Car ownership/ new car ,what car??

couple, us we him her.

Never has buying a new ( second hand) car been so bloody confusing, frustrating and flipping expensive.

We will have had our current car for ten years it's a 2011 model so it's due to be replaced.

We want to get rid of before the expensive repairs start.

But the dilemma is

Petrol

Diesel

Another hybrid

Electric isn't an option due to parking/ charging restraints where we live.

But with all the regulations and change coming we want a car for at least ten years.

Current top of the list.

Petrol is probably cheaper to own and run where costs are concerned

As in services are cheaper parts are cheaper petrol is cheaper etc…..

diesel is a bit more robust as in it’s slightly more expensive to service but you will get more miles between services

My personal opinion is there really isn’t much difference in costing between petrol or diesel

Nowadays there isn’t really any difference in performance either

As for a hybrid! Why ? Seriously why?

You plug it in for 10 hours to do 30 miles (if you don’t use the right foot!)

As for electric I personally do to many miles daily to even contemplate looking into electric

And considering they are now taxing or about to tax evs then I can’t see any gain to owning electric!

And the resale value of electric is diabolical!

I think the government should be held accountable for the amount of money people have lost when selling their used electric cars !

Good choice op. Ensure no wetbelt. Skoda owned by vw so has a decent rep now. Failing that, a ford focus or fiesta also good. Petrol.

A Renault Captur 1.5 diesel is a nice car plus it does 60+ to the gallon

Unfortunately they stopped making this model a couple years ago but there are still some really nice ones you can get which are 2 or 3 years old

I got AI to shortlist me 5 cars based on criteria and then I researched each one myself then went on Autotrader and waited till one that fitted what I wanted came up.

Skoda is a good choice of brand. Owned by VW and the testing platform for VW for many years.

Personally, I'd choose the Skoda Superb and the 2 litre diesel but that's because I do a lot of motorway driving fully loaded. If it was shorter journeys, not full of people or stuff, then the petrol is the way to go.

Just remember, smaller engine doesn't necessarily mean better fuel economy. Usually it means you have to thrash it more.

1.8 to 2.2 is around the sweet spot for the UK General driving.

And whilst hybrid can be good for around town work, you have to get really new to get decent mileage and be able to charge over night at home to get the best.

Plus, there's just more to go wrong. Servicing is more expensive too because of this.

It really depends on what you want it for and how you're going to use it.

Depends how much driving you do, day to day if you do more short journeys than you do long ones get petrol, and if it’s the other way around get diesel. Dont even entertain the thought of electric.

First and foremost find a good garage local to you with good reputation for honesty especially when it’s serviced and mot d then if they sell cars as well buy of them you lose far to much on new I’ve never bought a new vehicle some people are quite happy to spend a monthly sum on a car me I like to spend as little as possible to keep the one I’ve got legal and safe my van is now at 352000 miles and still runs well costs me less than what most pay in a month to run all year no brainier but I am a mechanic lol

Op what will I'd be used for if just short journeys never go diesel nice seat Ibiza petrol are great part of vw now if doing a lot of distance then maybe look diesel but avoid big engine vw not a fan of them

I looked into Skoda when I sold my car because I wanted a roomy cabin (because….tall!) and because I wanted a big boot for my dogs and room for my (taller than me!) kids in the back.

I didn’t read any negatives at all!! All the reviews were glowing.

Sadly my plans got thwarted as my mum can no longer drive so I took over her car (Citroen).

Current car is a lexus and it's been fantastic just very expensive servicing and when it does need work the prices are eye watering.

Up until this year it's been free road tax. Now have to pay £20

love to go lexus again but second hand price's are stupid.

Shortish daily commute about 25 miles.

Don't need a massive engine.

We also very much like the Hyundi Touscon.

I've got a 2L petrol Mazda CX-30. It's a mild hybrid, which when ambling along on the motorway. Switches 2 of the cylinders off.

Which is why I'm averaging around 50mpg.....downside is £200 car tax/year.

Wouldn't recommend anything from Stellantis. Peugeot's, and shitroens diesels, especially. Upto 50,000 miles they're ok. Then they start going wrong.

All the space you'll ever need and extremely well appointed. Doesn't cost a fortune to service.

Or

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Self charging and extremely good value for money.

My old Prius had a good life and had to be replaced.. so I got myself a EV and went Tesla model Y…

I dont have the charging home setup yet, but I have Tesla superchargers just down the road so not bad

So thoughts after 2 weeks…. I always thought my Prius was quiet comparable to an ICE.. but the tesla is next level quiet!

The regen breaking took a bit of getting use to but I loving it now

The newer 1.6 hybrid petrol Superb would be an excellent choice. Self generating so not plug in. Delivered a few to Bourmouth and south coast from Leeds of late and got 65mpgs in cruise at 70 most of way. Big car as well.

Skoda is good but a bit on pricey side now with a huge following. If it’s an Octavia you really want take a look at the Seat Leon estate. Most engines are great inc hybrid. Diesel is stand out with upto 75mpg if used correctly.
