Space X... Investment or not

With the proposed public listing of space X, made me think about general share trading. The proposed price per share of space x, most average people wouldn't be able to buy. With the volatility around the world and increase in employment, is investment most appropriate way to plan for the future? What are people's experience of share trading?

The SNP 500 is always considered a safe investment, over last 20 years it's averages +10% annual return but in 23/24 it was like 25% and has a very low minimum buy in so is accessable to all.

On principle I wouldn’t invest in a company owned and controlled by a massive knobhead like Twatface Musk, who bankrolls the far-right and tries his hardest to get them elected. No thanks.

space X not a chance of investing in his company what so ever. way to bad an investment.

not enough return, what would be the dividend, what would be the perks. such as invest in a ferry company, free crossings?

resisiting the temptation to say wait for the rapid deconstruction to happen.

Space X is massively over-valued, intentionally so. From what I have been reading it's a big pump-and-dump and best avoided. Elon Musk is very underhand in trying to increase his wealth and doesn't care who pays the cost as long as it's not him.

If they're planning on mining the shit out of the moon, ethically no.

However if they don't the Chinese and Russians and India will do it anyway as no one is regulating it.

So for the sake if Lunar and global power it might be the best thing to do and invest in Space X.

I used to day trade and when it goes good it goes very well...be careful.

Diversify investments, split them into small pots so you are not all in.

Do not lend or play with money that isn't yours, I've seen very rich people bankrupt over night.

Do your own research on everything. Don't chase trends.

If you can make a small amount each day that stacks very quickly. Be aware of open and close times, the global market, read news relating to that asset or geopolitics and try and think how people will react.

Set buys and stop losses.

Have fun and don't become a zombie who can't sleep out of fear of loosing money because you are all in one thing.

Hodl.

I won't comment on individual stocks but buy when others are fearful.

FTSE All world index is better, with 20% in defensive bonds. I'm getting 12% per year, much more in the last 3 years. S&P500 is a bit riskier over short or medium term.

Let the SpaceX IPO settle first, then we will gauge the market’s true reaction—give it 15 days once it is added to the Nasdaq. Too much liquidity is sitting on the sidelines. When the insider and pre-IPO lockup expires, a wave of new shares will flood the market and pressure the price—the real test is whether indexing giants like Vanguard, BlackRock, and State Street buy enough to absorb the shock.

$70 billion+ in retail investor orders has already flooded in for SpaceX’s historic IPO — dramatically overtaking institutional demand and sitting heavily in the order book ahead of its NYSE/Nasdaq debut. This level of grassroots retail participation is unprecedented for an offering of this magnitude.

"Fuck principle when it comes to profit. Principle isn't going to pay the bills when this shite bag government has taken all your money off you."

I'm amazed at some people's utter inability to notice what is going on around them. Money doesn't grow on trees, there is only one way people get massively rich and that is by effectively taxing everyone else.

Every time you buy stuff you are being taxed - twice. One lot of tax goes to the government where it is spread ever thinner by a government struggling to deal with an increasingly aging population and an Edison of living standards caused by the second tax. For reference, 40% of the NHS budget goes on people over 65, over 50% of the welfare budget is pensions and pensioner benefits take over 11% of all public spending. The tax you complain about paying (barely) covers all the services you need and looks after our elderly population - from your whining I guess you don't think this should be the case?

The second tax is called profit because we all understand that business needs to make profit and that doing so is what has allowed us humans to invest and grow. The problem is this system only works to go a certain point. Beyond this it isn't simply profit anymore, it's wealth transfer on a massive scale and this causes massive social disruption. When companies (and those who own them) become richer than entire nation states, they become huge funnels, taxing billions and sending all that wealth flowing into the pockets of a few people. We first saw this with the British East India company and the government of the day stepped in realising the danger of a company more powerful, and with a bigger army, than the state, not to mention guilty of gross crimes.

When you invest in companies that are asset stripping the globe, you become a small part in that huge wealth funnel. Justifying it by complaining about taxes that are there to support society while being a part of what is destroying it would be laughable if it wasn't so fucking tragic.

Disagree. China will struggle to copy precision work in the same way they copy everything else. (They do in other industries) The amount of good ideas within Space X is hard to quantify and the share price reflects it.

A man who earned $28 an hour at SpaceX is about to become a millionaire today because of the IPO.

But he is just 1 of 4,400 SpaceX employees becoming millionaires today.

SpaceX begins trading on Nasdaq today under the ticker SPCX, priced at $135 per share and valued at $1.77 trillion.

The offering raised $75 billion and drew more than $250 billion in investor demand, more than three times oversubscribed.

More than 4,400 current and former SpaceX employees are projected to become millionaires today. Around 400 of them will hold stakes worth over $100 million each.

To put that in context, the Google IPO in 2004 created roughly 1,000 millionaires. Facebook's 2012 listing produced a similar number. SpaceX is doing more than four times both of them in a single day.

And the majority of these people are not founders or executives.

They are engineers, welders, machinists, and launch technicians who took equity over cash and held it for years.

Juan Hernandez moved from Mexico and learned to weld for the money.

He joined SpaceX in 2015 earning $28 an hour. When he went full time, the company gave him $10,000 worth of stock. He held it, bought more through payroll deductions, and sold a small portion in 2020 to buy property in Texas.

His remaining shares are worth $880,000 today.

Trevor Hise joined as a launch engineer straight out of college in 2011. He spent 12 years accumulating shares through salary, bonuses, and reinvestment. He is 37 years old and walking away with more than $13.5 million.

Gavin Petit started in 2012 on an $80,000 base salary with a small initial grant priced at $13.80 per share. He took every bonus in stock.

He has already paid off his home in Denver from earlier tender offer windows and now holds a stake worth several million dollars.

J. André Lavoie, an engineer who received grants years ago, is sitting on more than $28 million. He is currently in Italy renovating a hotel.

Tom Mueller was SpaceX's first employee, hired in 2002 to build the engines that made all of this possible. He left in 2020 but kept his equity.

This week he said: "Elon always said that your salary is one thing, but it's the equity that's gonna be worth something. That day is here."

This is what SpaceX's compensation model actually looked like from the beginning. The company paid below market salaries and made up the difference in equity at every level of the organisation, not just at the top.

Stock options vested over four to six years. Workers could buy additional shares at a 15% discount through a company purchase plan.

Early option grants were priced below $2 per share. Even 2025 grants carried exercise prices between $37 and $42. At $135 today, those positions are sitting at 3x returns minimum.

The physical impact is already visible in Brownsville, Texas, one of the poorest cities in the United States, where more than 3,000 SpaceX employees work at Starbase.

Median home prices in the surrounding county have gone from $131,000 in 2014 to over $281,000 today.

More than 100 SpaceX employees pooled their combined holdings, estimated between $1 billion and $5 billion to negotiate institutional level wealth management fees as individual workers.

Today, SPCX opens and 4,400 people find out what years of holding actually pays.

General rule, if its in the news you missed the opportunity, or more accurately sell the news. There are possible short term gains but it's very high risk I feel, personally I wouldn't touch it.

Everything feels very overvalued at the moment.

My only current possible buy is Bitcoin, my original plan a few months back was to DCA around 55,000, but in the current situation I'm tempted to place orders around 45,000 then forget about it for four or five years.

Not financial advice, just my personal take.

I understand the value, but I question Elon ad the guy to do it."

He's not doing it, he does very little he just fronts the companies. Nearly applied for a job with them the other month.

"IMO it's a con. No company is worth what is being asked. In the next 10 years the Chinese will do it quicker faster and cheaper just like what has happened to Tesla.

This is not the once in lifetime crap that's being promoted. I reckon the stock will be probably worth a fraction of the opening price.

Disagree. China will struggle to copy precision work in the same way they copy everything else. (They do in other industries) The amount of good ideas within Space X is hard to quantify and the share price reflects it. "

China has a manned space program of their own, why do they need to copy space x? There are hundreds of space based companies in china currently. Only one that I know of has actually made it to orbit so far, but my point was there are loads of competitors.

And who gave space x a monopoly on good ideas?

The point is competition is coming and given the structure of the way you can't get rid of musk, this is not a company as much as a fiefdom. It's a con. But feel free to buy what you like.

As I see it it's investment in one man and his ambitions all could change very fast just like the hatred of Tesla a while back

Diversify.

Don't put money in stuff you don't understand.

Be wary of anything who's only value will be a story that happens in the future.

The problem with threads like this is they make no sense because there are a broad group of people discussing everything from income generation, capital growth, capital preservation, trading and gambling. Most don't know what it is they are doing or what any of those even mean.

You are not smarter than people buying dozens of scratch cards in B&M bargains. In fact, they are smarter at least they understand what it is they are buying.

Future stories are good. That's how you raise money through corporate bonds. Often no one has the skills or ideas to do what you're suggesting or the task was so big or dangerous no one thought it was possible. Raising the money to do projects lasting years with massive risks is a skill in itself.

This is how infrastructure often works it's a good 5-10 year investment and you usually get a good coupon paid quarterly. It's not as exciting as space travel but everyone needs roads, bridges, telecoms , electric, water , transport. It might seem like everyone has them, but they don't. And even when they have them sometimes they need something different people are already investing now alternatives to the strait of Hormuz, new types of energy replacing diesel and towerless mobile phones.

Without future stories, nothing would happen.

i have investments and use trading 212 as it has simple to use interface and often the best rate of return if your looking at isa for example.

is spaceX a good investment.

for me no. of course the value will jump through the roof to begin with but it has a lot of risk behind it.

any problems with rockets i.e. delays, failures etc will impact the confidence in the compamy and the price.

SpaceX has never made a profit in its history to date so when will it?

will it ever make a profit? yes i suppose in the future it could if they ever to get to mars but that is a way off as the risks involved currently are greater than the technology we have thats needed to get man to mars.

with the current plan to use spaceX companies like bae systems and rolls royce are building satelites to go into space and use the sun to supply power to earth for the power needed to have all these data centres working as we do not have enough currently on the earth.

google is the biggest investor in spaceX but they are because they need a vehicle to help them have a dominate place in space so they can control information and along with their boston dynamics robotic program have future control over the machines we will see in our daily lives in the future as well as weapons to threaten conuntries with who do not comply with what the US wants.

sounds a bit james bond but the fact is these companies like alphabet are massive and unfortuately want to use there position and power to control governments and the people so having a strength in space it will be able to influence countries and switch off there access to things like electricity, the internet etc effectively blacking out a country or holding them to ransom with a weapon that can vaporise things from space. dont think its too far off, it wont be long before we have robots actng as police and google is one of the leaders in this.

we already have driverless cars and that was only something of science fiction a few years ago.

a.i. is very quickly changing things and this is why trump is trying to order the best a.i. companies to do what he wants so the US can use them for miltary means.

so what will spaceX become. it will be a vehicle for space dominance and give the US ability to transport weapons into space to gain a military edge something it couldnt do with a government body like nasa. what you and i will see is a company trying to get us further into space and possibly build things that allow us to live off earth but that is many many years away and i doubt we will be alive to see it.

should you invest in it.

no.

invest in the companies working with it as they will be supplying spaceX the things it will be firing into space and the ones making a profit and paying shareholders with dividends this will generate a second income.

And which companies are the ones providing space x goods and services. Some valid points made btw.

Avoided it completely, as others have said lots of other more reliable investments out there. I think it will drop 20% in next 3 months.

The fear of weapons from space has been a thing since Sputnik 1 in 1957 but it won't happen. Ground based or submarine based launch systems are so much better and covert. As for flying cars, the idea has been around for ages, the Jetsons had them way back when. The future is space one way or another.

Worthing

Read up on the Sirus Minerals story before committing to shares. It makes grim reading. People lost pensions and savings when they went under. Never put "eggs in one basket" so to speak. Never buy if there is only "potential". Good luck though.
