Hi all,

Just wanted nted to ask if anyone had any fragrances recommendations for a guy. Looking for a head turner and would get alot of compliments from women. Needs to have longevity and projection also.

By the way - Dior Sauvage and Bleu de chanel are not options.

Thanks!

Victor Rolf spice bomb Extreme seems to be a fan

Depending on budget

Molton brown Cypress sea fennel

Dior Eau Sauvage (not the regular sausage, completely different scent)

Or cheap and cheerful Diesel Only the brave tattoo edition

Hai Karate… or Denim.. sadly the only stockists now seem to be Amusement Arcade crane machines.. so theoretically it could cost £200 a bottle…

Other than that its very dependant on the individual as fragrance interacts with you.. so someone might suggest something that smells great on them but has a whiff of cat piss on you..

Shop around for ones you like the smell of…

Hello OP, unfortunately recommending a scent is not like recommending a Plumber. Only you can personally determine which scent you will like and what will be suitable.

If someone you know wears a particular cologne and you happen to like it, it may potentially smell different on you because of the differing characteristics of your pulse points, skin temperature variations, body heat, natural pheromones and perspiration. Therefore suggested recommendations don't always follow through, regrettably.

You might already have an idea if you prefer 'citrussy' scents or musky or leather and so forth... Go to a store, try smelling some and applying two or three in different places (but no more in one visit). What you're smelling are just the Top Notes. You can only smell two or three in one go before your 'nose' gives up. So it means frequent visits to the store.

The Base Notes (Heart Notes) are the ones that come through once you get home after having tried a few in store. That's why it's not advisable to buy something there and then because the underlying scent will come through much later and you may dislike it. Also consider Longevity... some scents / colognes / perfumes require frequent application during the day because of their strength, potency and concentrations of alcohol versus oil (essence).

If you settle for a scent with poor longevity I would suggest complementing with items from the same product line: shower gel, deodorant etc.

At the end of the day it's horses for courses - I find Halfeti nauseating and I detest anything that contains arabic resin or oud.

Boss just gets better as the night goes on. Remember it fades more for you than others. Don’t over do the aftershave. Overpowering smells can be gross. Had to get rid of his Hugo boss night for that reason

Always liked L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme and have had a few compliments when I wear it, although as I type I've become suddenly paranoid that it's maybe because I normally smell bad?

But as others have said it may not suit you so try a few in a shop.

There are plenty of scents out there, and it is very subjective.

Also remember that scents can sit differently on individuals as they react to your skin. What may smell amazing on one person may smell odd on another. What lasts all day on one person could fade quickly on another.

Take the suggestions but get out there and try some

I do love ouds and vétivers, but even there, as Mr Nero wisely points out, your skin, the balance between the notes, the provenance of the ingredients, etc, will all affect the scent. My go-to remains Lalique's Encre Noir, a very inky, dark wood vétiver scent which suits me. But I loved Creed's Private Collection Sélection Vert, made for Cary Grant and offered in beautiful 250ml bottles, too. Alas, it is no more.

One day I shall treat myself to the bespoke experience at Floris.

That's been my experience with women's scents. You can smell them before you see them. It's off putting for me. Aftershave and men's fragrances are even worse. Less is more in my opinion. The only person who should be able to smell you is the one closest to you.

Keep a backup boxed bottle for when mine runs out

There used to be pheromone sprays advertised in the back of some disreputable publications that claimed to do just that. I don't think there was any scientific evidence to support their claims though.
