Condiments in the cupboard or fridge?

Ketchup, mayo, brown sauce, pesto, jam, marmalade, chutney and sauces. Once they’re open, where do you keep yours? I need 175 answers so we can take a majority and then everyone has to abide.

Mine are kept in the cupboard (as was the butter when I was young). I’m 49 and haven’t ever died from food poisoning. I don’t think.

Go.

Round the bend

Up until around a year ago, we used to keep them in the cupboard too, but then hubby started putting open condiments in the fridge, and it's stuck now.

Carlisle usually

Depends what it is.

Egg or dairy content? Fridge. Preserved with spices or sugar? Cupboard. Probably won't use it again for another six months? Bin 💜

Niche

Depends if they'll go manky at room temp.

Butter, red/brown sauce, etc all cupboard.

Mayo, pickles, dressings, mustards, etc all fridge.

Some are better served chilled too though. Room temp mayo is a bit 🤢

Unless a very hot day, butter says out. Its like a housebuilding if in fridge.

Anybody who keeps mustard and ketchup in the fridge is a fruitloop.

In Australia we kept the bread in the fridge let alone condiments...

Each in their right place...

Butter in a butter dish on the counter

Condiments we cook with by the stove (with the spice rack)

open bottles & jars like mayo in the fridge

Jams, and anything unopened, in the press

I genuinely think these instructions are purely to give the manufacturer some legal cover.

In reality all these products were developed to extend the life of produce, before fridges were invented.

I remember as a kid going out to the shed to retrieve a new jar of blackberry jam for our school sandwiches. The first task was always to scrape the mold off, and give the jar a wipe.

"Are we just calling butter a condiment now?"

No, my darling Carlisle buddy, it’s just the only word I could think of that encompasses those kinds of things people have in their kitchens.

All in the fridge once opened. Cupboard when sealed. I actually prefer the consistency of ketchup from the fridge, it's less watery.

St Peter Port

Cupboard for most, although things can become forgotten there.

I cleared to the back of the very deep shelf a couple of years ago to find unused items bought at Booths, a store that we don't have in the Channel islands, meaning that I'd brought them back from Lancaster when my mum died....in 2007!

Think it depends how hot your house is... My flat is like a furnace so keeping Easter eggs in the fridge is a must !

Where I grew up: they were in the cupboard.

My place: they are in the fridge. Not sure why. Maybe I like the cold condiments with hot food?
