"Lovely thread, OP! I've read so many great books this year. I'm finishing Foucault's Pendulum, which is so crammed with magical knowledge it leaches into the air and creates static. Then about to re-read House of Leaves with a friend reading it for the first time. So excited. Both hugely recommended." House of leaves is a beautiful book

"I’m reading Diamonds are Forever by Ian Fleming. I read them all like once a year. You know what, I’ve never actually read any Bond/Fleming, are they much different to the films?" Almost totally different, the pace is fast and full of detail. Of its time though….

Haven’t picked it up since….if you haven’t seen, there’s a new movie coming out called ‘Backrooms’ which has *very* HOL vibes - trailer will be online now. Never read any Foucault…

"I wouldn't say it's particularly sexy but rereading Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus (chicken soup for the soul) and King Sorrow because I never tire of Faustian epics. Next is Asako Yuzuki's Hooked. Loved Butter, hoping for similar. They're not sexy though, sorry OP! Might try smut one day. Unlikely." Aha, I have Butter coming to me next week from a friend, how did you like it? If you want something nicely smutty I can recommend 100 Strokes of The Brush Before Bed by Melissa P!

"I'm reading (on my Kindle) Ward D by Freida McFadden. I've read the Housemaids books recently which i enjoyed although they don't really tax my brain but keep me entertained for a while Reading is about storytelling and a window to another world. If it’s a 100 year old classic or a beach read, it’s all the same! You do you!

"I'm too cool for books. Audio for me I'm on the search for new stuff, the only issue I have by not reading, I can miss out on some good stuff because I don't like the voice or style of the audio reader. " I have only recently started some audio but on non-fiction - I agree, it’s all about the voice. There have been some podcasts I’ve dumped (including a couple about swinging, to be honest) that I’ve had to abandon because of the hosts!

Very different, and we both had a good chat afterwards with the ones we both enjoyed. She’s bringing out another collection this year, I beleive. Rosemary’s Baby is excellent. A really taut kitty story and does so much in such a short book. Can heartily recommend The Stepford Wives for the same reason; Levin is really good at short, sharp little shockers

"Want by Gillian Anderson is….. OK, but (she openly states this) it’s a repeat of Nancy Friday’s 1970’s experiment that led to the publication of My Secret Garden which is still extremely erotic and like no other. The book led to other publications by Nancy Friday which never hit the mark but helped lots of people understand that fantasies are a normal part of human psyche. " Yep, youre spot on; she’s referenced it a fair bit in interviews. I haven’t read MSG - would you recommend?

I enjoy them but I much prefer the Throne of Glass and Crescent City series by the same author.

"Currently reading .. El Generalísimo Franco : Power, Violence & the Quest for Greatness by Giles Tremlett. It's an interesting exploration of the man without sugar coating his quite vile attitudes even for the period." Aha, so one of my other interests is Spain, and Ghosts of Spain by GT is absolutely incredible. Not read this one, but I’d probably give it a go, given how much I’ve enjoyed his other work. Franco was the devil.

"I finally finished The Tower by Flora Carr that I'd had on the go for far too long! It was a wonderful imagining of the time Mary Queen of Scots spent imprisoned at Lochleven. I'm now embarking on The Satsuma Complex by Bob Mortimer - doing it backwards as I read the sequel when I was on holiday in January." I too have The Satsuma Complex on the pile, have pegged it for a garden read once rhe summer comes in. Never read any of his work but like him a lot, personally! Glad to hear you liked The Tower - sounds intriguing!

"I'm currently reading a collection of poems by Rumi." You know, I’ve been thinking for years I should read more Poems. I did some schoolwork years ago on Lorca, and he turned into a bit of an obsession for a while, but other than that it’s a bit of a hole in my knowledge. I don’t know where to start, I guess!

"Recently finished "Ocean At The End Of The Lane" Quite a short book compared to many, but I enjoyed it. I tend to flip flop between fictional books and personal development /therapeutic books." Not read this one; I enjoyed American Gods and some Sandman, but i haven’t read this one. Did it get made into a play, or am I imagining that? I also try to mix things up - personal development ones I’ve started to listen to as Audiobooks. Seems to fit, if you know what I mean. I also only read fiction in the evening - my other non-fictions come out in the daytime. We all have our ways I guess!

Extraordinary range of contemporary poetry by themes, which will rip out your heart and subsequently rebuild it differently.

And if you’ve not read Lorca, and are of a romantic/passionate bent, you’ll find lots of beauty there.

"I'm currently reading Seven Summers by Paige Toon; just finished Fairy Tale by Stephen King " Having just looked up Seven Summers I would say those are two very opposing authors right there! I am very much a King reader though - how have you found Fairy Tale? I’ve not read that one yet

"I’ve just started ‘All Fours’ by Miranda July. Would love to have some read along partners to discuss this with - anyone interested? How are you finding it? I’ve not read it, but I do read The Guardian on a weekend and at one point it seemed like there was an article on AF or an interview with MJ every time i opened the pages! It was a big hit, that one.

Glad to hear you liked The Tower - sounds intriguing! " I attended a talk with the author at last years Chalke History Festival and she was so passionate about the story and her research that I simply had to buy the book (and I managed to get the last signed copy too, so felt very smug about that!). I loved it. I'm not going to give any spoilers but it definitely had me hooked - not only over the hypocrisy of imprisoning a crowned monarch but also about attitudes to sexuality back in that period of history.
