WhatsApp Usernames - Have you reserved yours?

ICYMI - WhatsApp is introducing usernames people can share and chat with instead of mobile numbers.

So - more private, less chance of unwanted attention, especially in groups as you will be able to join groups "as" your username rather than your mobile number.

You will also be able to set a key - a 4-digit code that people must also have before they can message you... Meaning people can't just add random usernames and message them.

Go to Settings - Account - Username to reserve yours before it's gone.

People can't join WhatsApp only with a username, a mobile number is still required... So it's not completely anonymous behind the scenes.

Have you got yours?

I don't see the problem here.

I've never been added to groups I didn't want to join.

The only people I talk to on WhatsApp are known to me because I've actively added them to my phone contacts.

So why would I need privacy and anonymity?

Am I missing something fundamental about WhatsApp?

I manage a lot of groups with work, and there are a lot of women who refuse to join groups generally because of the unwanted attention from guys who message them outside the group. Once they've got your number, that's it, they can message, call, withhold their number etc.

With a username they get some protection from that.

I would imagine it's not always men causing the issue, but I've not heard of any cases of women creating problems yet.

So I totally get it.
