So astronauts are going to land on the moon again. They launch in approximately 1 hour.

Is it a big deal? Does anyone care ? Will you watch the launch ?

I’ve always been interested in rocket and shuttle launches, so I’ll try and watch it live whilst I’m at work.

I am hoping they do land on the moon in future missions. It’s strange to think it’s taken so long for them to get back there

This extra distance is tiny, so it's been done before with far less technology. So this time, no big deal.

The extra distance is small in the scheme of things and yes, it has been done before but for you its no big deal.

For me, I find it fascinating. Sitting on top of a tank of fuel and being propelled out of our beuatiful planets atmospere, to me is crazy. I guess if it bacame more day to day it would become less intriging to me 🤷‍♂️

I think we're all 🤬🤬🤬🤬😡 trump over the rising petrol prices and how it's affecting mortgages and everything else. To care about something that is a stepping stone for humanity.

The irony is the Americans have spent god knows how many billions to try to build up the soft power of America with this mission and trump has just pissed all over it, then himself and his team too.

The foolishness of man has never been so obvious.

I’m watching it because I find it interesting. And I know there are wide reaching positive implications for humanity with space exploration. However, I wonder how much this cost - probably a few hundred million at least, maybe a billion - and wonder about all the worthy things on which that money could (or should) have been spent.

Cancer, MS, MND, Parkinson's, Alzheimer’s and countless other conditions. All the very clever people working on this could have concentrated their efforts and budgets on things affecting the human race now. And avian homelessness.

There is a distinction, though. The pool of private money is vastly larger than the pool of public money.

That said, we spent nearly a trillion supporting everyone through Covid, yet people still balk at even modest tax rises, so the chances of society willingly handing over enough to solve these problems properly seem fairly slim.

And in terms of the difference $92bn can actually make, look at what Bill Gates has already given away, way more than that, and then ask whether Africa looks fundamentally transformed. That says less about generosity and more about the sheer scale and complexity of the problems.

And even if you diverted money away from food or pharma, many of the same incentives would just recreate the same concentrations of wealth elsewhere. The people most inclined to maximise advantage tend to find their way into positions where they can do exactly that. So you'd see the Elon Musk of pork pies and sausage rolls throwing his weight around.

A death in the depths of the sea would be instantaneous. IN space, you have 30 seconds (I think) of suffering. You're blood would boil inside you and your skin freeze, unless you were in the glare of the sun, in which case you'd be burnt alive.

I'd take the sea.

Yes its spectacular and a technical achievement.

But I can't see the point of this.

Its not Star Trek, space and the Moon are both very hostile environments, with extremes of temperature & high radiation no atmosphere and a vacuum, not to mention micrometeorites.

Its just very expensive, just send probes, not people and sort out the mess down here first.

It's alarming, considering the current oil shortage and the excess levels of Carbon in our atmosphere, exacerbating global heating.

I'm uncertain that it's little more than a Trump ego boost and global race to exploit precious materials on the moon

This investment could have better helped more people here on earth 🌎 instead

It's a good job the great explorers didn't think like that. I'm pretty sure we had vast shortages back in those days too.

"Apparently Britain is sending a ferry around the Isle of Wight so might watch that instead."

It broke down and they put on a bus service instead.

You could look at it like that or you could consider all the death, disease and destruction that exploration has caused. We should fix our own planet first before spreading our plague out into the universe.

The thing that pisses me off with space exploration is the amount of space rubbish that is left behind.

Bag it and bin it!

Earth is not going to collide with an asteroid, it’ll be a bit of loose space debris - mark my words!

Honestly don't care. It's not what I would have spent the money on but whatever. I do gag on the "for humanity" bullshit tho.

Unfortunately the chain ferry is out of action again so it's a no go.

"So astronauts are going to land on the moon again. They launch in approximately 1 hour.

Is it a big deal? Does anyone care ? Will you watch the launch ?

"

It's all fake, seriously I don't believe anything coming out of the USA with the mango in charge.

It's just an old washing up bottle and some sticky backed plastic.

The human race has and is destroying our planet. We have absolutely no fall back when the planet decides it has had enough. The waste is astounding. Watching a $92b stick go into orbit. It’s fundamentally pointless. Nobody benefits from it. Smug politicians and bureaucrats are the only ones who think like this. Normal human beings don’t. It’s so nice to see the yanks waste billions on this and yet their society is based on the reliance of scrounging. Most live on tips instead of a working wage. I was astounded when I visited New York at how many people struggled to live with their cupped hands raised for a wage. It’s totally wrong.

I'd imagine the planning for the launch was years in the making and the construction of the rocket's unless it WAS AI generated that's SOME forward planning from Trumpton!!
