The failed attempts of making a better FAB...👀

Throughout my years on fab, there have been many people that had many (and great) ideas about how they could make the website "better" ,more "appealing" , "safer" , more "female friendly "...and some actually went on to create their own platforms (similar to fab) based on those ideas... but for some reason none of them managed to live up or exceed "the fab experience". Of course fabswingers has been around for many years and has the exposure and popularity many of the new platforms will probably never be able to obtain...but I'm still curious, have any of you been on those other platforms? What was different/better/worse to fab? Why do you think they haven't been able to attract more people or get more word of mouth positive exposure ?

I think each one of us has some ideas about making fab better...and one popular reply is "if you don't like fab, make a better website "...which is fair. But do you think there can ever be another platform that is as popular as fab but also "better" (I know that's subjective) for people within the community 🍍? Or is fab (as bad as some see it) the golden standard ? P. S I also exclude private clubs from this conversation, as I believe that's a different subject altogether.

We've been on a few other sites in our time. The main factor in all of them is cost. What makes fab head and shoulders above the others is that it's free to use with pretty much full access to messages, photos, forum etc. This of course brings it's own problems but I doubt there are many with the skill and time to make a similar site and offer it to users at no cost.

Websites are generally a pain to run for mostly little return. I imagine Fab got in early and took a big part of a niche market. There's plenty of quite poor services which flourish in similar circumstances.

There were sites before Fab that everyone used. They worked. Then they decided to “improve” the designs and killed the thing that made them work. That’s when Fab started and took over. It is about the community. Fab has a community that works. Everything else is just noise.

Cost, as Mrs N says, but also the general functionality.

A few years I got disillusioned with fab and tried out every other platform I could find. Some required subscription (which I don’t mind, I have a site supporter pass on fab) but I felt it tied me into a long commitment when I wasn’t even sure if the service suited me.

This will likely be a personal thing, but I preferred to all others how fab is set up and operates, the appearance, and the forum (which is the main reason I use fab). I believe it also has the largest member base so, of course, because I don’t have niche requirements like perhaps those on FetLife, that makes it more likely I’m going to interact with like minded people.

There are numerous things I wish were different, but changing those may adversely affect the experience of others. I get that Fab needs to appeal to the broadest audience so my personal preferences probably can’t be accommodated.

Obviously I came back to fab and I do like it, despite my occasional frustration.

The main benefit of Fab when I joined compared to another site I was on was:

A) it was cheaper (free)

B) There were more men local to me (1000’s more!)

C) The forums were much more populated

The other site had just as many fake profiles, in fact they were openly fake (profile pics of famous peeps for instance).

Adding bells and whistles won’t improve the site as it just adds complexity and costs layered over what actually works well.

Rather than improving functions (which is a red herring imho) it needs to get much much tougher on the one thing which drives people off here and I’m talking abusive behaviour. No forum bans, no time outs. One and done. Clear rules on abusive conduct in messaging and forums and banned after one offence. Clean up the site. If you can’t behave with respect to others you need to fuck off.

That’s how I think the site could be improved.

I started on AFF, which I ultimately didn't need to pay for for one reason or another.

But it was international and overall a bit flaky, and found fab around the same time.

I suggest banning all the women, just leave about 10.

I was on a similar site before I joined fab, and the only thing I miss from that site was the blog feature. Every profile had its own area where you could write blogs, and people could comment, and the blogs would be ranked by views, followers etc. As someone who loves to write, I found that a great way of connecting with people. I know we have the forums here (which is awesome), but I do miss having a dedicated space for my thoughts.

Overall though, it's a minor thing and I believe fab is still the best site of its kind

Oh blogs would be wonderful on here. There'd probably be a fair AI posts but still. I'd really enjoy reading others in that way.

Blimey, I was on AFF 20 years ago. Don’t remember paying either. Worked for me

That's a fair point...but even that comes with a challenge of policing what actually classes as " abusive " ...certain words by themselves are not abusive/offensive, but can be if addressed to an individual...for example if a woman messages a man and he replies with "NO, you're too overweight/fat" ...would that be enough to kick him off? You maybe would say yes...many others might disagree. It's that subtle abusive behaviour that would be tricky to police.

Been on a number of site and the only two reasons we remain on Fab are cost and meets. It's low to free and it is the only site where we have consistently been able to get meets.
