Just a general question for all the IT boffins out there. Can somebody tell me how I go about setting a website up for my business?

I have this morning purchased the domain name from a company in the uk, what happens next and what do I do to actually get the website operational ??

An idiots guide Would be great as I am not the best but not naive, with computers.....

You have a few options.....

1. Employ a decent web design company to do it for you ?

2. Build it yourself

3. Use an online web design company where you can design the site yourself

There are a plethera of sites you can use to build your own site and lots of them are pretty easy to use ( drag and drop )

You can then transfer your domain name over to them and et voila !!

For less than £200 you can get a 4-5 page basic site built for you by putting the job on somewhere like people per hour. You need to have a good idea what you want before you start and choose your designer carefully. They will look after the design bits or work with you to find a template you like and can adapt- you need to do the work of writing all the copy and sorting any images you want, although they could probably do this as well if you pay for it.

Post the job with an unspecified budget but a clear idea of what you want, you can then fine tune the details before hiring the person of your choice

Is that a flash based template site- like Wix? If it is then there's a good chance it won't be viewable on iPhone, mac or iPad- so that's a good chunk of potential customers lost- also, flash is now dead in the water as Adobe have or soon will scrap it, best build it properly first time using HTML

I agree, flash is dead and should be avoided like the plague. HTML3 can do most of what it could and is more reliable and futureproof.

It all depends what you want and the site is for. If you have a basic knowledge of the workings ot don't mind a bit of learning you could even do it yourself with Wordpress.

Personally, I would try and find someone who has decent HTML & CSS knowledge but not a Web Design company or a freelancer. There are loads of people out there who can do it and you will get cheaper.

Select a decent template you like and get them to butcher it to suit you, will save them time and you money. A decent template costs $15 and will be fully compatiable with all browsers and devices.

Also don't be sucked in by SEO cowboys - if anyone tells you they can get you to the top of google you should walk away.

I would offer to do it for you but, I'm pretty busy...

I really recommend Wordpress and a theme from Themeforest.

It's so simple, even my ex wife could do it.

Yeah mine are from Wordpress with a theme. One is just on t'internet and the other is hosted on a server that belongs to a friend but you can get pretty cheap hosting if you google.
