Phones. The internet. Nobody has to leave the house anymore if they dont want to. The way we communicate with each other has changed we can end up isolating ourselves without even realising it.

Then you come onto social media platforms and you see "the best" version of everyones life that they want to show, everyones got to have the best and be the best.

And if your already feeling down/not enough these things can increase those feelings and make you feel even more alone.

Obviously there are a lot of people who still socialise lots and thats great but if your not the most extroverted person you may struggle. Years ago you had no choice you had to go out to do most things and encounter other people even if you found it uncomfortable now you can completely avoid it.

Absolutely this.

It's sad to see and a blessing and a curse.

Agree. Technology is good on one hand but I miss a lot of the interactions I had beforehand.

Just meeting in a pub and chatting to real people 😢

I was watching a guardian YouTube video where they asked men and Women about dating. And the men felt like they needed to improve themselves before being in a relationship.Out of the guys they asked many felt they were not good enough. As not good looking enough, they felt like they did not have enough stability for a relationship or enough status, or enough emotional maturity so they resigned themselves from the dating pool. Although I can understand I just found this sad.

Too tired to date. I just want to snugglefuck and snack. Regularly.

Talking not required.

Here. There.

There were lonely people before the internet, before mobile phones.

The only difference the internet and phones made was it enabled people to make their problems other people’s problems to solve for them.

Many places have removed the need to interact with a human we have self service tills order at kiosk or on app for food you can buy just about everything and it’s left on your doorstep in a package . I can say anything on internet from my couch using smart phone totally anonymously . Modern technology removes the need for interaction .

Yet we go online to try and interact with people we’ve never met 🤷🏻‍♂️

"So why is there currently a loliness epidemic."
.

Now I read that as "...a LOL-iness epidemic", meaning why is everyone (seemingly) using acronyms like LOL or BRB etc., etc.

Unpopular opinion but i do also think our resilience is also a lot lower than it was years ago. A lot of people dont neccasarily want to do the work for themselves to try and pull themself out of it they want someone else to do it for them almost like a magic wand idea.

I dont know the exact answer i just think significant life events have always happened such as bereavements, relationship breakdowns and they are shitty situations and we feel very shitty during them but the tolerance to be able to cope with these things seems to have reduced.

Unpopular opinion but a lot of people play ‘the mental health’ card because it’s fashionable!

Don’t care if I’m castigated for that…

Central

Phones are a symptom of our isolated lives, and enabler of its perpetuation. Cultures have changed, not just in the UK, so that people are more insular.

Businesses have contributed here, where people are less securely employed and work longer hours.

I think neoliberalism has been the significant driver, over many decades but not the only factor.
