I am not afraid of it, in fact I embrace it. I like the different stages in life and what each stage brings, an interesting thing about it is if one is looking forward to getting older it can actually boost your physical health.

I also read an servey which said that whilst it is common to fare it, it showed that the older a person gets, the less they are afraid.

It would be interesting to see your view about it and if you are afraid of getting older or are you like me embracing it? Also if you are older did it live up to the expectations of what you thought of how it would be at an earlier age too?

Dont want 2 get old but can't stop time ..try my best 2 stay healthy. Think my fear as such was watching both parents suffer ill heath in later life .they were both smokers and drinkers so I know there lifestyle played a part x

It's never bothered me. Each milestone passes by and as I approach 50 it still doesn't bother me.

When I became single with 2 younger kids I did worry that I might be on the scrapheap, but it didn't take long to realise that simply wasn't the case and there's a whole lot of fun to be had.

I don’t fear old age, but I fear what can come with it, I’ve seen so much of what dementia can do to a person, it’s horrific, knee and hip replacement surgery, arthritis, we work through the best years of our lives and get 15 years of freedom before we shuffle off this mortal coil if we’re lucky.

And if you’re really lucky, you have made enough money to pay for your care, so you can leave a lot something for your children to fight over even though there was a will.

If I hadn’t had so much fun when I was young, it would have been a waste of time.

I think I am taking the right steps though to make sure that I spend those years in the best shape possible so I can actually enjoy them. My parents only made it to their mid 70s

Most of the time I feel fitter and healthier than my age, however just a small reminder like my arthritis in my hands or a silly pain for no reason and that reminder of my age can throw me sideways mentally. Its stupid really because I feel ten years younger most of the timecso really should be able to shrug off the lows.

The only fear is that I stop ageing suddenly (handbrake failure on an open top bus, or a grand piano falling on me from a building, or a flock of rabid seagulls descendingon me) for some reason before I've managed to complete Fab. 🤷‍♂️

‘Only made it to their mid 70s’. That’s not a bad innings historically speaking.

What people seem to take for granted is current life expectancy is far from the norm. Couple that with other things like a state pension only being in existence for a bit over a century (and initially only available from age 70, if you even made it to that age back then) and it could be a lot worse?

We are fortunate to be living when we are really, but the downside is a larger cohort of old people is more difficult for society to support. Hence long waiting lists for NHS etc

I'm not sure I'm afraid as such. As others have said, it's better than the alternative.

But I am a bit melancholic about it. Time passing does make me sad - and I am sad that I know the day will come when I can no longer do the hobbies I enjoy now.

So I guess I am a little nervous. 46 looks and feels quite a lot like 26 (more wrinkles, more grey, but physically much the same otherwise), but fairly sure 66 won't.

I guess the secret is to find new hobbies and interests to keep life as fun and full as possible, for as long as possible.

Science tells us we get happier as we get older. I, the male half, have never been as content with my life as I am now. As I have got older I have learned to appreciate what I have got rather than worry about what I haven’t. I am lucky to have someone I love and loves me back which helps. I have a job that pays the bills, kids, friends, family. That’s not to say I don’t concern myself with aging. I go to the gym 5 times a week , eat healthily, cut down on my drinking, protect my skin from the sun properly to mitigate its effects, things I didn’t do as a younger man.

A little bit. Not just in terms of health deteriorating which should come with being much older, but also the felling of the people I love getting older as well such as my parents who were having conversations of wills that's a tough thing to talk about.

I'm also a bit worried about the world passing me by. New trends that come in that I'd be too old for or not understand and it's such a big fear that I become one of those bitter old people, stuck in their ways and expecting everyone to change for them rather than them adapting to everyone else.

Interesting this question should be asked today, tomorrow is my 57th birthday.

I think myself its not the age I fear but if there's still enough time left to achieve the true happiness and goals I've yet to realise.

Aged 20 I was diagnosed with having a blood cancer called Hodgkins Lymphoma which was at stage 4, a very young Doctor was given the job of telling me I probably wouldn't see my 21st birthday. There's a lot to that story but I beat it into remission inside 3 months. Surviving that at such a young age gave me a different outlook because as young as I was in knew that tomorrow is never guaranteed. With that mindset I filled my years with life experiences instead of dreams, I did whatever now rather than planned too.

Medical dramas have always followed me and as most know I lost half of my left leg last year, it was just a challenge like everything else but loosing my son 6yrs ago was and is the hardest thing I've ever gone through.

I lost that fear of when my last day will be 36yrs ago, TBH after my son took his own life theres been times I wanted to join him. But life is a precious gift and its our responsibility not to waste a single day.

My only fear of aging is becoming irrelevant and more isolated. I was lucky enough to have known my great grandad who died aged 98 and old enough to have remembered as a boy the Jack the Ripper case. I spoke to him about how he felt about getting old and he told me despite his body feeling his great age in his mind he still felt and thought like the young man he once was.

So far I have not succumbed to any tweakments but I do take care of myself with good skincare and I also like to keep fit too.

To age and become older is a gift of life and some people are not blessed with a long life.

When I left School, many years ago, there were a spate of separate incidents and accidents that left at least 4 of my School mates dead. Just like that.

You never know what is around the corner, so crack on living whilst you can.

Tbf my two sisters looked after mine for the bulk of there care , but I told mine to put me in a home or down lol , I genuinely dont want to be burden

I don't look forward to slowly losing my physical abilities and youthful looks...

Also, if my life was in a more socially acceptable place; ie. wife, house, dog, career...

I'd see the passing of my time as less of a threat to my long term happiness.

As it is though I'm not exactly in the place I would have liked to have been at 30 years of age... And as the years go on I see that becoming a bigger issue.

But on the other hand... Meh, what're you gonna do 🤷

As many know my dad is 99, he's stubbornly independent which has resulted in him living in less than ideal conditions. I only have two bits of advice as people grow older, stay as fit as you can within your personal limits and accept help if it's available it won't limit your independence it'll make being independent easier. "

as long as you can saty fit and still do things it wont be too bad.

of course as you get older its impossible to do what you did in your 20s but you can help yourself by remaining active.

health is important. horrible if you have a condition or in pain everyday.

I reckon a lot of the fear around aging comes from the media nowadays although youth has always been valued over age. We're bombarded every day with adverts telling us that this, that or the other cream will turn back time. A friend of mine won't wear strappy tops because her arms look old 🤷‍♀️ and I know a lot of women in their 30s who have botox.

Wouldn't work. Just think of all the ppl you will put out of work.

All the pension companies.

All care home staff.

Incontinence pad manufacturers.

Lollypop ladies.

Charity shop workers.

Plus because you don't need to save for a pension what will you do with all that extra money?

Nope not at all. I'm embracing it. Going with the flow. Yes it can be challenging and accepting I can not do stuff I did when I was 20. All nights. Let's nights and get a full night's sleep with out a bathroom break. But I'm getting there and living the way life develops

I think a lot of that is true in sports as well. It feels like the peak is getting younger and younger and with people talking about "a last big contract before his legs go" for a 28 year old 😂

I often think of the way society celebrates youth but doesn't hesitate to send young people to war and glorify that too. It's crazy
