Do you need 20 people to tell you the same thing before you even think about making your own judgments

I think sometimes asking for advice gets confused with just needing a sounding board. You sort of know what to do but need to clarify what is best.

I agree with that,you just want to get something off your chest and forget about it,the poor person you've offloaded to thinks shit how do I best give advice here

Depending on the situation, I prefer asking for suggestions rather than asking for advice as often advice comes with an expectation of acceptance....

It depends I suppose who you off load to, if they know you, they will know that most of it is rhetorical but will also be able to tell you you are not being wise. Off loading to strangers will give you different slants that maybe you had not considered but as you say maybe tough on said stranger
