Interesting - I have promised myself to not do some things my parents did - for example some of the disciplinarian stuff - but then I really like (and appreciate now) that they encouraged us all to study and get an education. They did a few things not so well but loads and loads of things right

That was one of my narratives, too and I have followed that throughout my life - sometimes to teh extreme that I am struggling to allow a man to pay for a meal let alone anything else. But I still think it is a good mantra!

My father is a thoroughly unpleasant man and my mother not much better. They spent 35 years criticizing my every decision in life. I'm sure they viewed it as advice but non of it was good. The best conversation I ever had with them was 6 years ago when I decided that I really couldn't be done with their crap anymore.

Don't borrow money.

Don't get anyone pregnant.

Don't do anything that'll bring the police to the house.

Apart from a car loan and a mortgage, both paid off, I've done OK.

Love the joke one:-

Well I was brought up by my dad, and the only advice he really ever gave me was to do whatever makes me happy. He always says, if you're happy I'm happy.

Not done too badly so far

My parents celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary next week and not advice as such but they taught me never to settle for less. I haven't. Nor will I ever.
