone who's a drug addict or alcoholic

I know someone who's addicted to scratch cards, I have honestly known her sat with no electric for two days because she spent the last of her money on scratch cards rather than buy leccy and it was two days till pay day

These sites are worse then an actual casino. Because no actual money changes hands and it's too easy. I'm surprised they have been allowed to continue for add long as they have. The fact you have had 4 friends split up over it must answer your question. X

Look at the amount of bookies you find in such close proximity and then the adverts and online betting to.

Still - I suppose they've got to find the bingo somehow!!

Gambling in itself is not evil however for some people it is a compulsion easily hidden but just as devastating as any other.

Targetting stay at homes though with glam bingo sites I think is wrong closely followed by a payday loan advert...

And dont get me started on roulette machines......

We agree they prey on those who are desperate in society just like pay day loans and cause huge amounts of distress. Have to admit in banning gambling and drink it does cause a lot less heartache for families.

We are in an online age so gambling was always going that way. I like the occasional visit to a casino I don't see anything wrong with it as an occasional night out.

I have never tried online gambling as soon as I go online I end up here

One friend I'm thinking of was a friendly and chatty outgoing guy.

He's now dropped out of work,skips any social scenario and plays the poker games 16 hours a day in a verbal rage if it isn't going well.

He is unrecognisable from the friend of two years ago

Yes they are and should be banned!! I know someone who is 8k in debt. And like Obi mentioned about the payday loans, he used the payday sites to feed his addiction to the extent he had nothing left from his pay

As someone who had a gambling problem in the 90s (fruit machines), I don't gamble online. This really should be banned in the UK

If I want to play bingo, I will go to a bingo hall with a friend, play bingo, talk crap and get pissed.

I (tea) gamble, but not on random events, only on sports where I have good knowledge and hopefully an 'edge' in some respects.

Scratch cards, online betting and particularly the machines in betting shops are the crack cocaine of gambling

It's not just the needy...it's those in high paid jobs it can hit anyone..,for personal reasons which I won't go into on here it is a bloody horrible addiction and a frustrating one...I hate it...

I don't see a problem with them if I'm honest. I use them maybe once every 3 months or so. Same as anything really it's down to the individual to use it responsible

That is true re covering all levels of income as all of my friends who have fallen to online gambling are/were at desirable earning levels.

I would like to see online gambling banned, but that’s never going to happen…....

and although I have genuine sympathy for the families and loved one of those habitual gamblers who’s selfish behaviour cause’s hardship and distress to others ,,,,,

....I feel no compassion towards individuals who claim they have a gambling addiction…

I think the term "I've never seen a poor bookmaker" aplies here. If you think you can win then your fooling yourself. But to ban them is abit much what ever happened to personal responsability

thank the Lord for online bookmakers actually ... I went into a high street bookmaker on Monday and said to the assistant .. can you give me on a price on Kimi Raikonnen going to Red Bull please .. she looked at me blankly and after tapping away on her computer for about 3 minutes said .. nothing available sorry .. Eh ?? I said ... even though Mark Webber has said he is leaving .. yeh she replied .. the only bet available is who will replace Mark Webber !!

On line gambling is a modern day evil - including the spread bet market . They are completely ruthless in collecting what is owed to them - a friend's addiction to them ended up in his bankruptcy

They are just too easy for young people to use. I have seen teenagers, underage, who spend all night on their phones playing poker with the "free money" they are offered when they sign up. Their activities only coming to light when the credit card bill comes in.
