Middx/Herts borders-ish or thereabouts !

August ??? How the bloody hell did that happen ?

On the plus side, normal service is resumed ! The Chief Scout is back in business. I can't make any comment on the World Cup, for the simple reason I didn't watch ANY of it. Without word of a lie, not a single kick. And if proof were needed how bent and corrupt FIFA (which stands for Fixed It For Argentina - didn't quite go to plan, did it ?) are, the bell-end Infantino has excelled himself over the last few days. What a c**t.

Anyway, I already have five pre-season games under my belt (I am NOT specifically aiming to match last season's 202 games, but never say never) but thought I'd not bother with a July thread, give everyone a chance for a breather. So far it's been Hayes 3 Watford B 1, Maidenhead 0 Wolves 1 (that was Wolves 1st XI, and they took over 1000 fans), Watford 3 Hansa Rostock 0 (bonkers away fans !), Slough 2 Oxford City 1 (the geographics of the National League meant it was Nat South v. Nat North), and on Wednesday Watford 0 Fiorentina 1. It's off to The Den this afternoon for Millwall v. Royal Antwerp.

I'm actually juggling THREE Season Tickets this year. In addition to renewing at Watford & Fulham, I also plumped for one at Millwall - last season I ended up seeing half their home league games, and HAD they gone up the fixture list would have been all over the place. As it currently stands, there are five clashes between Watford and Fulham home games. It was the same at the start of last season but ended up being three after games got moved. And after pencilling Watford/Fulham homes into my schedule, I can (currently) get to thirteen out of twenty three at Millwall. And a bonus is Millwall host Watford on my birthday, so perhaps I'll treat myself to a hospitality package. I do prefer to stay in and around London for games, so there'll be a few trips to QPR, Orient, and heading out the other way Wycombe too (home to Stevenage in the League Cup next Friday for instance !). No doubt there'll be plenty of Academy matches to add in, but fixture lists aren't to hand yet, plus a few non league games as well.

So footballing lads & lasses, I look forward to hearing of your adventures between now and the end of May. Best wishes for an enjoyable season !

There ain’t no party like a Chief Scout party!

Welcome back mate to the best football thread on these forums. Missed you x

Currently in Berlin and about to have breakfast, before heading off to Magdeburg to watch WHU. Cannot wait - proper Eastern European powerhouse from my youth, with allegedly every East German hooligan heading our way. Glad I’m too old to register on their radar (hopefully 🤞).

Already treated Pie to a day out at the seaside for a 1-1 draw at Southend, then left her at home for the 5-0 win at Stevenage.

Already bought tickets for Burnley, Watford and Bolton away. So looking forward to the Championship.

Will see my local team play at their 10th diffferent home ground tomorrow n the next couple of weeks, and trips to AFC Fylde and Hornchurch planned with The Monkey Hangers later in the season.

It’s back, Baby!!

I'm in awe, OP! Though not sure I'd ever fancy a season ticket at The Den 😯

Arsenal are playing Girona today in pre-season - I may watch (they're doing an online pass of £10 for 5 pre-srason games which seems like good value).

Does feel like we need a slightly longer break after the World Cup - some players have barely had an off season!

Millwall still attract a bad press from their reputation of the 1970's/80's. Atmosphere is still a little boisterous, but there's never any signs of trouble (though West Ham on Sept 19th might be fruity). I started going occasionally with a friend (now sadly passed away) who was registered disabled and had a "carer's ticket" going spare. He sat near the dugouts, and it's fair to say a few foreign managers had some English lessons (not from my mate I should add), learning a few choice words they hadn't heard before ! Passionate people in (let's be honest) not the most affluent area of town who care deeply about their club.

It's quite a staggered start to the season with the League Cup 1st Round next weekend. I can just about remember in the late 70's when it used to be on the same day as the Charity Shield. Football League starts on the weekend of 15th/16th. Watford host Southampton on the Sunday. That should be fun, Saints fans are going to need to be pretty thick skinned this season, they are going to get dogs abuse everywhere for the shambles that were the play-offs. Then of course the PL starts on weekend of 22nd/23rd (Fulham host Chelsea on the Monday evening, which conveniently means Millwall v. Norwich on the Saturday) which is the latest start I can remember for some time.

Love watching a mix of the divisions. While you get the world stars in the Premier League, there's too much tippy-tappy chessboard football at times, and I have to say I prefer the Championship, it's unpredictable, played at pace, a brutal Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday slog of a division, and generally speaking you get to see more British players. I actually saw 55 games in it last season, obviously all of Watford's home games plus half a dozen or so aways, a dozen games at Millwall, seven or eight at QPR, and even a couple out at Oxford United. Having said all that about it's unpredictability though, West Ham look to have got things right during the summer, they've kept the manager, key players seem prepared to knuckle down and put last season right, and 50,000 season ticket holders is unreal. If they start well, they'll piss it.

1-0 win for Millwall in very warm conditions. But no "take it easy"/slow soft play from Millwall. Just as last season they got the ball out to the wings at every available opportunity and played with pace. Will be a hard task for them to equal last season, their best finish in 36 years, but they were quite lively today. Antwerp are actually at Orient tomorrow, but I'm otherwise engaged.

Back in my Berlin hotel now after a very long day in Magdeburg. (You know you’re getting old when you are done for the night before midnight).

Decent day out, mediocre game. Worried where the goals are going to come from and would love to see Nuno take the shackles off and let us play in the front foot. If we do piss this league, as Chief Scout suggests, it will have to be a very poor one.

No more games now until Weds 12th, when Aylesbury United host Thame ….. in Beaconsfield.

Anyone have anything lined up midweek ?

A lot of non-league football got underway at the weekend (in fact the F.A. Cup starts with the extra preliminary round this coming weekend), so it's North Greenford v. Harefield in the Combined Counties tonight. Friendly tomorrow, Hanwell Town v. Brentford B, then a couple of League Cup 1st Round matches at weekend, Wycombe v. Stevenage on Friday, Watford v. Crawley on Saturday.

I think the increased space in the stadium and surrounding area will be beneficial for the police to control the movement of any bad actors.

The shopping centre has enough wannabe gangsters, wannabe influencers and shoplifters. Who knows, it might unite them. Temporary truce 😂

Middx/Herts borders-ish or thereabouts !

"Is anyone doing a thread where we talk about our team and how we are feeling about the new season? "

This one will do. Always open a new one at the start of each month to keep things fresh & tidy.

The midweek action - North Greenford 3 Harefield 2 in the Combined Counties League on Tuesday. Not as close as it looks, a stoppage time goal gave Harefield a bit of respectability, they were second best throughout. Weds, a comfortable 5-1 for Hanwell Town over Brentford U19 - it was 3-0 inside eight minutes !!!

Attention now turns to the League Cup 1st Round over the weekend. Apparently the majority of clubs themselves requested the rescheduling, rather than have a League game to open and a Cup tie midweek and then another League game, their preferred option was to bring the opening Cup tie forward. So it's Wycombe v. Stevenage on Fri evening, and Watford v. Crawley on Saturday.

Middx/Herts borders-ish or thereabouts !

A proper "smash & grab" at Adams Park....

Stevenage dominated first half hour, scored & then stopped playing. Wycombe better team for rest of first half, deservedly pulled level and could have gone in front, though Stevenage hit bar bang on half time.

Second half was one way traffic, Wycombe had all the play, but seemed scared to shoot. Stevenage failed to test the home keeper at all....and then....fifth minute of stoppage time....Stevenage corner, flick on at near post....1-2 ! Wycombe restarted, and referee blew immediately. An absolute steal if ever there was one.

And of course, the 2nd Round draw is still regionalised, and with no European football for Chelsea or Tottenham, there are a couple of pretty big pulls who aren't normally in the competition at this stage up for grabs.

Watford v. Crawley awaits tomorrow....

Aylesbury United kicked off their season last night in the FA Cup. Playing their home games at Beaconsfield until the pitch is relaid at Chesham, they were losing 1-0 at half time. The lights then went out - literally. Flackwell Heath will have the pleasure of replaying this match next Wednesday, if a new generator can be found in time. Football’s back, baby!

Ps. I once saw Grimsby at Blackpool in a pre-season. Was up there on a stag do. I think Bloomfield Rd only had two stands at the time. Looked a lot better the next time I went there with WHU.

It's a "whole season" competition. According to Wiki, 743 clubs have been accepted into the competition this season. Extra preliminary round this weekend, preliminary round in a fortnight, then the four qualifying rounds fortnightly through September & October.

90 minutes of toil.....

THIRTY-SIX shots.....

Nine minutes of stoppage time.....

"Everton still in Germany...Stuttgart later today.

Crap weren't we!?! I'm dreading this coming season if truth be told. I'm finally getting up to the HDS next week for the Lille friendly. "

Not good at all!

Hopefully we can sign a few players before the season starts.

Have a great time in Liverpool.

We definitely got the better deal there, although I did like McNeil when he joined us in 2022. It is particular as to why no money was involved... but hey ho. Just need a right back and a decent striker now. Seen we've been linked with Munoz today, and I like the look of Troy Parrott for £17m.

malaga

Liverpool fan but these days as I live in Spain I have a season ticket for Málaga, have been going for 8 or 9 years now.

Got promoted back to La Liga this year so will be the first time seeing them in the top division. Would expect them to be battling relegation but they're very good at home, so hopefully they can get enough points there.

"New rules for Championship

It's top 2 promoted with 3rd ,4th ,5th 6th ,7th and 8th (6 places in Play offs )"

The new format will start with two eliminator ties: fifth vs eighth and sixth vs seventh. These eliminators are one-legged games that will take place at the home of the side who finished higher.

The winners of the eliminator ties progress to the semi-finals, to face third and fourth in two-legged ties with the second leg at the home of the side that finishes higher up the league.

Crucially, the third-placed team will face the lowest-ranked remaining team in the semi-finals.

So if eighth beats fifth, and sixth beats seventh in the eliminators, third will face eighth and fourth will face sixth. There is no pre-set path for the semi-finals before the eliminators.

As usual, the winners of the two semi-finals will meet at Wembley for a place in the Premier League.

Middx/Herts borders-ish or thereabouts !

Similar to the system in the National League. Far too many clubs involved.

Anyone else get to a match tonight ? Spot of Southern League Prem South for me - Hanwell Town coming out on top, 2-1 v Basingstoke in front of a gate given as 437. Enjoyable game

Villa have the super cup tomorrow. Tho dont have much hope for a win really as few key players are still on "holiday" after the blinking world cup!

Roll on the premiership starting and all the buying and selling / rumours finishing!

Back in Malice

Taking my grandson to The Emirates for his first ever “proper” game (he’s done a non-league and a u21 game). Going to be very strange sitting in the home end for the first time.

That'll teach me to mock someone 🤣

But we've beat Liverpool 4-2, 2-0 against Leipzig and 1-1 v Man Utd (losing on pens)

I'll take that as a pre season warm up 👍
