Electric Toasters vs Plug-in Hybrid Electric Toasters

I make my toast with a toasting fork and a coal fire. I’m looking to upgrade to an Electric Toaster (ET) but I’m not sure about the practicalities and running costs. Some people suggest a PHET (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Toaster) is a more flexible compromise that has a larger range of bakery goods compatibility. A PHET is where you use a toasting fork with a two-bar electric fire. Other people say ETs and PHETs are scams that offer no environmental benefits and simply cannot match the capability of a coal fire. As a side-issue, should we re-start coal mining in the UK so that we don’t have to import coal in order to enjoy our breakfasts?

Help! Please!

Why don't you join us in the 24th century, and use a replicator, like everyone else?

This post suggests the OP eats before noon. That is indeed extreme kink.

Couldn't a magnifying glass fix it, so it's fully solar powered?

You have to factor in the ambient air temperature when you are calculating how many slices of toast per kilowatt you are getting and then tell as many people as possible even though they are not interested

Yes, while it’s sunny solar would make sense depending how early breakfast is. Any time making toast using the sun is time that imported coal is being saved but I would still need the coal fire for winter, cloudy days and early starts. The cost-benefit calculations for this mixed solution do start to get more complex and more space will be taken up in the kitchen. Although given that the solar solution is likely done in the garden, some kind of feature could be made of it. But thinking about those without gardens I wonder if some kind of window box sun-tracker system could do the job. But for those facing north I wonder whether they could partner up with people across the road and get them to install a big mirror. These things are always more complicated than you first imagine!

Yes, I imagine the move to ETs and PHETs does require a bit of mental arithmetic but I think we’re already doing that subconsciously when burning coal having grown up with it.

Manchester-ish

The heating elements of 2 bar 'electric' fires and electric toasters both contain METAL!

Whilst I'm no expert on global supply chains, I've done my own research and I'm pretty sure there is child labor involved in extracting the METAL from the rocks. And once the METAL has been turned into a heating element it is gone forever.

On the other hand I can't imagine any downsides to extracting coal, nobody has ever died and there's no pollution or environmental damage.

A friend of mine has made the switch to an ET and swears by it. While I don’t want to belittle your research (I have refrained from putting research in inverted commas), my friend says that a lot of people questioning the sustainability of ETs seemed to have never considered the sustainability of coal-fired morning food preparation. I have heard that burning coal releases sulphur, arsenic, thorium, uranium and mercury and carbon dioxide. Honestly, I’m not questioning your knowledge, I’m just really confused by all the issues surrounding breakfast and the environment.

How are replicators powered? I’m assuming they are electrically powered so they would ultimately be powered by all the forms of generation feeding the grid. Off the top of my head and in no particular order that will be: gas; nuclear; biomass; solar; hydro and wind.

How much space on the kitchen counter-top will one take up? And do they come with a British 3-pin plug?

Interesting in several ways. First, is it one slot per squid and can you choose how many are turned on like a typical 4-slice ET where you can do just two slices? Wild-caught food has environmental benefits because no food is being grown and processed for feed. But the converse is that over-fishing can cause population collapse. Could it take octopus instead of squid as there are loads of those in the sea around SW England because of warming water?

But for me the big problem is that I’m not into seafood for breakfast.

Tonypandy.

Or you could just eat bread without toasting it, which would mean you don't have to fret about what choice to make.

I think you might have a point - maybe I can absolve myself from the unfolding global environmental collapse by having a good lie-in and skipping breakfast.

Disposable barbecues might be going cheap, if they get banned, so their production environmental load is already sunk.

I think searching for mirrors, so that you get community solar powered toasting, is ideal, as discussed earlier. You can work it into a plugin hybrid type facility. Even better might be a bike, powered by someone, which could be rigged up to cook breakfast, on cloudier days. There's a definite treasure trove of grants for this.

I assume that the design is such that the tentacles don’t touch the elements.

Personally, I would upgrade to the new AI "Talkie Toaster".

.

It might need a few kinks ironing out, like trying to gaslight you to eat toast every waking minute of the day, or sobbing hysterically if you refuse to partake of any of its constantly proffered slightly crisped confections, but you will come to love it as a dependable if not highly deranged kitchen appliance with a psychotic-desire to serve you toast every living minute.

.

I think you can get one from Aldi for only $£19.99 (DollarPounds)
