"Global Warming is a serious problem." It is but unfortunately it's a lost cause, it cannot be stalled or reversed so enjoy life while you still can because no amount of net zero is going to change it now. Tipping point is well gone, no amount of solar panels, windmills and 25p carrier bags is going to save it.

This isn't really true at all - it can definitely be stalled, and it can probably be reversed. The question is whether we think it's worth it - and this may come down to one's age, and whether they have children (and possibly whether they like them?). If we carry on like this much of earth would become hostile to human habitation, with warming only limited by how many people die from the heat and the famines - but most people over 50 won't see this, they'll just see the hardships of carbon reduction strategies.

Unfortunately, I have a sneaking suspicion you're right. The social inertia that needs to be overcome in order to significantly change things is just too great. Humanity is its own worst enemy. 😕

Whatever we reduce our footprint by an emerging economy makes up for it plus 10. It's past fixing unless Keannu Reeves comes down and wipes out all technology.

"Whatever we reduce our footprint by an emerging economy makes up for it plus 10" Right, but then it peaks and comes down again just like it did in developed countries. And we can incentivise them to do this faster, mainly because they're hoping to sell their products and services into our developed economies. Again, it's a question of will not agency - do we want to fix the problem for our children, or do we want cheaper stuff for ourselves.

"The highlands are currently on fire too 😔 Complete with an actual evacuation of a village, Nethy Bridge. It seems they're struggling to fight it." I think we need investment in our capabilities to fight wildfires way beyond the present and on a scale that would probably have to be funded by central government.

The planet is screwed at 2.4 degrees. Really it's done, get yourself a steak and throw a log on the burner.

Aye, i hope they're getting out the way, apparently it's beginning to create its own updraft with the heat and clouds it's generating, hope they catch a break and get it under control.

"It amazes me that nobody has heard of the super el ninio and is putting it all down to climate change." There's rather a lot of people that have heard of El Niño events. Fortunately, there's also rather a lot of people that understand how climate change can make them worse.

"Boring post ahead Having researched, the actual fires themselves do not add to global warming, which surprised me. The new growth of vegetation actual consumes more carbon than the fire created. So the only time this isn't the case is when there is another fire before the new vegetation is established.. Obviously this is nothing to do with the fundamental global warming issue but it does suggest that, without the human pollution factor, the planet is quite good at looking after itself. So, I'm afraid those who say the planet is naturally warming anyway, need to rethink their simplistic views. Carry on... " Not boring at all... very informative. 20 years ago we were witness to two devastating fires where we lived in Greece, both in one summer. The temperature was high 40s, the vegetation at the foot of the mountain close to where we lived, went up within minutes. The only reason it didn't reach us and everyone in the village was because 50 years before, a wide 'break road' was constructed between us and the mountain to stop it spreading to the village. Mains tap water was turned off for a week; we had to fill bottles from the pipe that ran spring water down from the mountain. And bi-planes continuously dived into the sea, day after day, to fill with water and drop across the fires. It was pretty terrifying.

A wild fire was only stopped by the train tracks behind the site. All the poor holidaymakers evacuated only to return the next day to soggy everything from the damping down hoses but at least nobody was hurt. It was indeed scary.

"I personally think that mother nature is fighting back because we are over populating the world. To many people having 3,4,5 or more kids. Selfish in my eyes, they will probably want kids too and they will have to be fed, drive cars ect. If you are on a boat at sea stranded and with limited supplies you make them last until you are hopefully rescued. The world is a boat in space but there's no hope of being rescued. Keep the population down and the world might recover, keep having kids then it's good by earth!! Rant over. " We are just a blip in the planets history. If we go extinct big deal. The next bacteria/cockroach/jellyfish based civilization might make a better job of things.

By this i mean the consumption driven , throw away society. Its common for some people in wealthy societies to wear a dress or suit once and buy another. While in poor countries they last them years. Canada: Consistently ranks near the top for per-capita material and energy footprints due to heavy industry, cold climates, and large transportation distances. Yet its nearly half the UK population. So population isn't the full story.

Sadly unless the people rise up against all these things, as governments the world over wont, then there's only one way this will end and that's the death of this world

Yes I think most wildfires are started by people in some way or another. But the problem is the excessive heat and lack of rainfall which makes them easy to spread and get out of control.

Sorry, my post could be read as minimising the weather and climate issues. Yes, it’s the combination and I do believe in anthropogenic climate change. Given the current conditions it’s astounding that people are out there having camp fires, barbecues, discarding cigarette ends and deliberately starting fires etc.
