Maybe this will only strike a cord with men, but maybe some women built them as well.

So what was your favourite Airfix model, did you prefer aircraft, ships or vehicles ? Maybe you had loads of the small plastic soldiers which so often met a grizzly end at the business end of the hoover.

I'd mostly build aircraft, which when they got too battered would be set alight and catapulted across the garden.

I found the ships had too many fidley pieces and as for the ones with rigging, only Shel had the patients to build those.

Bought 2 a few months back to keep me occupied, yes i bought a spitfire, but also bought a harrier, did a relatively good job on both as my 9yo daughter was impressed and wanted them. So i let her have both of them.Apparently they have pride of place in her bedroom at my ex wifes house

I had loads, all 1/72 scale ww2 aircraft and mini soldiers, tanks and halftracks. If memory serves, it all started with a pontoon bridge set and i do believe i still have them all in a large cardboard box somewhere.....of course i'm far too old for them now and besides, there'd be no room for them, what with my walking dead, halo and predator figs taking up shelf space

The amount of pocket money I must have spent on AirFix kits over the years - jeeez! Could have built a house for that!! lol!

Out of many, many models of theirs that I made, the one that always sticks in the memory was the Sea King helicopter cos it was a 'right bugger' to get the rotor blades to lay at the correct angle.

The one AirFix kit I always wanted to get was the 1/12th (I think!) 'Blower' Bentley Le Mans. Could never save up enough pocket money for that, as it was one of the most expensive kits they made.

Been interesting the last few years going to Flying Legends at Duxford and seeing just how much some of the some of the cheapest kits change hands for now from the specialist sellers - specially when in the original bag and never been opened... Happy days...

Had a B52 and a lightning.

Preferred matchbox kits, they didnt need painting. Had an alfajet a Huey cobra and a spitfire mk9

My favourite was a lockheed starfighter

Best model I built was one I got in America

It was a custom corvette. The only one I painted properly. I sprayed it metallic jade green. It had working steering and real rubber tyres

Had to make this kit as I was lucky enough to be driven in one !!!!!

My brother used to 'fly' my models !!

No wonder i don't get on with him !!

First Ship was HMS Ajax,,,,,,,

First plane was a Hawker-Hurricane…

First box of litle soldiers,,, French foreign legion, who were given a grizzly send off, when I melted them down by feeding them into the Mentholated Spirit burner of my Mamod Traction engine….

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

Progressed from the Airfix kits in my teens to Revell and Italieri trucks, both American and European in my 30`s through to now doing OO Gauge railway items and card buildings for the model railway layout that may eventually be built!

Derby/Notts(Long Eaton)

Yes up to the age about 15 spent plenty of money and hours building painting and setting in dioramas. Can remember building the big hovercraft and galleon (that damned rigging)
