If you were working 4 to 5 days a week in an average month and you knew that doesn't get you anywhere in what you need financially, but most of the time. The hours were there and you had what you needed that month. Would you just make a lot of cut backs on the months you were short of money or would you take a cut in pay and get more secure hours.

For example say you work 35 hours a week and you earned £1000. Some months and other times you worked 28 hours and got £800. Would you stick it out until you could get a full time job or would cut your loses and get a second job. So you will earn £900 for doing 35 hours a week and it will secure?

Depends. Job market isn't great at the moment, it's not like you can just walk into a job. Do you feel you have the capacity to take in a second job? Will it affect your social life any relationships time with kids etc.

Work life balance is as important as the bank one.

If I could get a job on the non contracted days then it won't affect my social life at all and I don't have kids. However chances are if I do that. I will earn the same amount every month, which is a good thing as I can plan my money, etc. but it can also be a bad thing as in my current job sometimes I earn a lot and with 2 jobs I will never earn that amount as with a lot of hours in the 1 job I will get more money, but some months I earn a lot less as there's no hours going.
