I can understand it on a service, your big power shot. But every bloody stroke?? That sharapova/brito match sounded like cats screwing.

Most male tennis players do it as well, just that their vocal range is considerably lower than their female counterparts. I can assure you that most of the grunting is physical exertion. I dated a tennis player in uni. She wasn't very loud at all, except on the court. And it wasn't like she needed to grunt for anyone's benefit at the time.
