Foot Spasms

Not my usual sarcastic comment or fun thread.

Having just been woken by this again I am laying here wondering if anyone else gets this. If you do what to you do about it?

I get spasms in my feet, well specifically my toes. The toes kind of cross involuntarily or the big to lifts at almost 90% to my foot. I can curl them down to stop it but the minute I try to relax again they go back into spasm, tensing up and going into strange positions. It’s just woken me as it can be really painful, not sure how long my toes had been in spasm but the muscles in the front of my lower leg were agony from the toe being held up for however long.

I usually walk around on it for a bit which calms it down. Have got back into bed but can feel it starting to tense up again.

Are you taking any meds where this might be a side effect?

Try some magnesium supplements (or just spray on magnesium at night as preventive)

My wife used to be manager for Holland and Barrett and used to recommend it for leg/foot cramps

Its not cramp, more a spasm. The toes move uncontrollably

I get that when my feet are cold, or when I'm trying new shoes, which is extremely annoying! I would make sure I'm hydrated enough, my feet are warm (not a problem in summer for me) and I normally do go down magnesium supplement route, too.

I get it in the arches of my feet, often when asleep in bed or in my toes at any time and they all scrunch up and spasm. Walking on a cold floor helps.

Lancing

typically caused by muscle fatigue, dehydration, or a lack of essential electrolytes (like magnesium, potassium, or calcium). They can also stem from tight shoes, poor circulation, nerve irritation, or underlying neurological conditions. Here is a breakdown of common causes and effective at-home remedies:Common TriggersDehydration & Electrolyte Imbalance: Low levels of magnesium, potassium, or calcium make muscles prone to involuntary contractions.Muscle Fatigue: Overusing the feet during the day from long periods of standing, walking, or intense exercise.Footwear: Shoes that compress the toes or lack adequate arch support can cause muscles to lock up.Nerve Issues & Medication: Peripheral neuropathy, spinal nerve compression, or certain medications can trigger toe spasms At-Home Relief StrategiesStretch and Flex: Gently flex your toes upward and pull them toward your ankle. You can also try rotating your ankles in both directions.Massage: Use your hands to deeply massage the cramped muscles in the arch of your foot and toes to promote relaxation.Apply Heat or Ice: A warm foot bath or heating pad can help relax tense muscles. If the area is swollen or inflamed, an ice pack (wrapped in a towel) for 15-20 minutes may help.Hydrate & Replenish: Drink plenty of water and consider an electrolyte-rich drink or foods like bananas and nuts to restore mineral balance. Got to love AI can then ask it further questions to isolate answers and tailor them to your particular condition.it is not perfect yet and can go down the wrong path but as long as you don't take everything as Gospel can be useful.
