No, but seriously...why not just block all men from messaging? 🤔

Kent/London

This is a very popular argument in the forums whenever a woman expresses her frustration with the type of messages she receives...however it's also a reasonable question to ask.

I understand that in an ideal world you would always receive pleasant messages/replies and all the guys messaging you are polite and respectful and attractive and tick all the boxes and you could just have your cake and eat it... but obviously the real world is very different to that 👀

So I am curious to know...why not just block all men, and just be proactive in finding the profiles that stand out to you? I understand that some of you ladies do exactly that, and some of you have a thick skin and just ignore the unappealing messages...but for those that don't, and become discouraged by it...I guess my question is towards you...and I genuinely would like to know, because the same amount of time you spend going through the messages you could spend going through the profiles, so I don't think lack of time is the reason. Is it fear? Fear of rejection? Is it that you don't want to be in a position where you might have to "pursue"? Is it that you believe in strict gender norms where men should always make the first move? Genuinely would like to know 🙏

In trouble, apparently…

I’m probably missing the point here, but I don’t think any bloke would want to create a profile, upload photos and then sit there while absolutely nothing happens for months on end.

Despite having what I’m told is a decent profile and decent photos, I’ve only had one unsolicited wink from one woman in the past few months, and no messages sent to me that wasn’t prompted by games in the forums.

That kind of return rate just isn’t attractive.

I refer to my earlier comment i deleted because i didnt read the full OP (silly me) were it was aimed at ladies who dont block.

I do block all men. I dont know what everyones reasons would be for not blocking but i does seem some of the moany ones like the attention but only when its from someone they want it from (which dont we all) but then maybe go find that yourself. Or leave your filters take the good with the bad but dont moan about it as its inevitable 🤷‍♀️

It's fearfulness, apathy, lack of confidence and, most importantly, fear of rejection.

OP, I would like to know how many PMs you receive on the back of this thread, because when I've created similar threads asking why women are so reticent in sending the first message only a handful replied in the thread and most others gave me an answer privately (including lurkers). They were reluctant to give their answers publicly.

I dont block all men. But I have quite tight filters set. I dont get an unmanageable amount of messages and do reach out to guys first if something on their profile interests me.

I dont get women that moan about all the messages but dont do anything about it. But cant speak for why they do that

It does feel like a question that leads down the path of why walk alone at night when you know what people can do to women walking alone at night.

You know, you can just alter the way you do things to accommodate the way men act, don't blame the men for their actions when you choose to put yourself in that position etc.

But hey 💜

No, I totally understand that we shouldn't allow certain men away with their behaviour towards women on Fab. But it's never going to stop, is it? By using the filters provided you take away the need to complain about it. Women (not all) will do anything but help themselves sometimes. It's tiring listening to it from both sides.

I don't block simply because it's not ALL men who are arseholes...why should the majority be excluded because of the minority...I also don't complain about the amount of messages as they are easily dealt with....

It's also tiring reading the same old rants from newbies about how women block men and tar them all with the same brush.

But hey. We can only do what works for us. No way to please everybody.

I don't think I've ever actually noticed a thread started by a woman complaining about the onslaught of messages. I'm sure there's the odd one. But mostly I only see it as a part of explaining why the men who complain they don't get responses aren't getting any. I'm sure there'll be some somewhere in the annals though 💜

It'sASecret

I block on and off, but when searching profiles there isn't always a lot to go on. I've found only a very small number of people reciprocate my effort with regards to conversing so I don't really want to send out messages anymore. I tend to just wink, but that often only results in a return wink or 'hi', 'thanks for the wink' type messages which bore me.

Most people don't include any of their face on their profile, or have a write up that really stands out to me. I'd only be tempted to message if I can see a face photo or the message really stands out.

I also suffer with rejection sensitivity and have body dysmorphic disorder so rejection is something I really, really beat myself up about. I'm having to hide my profile a lot these days because the lack of interest I get for a single woman, even from single men really upsets me.

I wish I could keep men blocked full stop but it just isn't something I feel I can do.

We all have our reasons and I don't think it's wrong to comment on how lazy some users can be on here with regards to not reading profiles and sending the same banal messages. Lots of men have terrible attitudes on here and the women shouldn't have to block men for that to change.

The problem with these threads is that it just starts a debate that will never be answered, yes some men will be vile, yes some women will complain about it, note how I say some, not every man or woman should be tarnished under the same brush, the filters are they to help, if people want to use them its up to them, if they dont it's up to them, both sides have valid points!

Yes, that's a very good point! I'm very nosey about who has looked at me because sometimes people will look at my profile, not message but I like their profile so I'll show interest and then suddenly I receive a message. But as I found out on here that for women it’s a feast and they have to go through a lot to get to what they like or want at that moment in time !

To be fair, you can hide the fact you look at profiles and you can see the content (at least the start) of messages in your inbox. Usually that’s enough to get an impression about whether a message is worth reading or worthy of ignoring/deleting.

If you truly believe this is a question or a thread that leads to (at best) nowhere or (at worst) to a conversation about how women are to blame for men's behaviour, why not just ignore or avoid these type of threads?

A woman's inbox on fab and society at large are night and day differences...we all have a role to play in society and making it safer for all, but when it comes to a woman's inbox, there is only one person in control of that ...the woman - and no, this isn't an excuse towards the men that behave badly, nor was the thread altogether. It's about ...there is an issue...and there's also a solution- maybe not the best solution, but still a potential solution.

Furthermore I (the OP of this thread) do not care about men complaining...I do not care if they get a reply or a meet or they no longer can message women...because this is mostly my wishful thinking of a fab where men can't message women, and women have to message the guys first (similar to bumble)...because for me personally... this dynamic works marvellous 👏.

This

Some men do themselves the disservice of filtering themselves out with their opening message, much the same way some men filter themselves with what they have to say on the forum.

But by the same token women immediately get to know whom to block and who they might want to chat with.

It is admittedly, discouraging to notice the ratio of polite, well mannered men to those that aren't.

"Thank you for asking the real questions OP, keep fighting the good fight."

But, but, but...there were six questions, which one was real?

1. No, but seriously...why not just block all men from messaging?

2. why not just block all men, and just be proactive in finding the profiles that stand out to you?

3. I don't think lack of time is the reason. Is it fear?

4. Fear of rejection?

5. Is it that you don't want to be in a position where you might have to "pursue"?

6. Is it that you believe in strict gender norms where men should always make the first move?

Here's a possible answer...

A woman on fab receives a polite message from a guy. They chat and hit it off and have a great time when they finally meet.

She reflects on this and realises that if she had blocked all men she would never have met him so she refuses to block men in the hope this happens again. This becomes a double edged sword because when she opens the door for the exceptional gentleman, she opens same door to the socially inept.

I use message filters and just block delete the unappealing but I will also go hunting if so inclined.

The ones I do object too are the downright disgusting and absolute vile messages that some guys send (thankfully those don't happen too often) though I received one this week that is being dealt with off site....

What do guys hope to achieve by being rude and horrible? "

Pot. Kettle. Black.

An old saying my friend but pretty much on the money here. You said you’re bored of the thread. If people aren’t happy, leave. Then decided to delete the comment. Then said why you deleted it and then came with one about what do people achieve by being rude.

It’s a forum, we see how people are when they engage on the forums. No question or answer is silly, stupid or anything else, they are an insight into a person.

We could block single men.

But then that slightly goes against our exhibitionist side, and we don’t get inundated with messages.

We get in fairness more respectful messages than horrible ones.

But the horrible ones stick in memory more. Just a sad fact of the human brain that negative experiences are often easier to recall.

We want to meet single guys for MFM meetings but have to block them from messaging, now we look for them as you suggest OP.

The amount of cretins who can't read on here is astonishing, now and then we open our messages to single guys but have to close it again quickly

The excuses we've had from married guys or fantasists who arrange meetings and bail out last minute too lol

This, basically.

Fab works for me the way I use it.

I have never claimed I get thousands of messages because I don’t - really. Now with this “couple” persona I get about 15-20 a day if that 🤷‍♀️

I am not an approacher- I’m an “approachée” and it has always worked fine for me and have met incredible people.

We don’t block men because we’re looking single men. I appreciate that sometimes the quality of the messages can be disappointing but at those times I can also be proactive and search out the people that I might be interested in. Luckily we really don’t get many horrible messages…..but I suppose that could be because it’s a couples account and the assumption is that the male half is running it perhaps xx 😘

Solid question.

Women rarely look at winks. Men use winks, some t girls use winks, a decent amount of couples make use of them. The overwhelming response from women is that they don't even look at them because they get so many.

Checking my homepage I currently have 1420 new winks. And I'll only click on it to get rid of the numbers 💜

I wonder if it's partly psychology. Being approached feels validating, whereas approaching someone leaves you open to rejection. Men are expected to absorb that rejection routinely; women generally aren't. Maybe that's changing, but I think it's still a factor.

I look at winks, but I'm not popular for a woman on here and get bored of my inbox. I won't be receiving anywhere near the number of winks most women do.

I also wink people because I assume nobody who could be potentially my type would be interested in me and would rather see a wink ignored than be told via message that I'm too ugly. I have parts of my face on my profile and a detailed profile write up so people have something to go on. Most who wink me have blank or very basic profiles which make winking pointless.

Personally I think the wink function is underrated, most interactions I have on here are via winks , they have obviously seen you and a wink gives you an opportunity tonsee them and then act on that !!

OP I say this with all due respect, but I’m sure after seeing your pictures, that you would be contacted by women if men were unable to contact women, you are a very good looking guy, but how do you think it would work out for those of us who have nothing but a strong personality to attract women.

I’m not a looker, but I am, if I may say so myself a lot of fun to be around.

Would you be quite as happy to not be able to send messages, if photos could only be sent on request?

Some men need to be able to shine in their first message, I’m sure you’re a very nice charming man, but think about us who don’t have good looks to fall back on.

So the solution to the men sending inappropriate messages is for women to block all men?

Interesting. Yet again, the responsibility gets dumped on women instead of expecting these men to behave like decent human beings.

Are these men really such weak characters that they're incapable of basic self-control? The problem isn't women receiving unsolicited inappropriate messages and pictures. The problem is the people sending them.

If a man can hold down a job, drive a car, manage a bank account and remember football statistics from 1987, I'm fairly sure he's capable of not snapping a picture of his cock pressing 'send' to a stranger.

I agree, I've largely stopped posting on the forums. But I don't begrudge others doing it though, if it's how they get their kicks.

So the women just go without any respect? Any protection? And just loose a feature of fab just cos fully grown men can’t act like adults? You suggest something called tacit approval. By failing to deal with poor standards you are essentially accepting them. This is the attitude that leads to worse things like misogyny, coercion, Domestic abuse and worse.

I wonder if in light of recent bbc interest a little effort in this area would be worth it.

...and yet reality (and the high number of people mentioning it) shows that they cannot

You change it by challenging it and not just thinking because lots do it that makes it ok, it’s normal…

You are saying this is an embedded culture on fab that we should just accept…?"

You challenge it by creating an environment where men have no other option but to change...where they have to change their approach on fab altogether...where they are forced to create the type of profiles women like and they are forced to be more selective in the way they communicate with women...and those who don't or can't adapt will have to leave...all these can be achieved if men simply weren't allowed to message first. The type of challenge you are talking about, where women or men create threads where they call out these men, where these men have been reported or blocked and removed from fab, has been attempted for years, and yet these type of men keep coming back. At what point do you start seeing that this type of approach is a loosing battle?

I've had men blocked from messaging on here. I still get the male half of couples messaging about 90% of the time, sometimes posing as the woman. With all the same crappy opening one liners, where it's clear they haven't read my profile. So blocking males doesn't stop stupid getting into my inbox, only simply reduces it

Ladies, or in fact anyone, don't need to block all men. They can start by blocking any man they don't trust or wish to communicate with on their local updates.

They can then continue to block all those that don't appeal from the forums or from any part of the site and of course from messages received.

It's a very simple process and an easy problem to solve - if they actually wish to.

I honestly believe that those that post moany threads are actually doing it for attention - to actually get what they're moaning about. Why else wouldn't they just use the tools available to improve their experience . . . . .? K

I'm still captivated by your Rubik's Cube video.

Fab is not be the most user friendly at times so maybe a lot of users don’t know you can block specific types of profiles from hitting your inbox.

I got a few messages from gay guys offering verifications for wank videos when I first started, so besides naturally reporting them for trying to work around safety rules, I got fed up with seeing that familiar ‘New Message’ and finding it was just a dude looking for something custom to pull his pud to. Then I found out there’s a way of basically blocking types of profiles from even trying to message me. Jackpot!

I’m not saying this is the main reason why we see the “men really need to stop messaging me” posts all too often, but no doubt adds to the pile.

I don't think many gay men are going to be messaging women in such a way, do you? This post is about women. Is it only gay men and never bi men who message other men on here? One would have assumed it was both.

What about all the "straight" male profiles who aren't really straight? It's well known about. I hear from them all the time.

This includes some that block all single men from contacting them. That doesn't sound very gay to me, especially after seeing they have had multiple verified meets with females.

It's a lot easier just to throw blame at gay men, isn't it?
