Did you also hear about the new law that come in force in schools across england from today? It is about smart phone restrictions and how they cant use it in schools, there will be a total ban, including during break times..

So from today schools have to ensure that pupils do not have access to their mobile phones for the entire day, including lunch times,

It would be interesting to see what your view about it is, do you agree that the schools need to restrict smart phones or is the ban too strict?

Where would they keep it, would the teachers have a special basket for each class where the pupils would put it in or would they have to hand it in at school gate before entering?

I think it is a good idea that they will restrict them, because it improves academic performance, not just that it also encourages students to sociialise more too, school is about leaning, not social media

You might think it improves academic performance ie, brainwashing success, but it doesn't, its creating a space of unsafe and unmonitored withdrawl when kids are already addicted to using them at home which will in fact lower brain function even more due to even more malfunctions in hormones causing even more disturbances at home and schools.

I think if you could demonstrate to children the cost of not engaging with education (i.e. gazing into their social media instead of leaning that which is being taught), then you will have achieved an amazing win.

But then you will have to demonstrate that what is being taught is worthwhile too.

Tricky.

If you're going to clamp down on behaviour, do it fully or not at all.

Respect. Attention. Discipline. No mini skirts.

Schools are full of opportunities and learning. Yes there are some schools that struggle with behavioural matters that need to be addressed. Removing phones will remove a distraction and barrier to this. They are not prisons.

They're a huge problem in the classroom.

The kids typically struggle knowing they have them but cant use them. I wish parents wouldn't let them bring them into school but alas that's upto them.

The teachers and staff have a huge amount to do and it just adds another layer. It's not easy taking a mobile phone away if they come in with them.

So many parents messaging kids during school hours too asking if they're ok, phoning them etc.

It makes it all much harder.

Having recently worked in many schools and prisons there are differences 😂 lots of schools that I work in have already taken phones out of the classroom, they are confiscated every morning at registration. Lots of students welcome this, it helps in school and reduces bullying. As for prisons, the only way to get a phone in is via ‘airmail’ – I was let in one with an iPad but that took some time to arrange, and had to prove there was no Internet access!

Just as an aside, there are many extremely hot women prison officers out there these days – no wonder so many are getting in trouble!

My daughter's school has been doing it already. They have the phone up until form then they hand them in to their tutor who locks them away in a safe.

At the end of the day they go and collect them.

If a child is found with a phone on their personal unauthorised, it's an automatic detention and the phone is confiscated until the end of the day.

It seems to work well so don't have an issue with it.

My eldest has to turn her phone off when school starts and isn't allowed to turn it back on until the school day ends. I don't see an issue with that, I know where she is, I can contact her (and vice versa) while she's travelling to and from home, and she really has better things to be doing while in school (she may disagree).

My eldest school had phone ban over 10yrs ago and still does.

My almost 16yr old is banned from social media by me and parental control app restricts access to phone in school hours except for an emergency call.

I support the ban

lazy parenting is the problem and it all starts at home.

how many kids do you see in a pushchair with a phone in the hand. parents do this to keep the kids quiet instead of talking and building a loving relationship.

the child has a relationship with the phone as it can teach them, play videos and games with them that once parents did often.

24/7 kids tv, disney vhs/dvds ponk the kids in frontof that with junk food while mum and dad go on facebook etc and get angry at the littlest noise of disturbance coming from the children.

and we wonder why kids and young adults go out and do not know what to do with themselves and get into gangs and alsorts of trouble.

people worship chips and plastic over a lovely family relationship.

I fully support the ban in schools and the ban on under 16s and social media that comes into place next spring.

When I was at school bullying happened but where safe at home.

With mobile devices there is no escape and young people are accessing content and having context shown to them via algorithms and friends that forward or tag them in.

I was not aware of content our young people are consuming at that age and is not conducive to education or good mental health.

If either of these bans save 1 you g person it has done it's job.

It's all about strict conformity, social conditioning and formality. When I was at school the only electronic gizmo we had were tamagotchi virtual pets and some of the teachers did not approve of them in our pencil cases. Also gone are the days when most adults wore suits and ties and formal attire all day at home and at work, yet children in 2026 are still forced to dress with these outdated strict formalities to 'prepare' them for adulthood when most of them will likely never wear a tie again. I thought my neighbour's kid was malnourished as he wears a shirt that is far too big for him. I was told that kids are no longer allowed to undo their top button, so they all wear oversized shirts to make the collar size more breathable. It makes them look underfed. Regulations are getting ridiculous.

As someone who works at this particular "coalface", I see the negative impact of having phones in school.

In Scotland every child...yes, EVERY...is given an iPad at school, so the distractions are still there, sitting on their desks at arms reach. Also, kids are online late into the night, affecting their ability to learn the next day due to fatigue.

However, the reasons are valid: Reduce/remove the digital divide. Secondly, it's preparedness should there be another pandemic.

I blame mostly the parents for not managing their kids' screen time...let alone buy them one in the first place.

I read a day or so ago that screen use harms kids up to 2 years old, harming development. I'm guessing it's not great beyond that. Parenting by giving a tech screen of some point, misses their need to engage with other people

I'd like kids in school to learn and communicate in person
