Hot cross buns

It's very much hot cross bun season and I love 'em! 😋

I don't often have them with just butter. I have them with cream cheese, or some marmalade, which probably makes me a bit weird. I'm thinking about trying chocolate spread and banana.

What do you like on yours? Give me some ideas.

I prefer them with just butter, but hubby puts a layer of jam on them. Very odd!

He also likes the chocolate-flavoured ones, and as much as it saps at my soul at little, I'm rather partial to the cheese ones which have become a staple every year.

I get a lot of judgement about this ... but I just eat them straight from the pack. No toasting, no butter or other toppings.

Just raw, straight out of the packet - I cannot wait for the pfaff of slicing them in half, toasting them and buttering them. They are my ideal snack.

I love them toast with vegan butter melting over them.

Fun fact (probably) Hot-cross bun were the first items to be sold as 'buy one, get one free' .... One a penny, two a penny.

You'll be f**ked if they cost one a quid these days, let alone one-a-penny or even two-a-penny!

I've been to six different marks and Spencers trying to find the tiramisu ones in the past couple of days.

The boss has just called to say he's found some, so I'll finally get to try them later 💜

Hot cross buns to me are just a tea cake with some spice in.

I'm not too fussy on the ones we get these days they are a very poor representation of a traditionally baked bun.

As for Mrs. Nicecouple don't even go there with your M and S fancied up(bastardised ) buns. Disgusting interference by M and S.

A few weeks ago I bought their Red Velvet HCB's with white chocolate inners. They were disgusting.

The white chocolate was more like a spoon of runny overly sweet custard and the buns were like raw dough and turned to an unbaked solid goo when I chomped them ..... and the only reason i'm letting Mrs. N.C. off is cos I fell foul of the allure too!

Tell you what though I'm in the mood for baking now.

Oh ... and plain , toasted , good butter. That's it but those as want jam can have jam. It's only a bloody tea cake innit

I eat them all year round, like cakes straight from the packet. However, come Easter (fingers crossed), I buy gert bigguns from the local bakery, split and toast them and spread with lashings of proper butter.

For me it’s like pancakes with lemon and sugar, the classics are the best. You can keep your marmalade and, as for the monstrosity Costa are currently pushing - cheese and bacon with jam - they need to be consigned to the bin along with crème egg pizzas.

Last year it was Asda doing tiramisu ones and they weren't the filled variety. New product launched 20th February 2026.

The boss does all his shopping at m&s and looks like he belongs there. They never have any in the back for the weird goth bird that has never been in before 😂

I go with flavoured, no need for anything added. White chocolate and raspberry.

But if adding, it's just jam for me, usually blackcurrant or passion fruit curd as something different.

Untoasted. Split in half and buttered (or spread). I'm very happy with all the variants (even the cheese ones!) except the chocolate versions. Just no!

I need to do a decent survey and get back to you all! Regular traditional ones lightly toasted with butter and a chunk of cheese. Sandwiched. Perfect!
