So I’m giving serious thought about getting my bike licence. Trying to avoid my usual impulsive ‘just do it’ thoughts and be practical about researching costs, time, equipment, what bike etc.

Are there any biker girls out there who could offer me some advice please?

Just do it!

Don’t overthink it. If you don’t you’ll regret it. If you do then you can always stop.

Don’t go down the twist and go route. Get a proper geared bike.

Age wise go for the biggest L cc you can get. Possibly a 125.

ALWAYS wear your protection. Losing skin hurts like a bitch.

Am lucky as (hubby) is a biker. I bought a 125 and my kit then did my CBT test. Got out on the road. You will learn more by being out in the road. I took my test fairly quickly and moved up to my 400cc bike. I have had a 650cc but didn’t get on with it.

You might be able to do a block of lessons with an instructor. You’ll have someone talking in your ear giving you advise etc.

I also did the advanced riders course around here too.

I just went for it because it was something I really wanted to do.

Perhaps go to a local motorbike shop and see if you can do any taster sessions?

i've been a biker for over 10 years and love seeing ladies on bikes. i'm on a r1200gs at min, get a comfy bik, your arse will hurt after a while so gs you can stand up and relax your bum cheeks and you can go multiple terrains. then just enjoy the ride and the surroundings and the rest is history.

Honda CB125, well made and reliable. There quite a few cheaper Chinese 125s around nowadays too, but the Honda will be be much easier to sell on when you’ve done with it

Honda CB125, well made and reliable. There quite a few cheaper Chinese 125s around nowadays too, but the Honda will be be much easier to sell on when you’ve done with it "

And Honda build quality is far superior and the engines are bullet proof

I did my twist and go and went out and bought a Yamaha125 and learnt to change gears on a hill 😂

Did my big bike licence within 6months and moved onto a kawasaki 600..

Make sure you have all the kit, first big bike i bought burst into flames on the ride home.

Nothing feels better than leaning into a corner, trusting you didnt hit it too hard and coming out the otherside.

Anything Japanese will be reliable and you'll be able to sell it easy when you decide to upgrade

Don't skimp on your protective gear

Proper bike leather and Kevlar jeans

Probably only thing to consider is the fact you’ve likely got a shorter inseam so need to factor that in to your decision when buying your own bike as some of them have a tall seat height (tour bikes are a clear example).

I have a few ‘short’ girl mates who ride and you’ll be fine with most Japanese brand bikes since the average height in East Asia is lower than Europe so the bikes tend to factor for this. You can modify German & British brand bikes with official kits to lower them but this can be a nuisance and affect the handling of the bike sometimes.

A few used bike recommendations that won’t break the bank are Suzuki SV650, Kawi ER6 or Honda CBR600F. Very simple bikes with plenty of manageable poke and peanuts to maintain, plus don’t cost the earth to fix if you have a whoopsie dropping it.

The important thing is to enjoy the journey!

If youre still unsure i wouldn't bother buying gear or a bike just yet. Id find a motorcycle school that supplies that stuff and just get learning with them, there are firms out there that provide all that is required.

After a few weeks you'll know if its for you. Youll have your instructor for advice and recommendations. Youll even have some personal experience on which gear and bikes you like after using theirs

I second what mister above says. It is all sound advice. Be sure to get yourself a good pair of leather gloves with knuckle guards, get a quality brand helmet, a jacket with at least shoulder and elbow pads and at least some kevlar jeans for the lower half. You'll also need a sturdy pair of boots ( dont have to be a bike brand). All of that is the bare minimum in my opinion to ride on the road. As for bikes, I cant improve on what mister says

Always maintain the attitude that some knob in a car and/or the pot holed roads will try to kill you.

It’s a brilliant hobby but take training and advanced training it’ll make you a better and safer rider

If you do grow a passion for speed go the track day route

Oh and do the iom TT at least once it’s awesome
