For the football anoraks, keep us all posted of your movements as we near the business end of the season.

If all goes to plan, I should chalk up a further 20+ matches this month - starting with Fulham v. Tottenham on Sunday

OP, I’m still recovering from the disappointment of Wilson’s late winner against us in January, and the disrupted train on the way home!

Praying for three points today to open the gap from the bottom three a little. COYS.

Two massive weekends here North of the Border

With Hearts and Motherwell both winning yesterday the pressure is on today

An Old Firm game to end all Old Firm games

Rangers sit in 2nd place 7 points off leaders Hearts but with a game in hand

Celtic are 3rd 2 points behind with Motherwell a point behind them as we enter the business end.

Celtic play their game in hand midweek when they travel to Aberdeen before we have a Scottish Cup Quarter Final once again at Ibrox between the big two.

I’m off this morning to watch my grandson away to Queens Park in the league before the lunch time shenanigans begin.

A positive result either way at Ibrox as good as knocks the loser out of the title race, but a draw would really benefit Hearts.

Still physically recovering from yesterday’s 45-minute yomp back to Lime Street Station and then having to stand for the next 90 minutes on an overcrowded train. Emotionally I had recovered before we even left the ground, as that was as good a performance losing 5-2 as I have seen from us since we last lost to Liverpool by that score nearly 40 years ago.

Off to Craven Cottage on Wednesday evening. Looking forward to playing “Spot Chief Scout” in the crowd.

"A positive result either way at Ibrox as good as knocks the loser out of the title race, but a draw would really benefit Hearts."

Only Hearts and Motherwell benefit from today

2-0 up at half time for Rangers and cruising

Stupid defending at a set piece and it’s 2-1

Then Adair keep on saying, we wait until stoppage time and Celtic are gifted a penalty for what was a dubious handball incident

Butland saves, then saves the rebound only for Hatate to score at the 3rd attempt.

Questions to be asked of poor defensive mistakes from the hosts

If your a Hearts fan, this was a good weekend however, it’s still not over not by a long way

As for me, grandson had a 9am kick off in torrential rain. Didn’t help that it was a grass park as well. His home ground has an all weather surface so and old fashioned grass park that resembled a potato patch.

Up against one of the oldest teams on the planet in Queens Park, albeit their Under 15’s he had a relatively good game as a keeper, made one mistake in the whole match as he was beaten in a one on one inside the box.

Irrelevant in the end as his side walked away with an 8-1 result

Fulham 2 Spurs 1 - and that flattered Tottenham.

I can't recall ever seeing such a poor Spurs team. Watching on, I thought the only Tottenham player (other than Palhinha who was a legend in his couple of years at Fulham) I'd take would be Archie Gray, simply for pure potential.

Spurs host Palace on Thurs (which I'm at) and Forest just before the farce that is the fucking International break. Those two games would appear to be in the 'must win' category. Their saving grace MAY be that West Ham might still have too much to do to get out of trouble. Of course, Fulham host them at The Cottage on Wednesday.

Had £1 bet on all 4 Sunday premier league games being home wins,, get in ,, won £8 ,,, also had £1 on Gunners to win 2-1 another £8 ,, £16 in total for £2 stake ,, happy days ,, wish my ACCA had been a correct score bet all to win 2-1 ,would then have been about £4,000. But not being greedy or disappointed the winnings paid for my diet and crisps while watching Arsenal and Chelsea in pub ( well maybe a little bit disappointed)

My Fulham mate's son had a £5 accumulator over the weekend. Everything came up on Saturday, and he had one final 'leg' on Sun, namely both teams to score in Arsenal v. Chelsea.

£365 win, jammy sod, though to be fair he did immediately get a round in

I may be barking up the wrong tree here and need clarification of this

RULE 14 The Penalty Kick

When I played football 40 years ago when, you took a penalty and missed you, the penalty taker, were not allowed to follow through with the rebound. This had to be done by a teammate

On checking Rule 14 this is confirmed.

What is not 100% clear or I’m not reading it right, you hit the penalty and the keeper saves it but it bounces back does that rule still apply. Do you have to wait until someone else plays the ball or is that someone else the keeper who made the save.

I always seem to remember when hitting penalties that I couldn’t follow through with the rebound and that had to be a teammate.

Call it sour grapes at yesterday’s Old Firm match that yet again whilst Celtic are trailing after the 90 minutes we go into stoppage time and they are awarding a very soft penalty

The penalty taker, Reo Hatate takes his shot, Jack Butland saved the penalty, Hatate follows through with the rebound which again Butland saves only for Hatate to take a 3rd bite at the cherry before scoring.

Yes the Rangers defenders should have reacted to Butland’s save and rushed in to clear their lines but I was sure the law states Hatate cannot hit the rebound after he missed the initial shot

I apologise if I’m wrong, remember I played back in the days of Billy Bremner, Norman Hunter, Chopper Harris etc where leaving stud marks in your opponents legs counted as much as a goal

A penalty taker is not allowed to touch the ball twice , so if ball rebounds of post he can not play the ball but he can if the ball has been touched by the goalkeeper

Yep, if an opposition player (most obviously the goalkeeper) has made contact with the ball, then it becomes live to the penalty taker.

If on the other hand it hits the woodwork, he cannot be the first player to touch it.

What a night for Fulham to spew up their worst performance of the season.

Too many changes from Sunday for starters. No flair, no spark, no imagination.....and DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON FUCKING GOALKEEPERS WHO THINK THEY CAN PLAY.

West Ham were the team who looked as if they had a clue tonight, and gratefully accepted the gift. They won't have an easier win over the rest of the season.

Anyway.....should make Spurs-Palace tomorrow interesting.

Well, having seen them live twice in five days I can only draw the following conclusion - they've gone.

Totally shot confidence wise, no pattern, no shape, no tactics, no inspiration but above all, no fight. And that's something I DID see from West Ham at Fulham on Wednesday

Not an avid follower of the Premiership however, I’d rather support Fulham right now than the likes of Spurs or Notts Forest

Looking at the bottom and the battle to avoid relegation, it doesn’t look too healthy for either.

One or two half decent results for the Hammers and the likes of Spurs could be in serious trouble

They adopted Leyton post war when they moved from Clapton, dropped it in 1966, and reintroduced it in 1987. But have you ever wondered why Orient ?

The answer is they were founded in 1881 (second oldest club in London, Fulham were 1879) by employees of the Pacific & Orient Shipping Company. So if you've ever been on a P&O ferry, it's effectively the same company which gave birth to the O's.

So......who's headed where today ?

The fixture list is a bit odd today due to the F.A. Cup. Watford have no game as they would have hosted Wrexham. The only professional game on in London is Charlton v. Birmingham - not interested in that. Other clubs I occasionally watch such as Millwall/Orient/Wycombe are all up North. Even local non-league options are quite thin, but it looks like I'll head to Burnham v. Harefield.

The rest of the week is full-on heavy ! Double header tomorrow. Fulham host Southampton in the Cup at noon. Even if that goes full works (extra time & pens) it'll be done & dusted well before 3pm, giving me plenty of time to get to Loftus Road, QPR v Middlesbrough at 4.30pm.

Mon - West Ham v. Brentford, FAC5. Tickets as little £10 for adults, so well done WHU (will bring my 150 games up for the season).

Tues - double Millwall header ! QPR U21 v. Millwall U21 at 1pm, then 1st XI v. Derby in evening.

Weds - Oxford v. Blackburn. I note Oxford climbed out of the bottom three last night. Is another great escape on ? Proper relegation six pointer.

Thurs - Crystal Palace v. Larnaca now on general sale, so booking for that in a minute.

Fri - couple of U21 matches. Watford v. Wigan at The Vic at 1pm (free on my ST), while Arsenal v. Leicester at Boreham Wood at 7pm is also free admission.

Sat - Millwall v. Blackburn. The 'wall just need to hold their nerve to keep a play off spot.

Sun - Nott'm Forest v. Fulham. Always like a trip to the City Ground.

Anyway, always keen to see what everyone else is up to, so safe travels if you're heading out today or over the next few days

Superb win for them. They SHOULD be looking for six points off the two home games this week.

Burnham scored early against Harefield today, but it wasn't until they added a second late on and a third in stoppage time that the scoreline had a realistic look to it (3-0 FT).

Up here we have an afternoon of disgraceful scenes that were long gone from Scottish football

At Ibrox Stadium Celtic played 120 mins without having a shot at goal

Wave after wave of Rangers attacks and plenty of shots that were more or less all off target

Neither keeper had an actual save to make

2 disallowed goals. Celtic for offside, Rangers for handball

And then we go to penalties

Jack Butland has faced 5 penalties this season and saved all 5, albeit Shankland of Hearts and Hatate of Celtic scored with rebounds. So hopes were high

You’d bet your mortgage on Tavernier, Rangers regular penalty taker but, he hit the bar and that started the tension Gassama then put his kick over the bar

Celtic win on penalties and then the bedlam began

Neither team is allocated away tickets to Old Firm games for a simple reason

Today Celtic were allocated 7,500 tickets for one end of the stadium and when the winning penalty hit the net their supporters invaded the park

The celebrations and the goading began. Before the stewards or Police could react Hundreds of Union Bears (The Rangers Ultras) invaded the park too.

Pyrotechnics were fired at each other and the melee began

Disappointing thing for me was after the clear up we had the post match interviews

The SFA have condemned the fans and will be holding an enquiry into what happened

Danny Rohl of Rangers condemned the aftermath. He did say he didn’t see it as he had ushered his players up the tunnel and was inside

Martin O’Neil seemed to stoke the embers with comments like the absence of away supporters kills the atmosphere in the stadium and that is what makes the Old Firm derbies stand out from any other. This is not the first time either O’Neil or his predecessor Neil Lennon has opened his mouth without engaging his brain whenever there is this kind of behaviour at a derby match

Nothing has been reported as yet however, I do expect sporadic violence throughout Glasgow as the rest of the evening and night goes on

Middx/Herts borders-ish or thereabouts !

Reflections on today. Not a good day for football in West London.

You've all heard the term "Spursy". Well, there's one for the other London team in white - "Fulhamish".

I've lost count of the times I've seen it. Fulham, on the whole, play nice football. But it can be TOO nice. Too many touches, an extra pass instead of being adventurous, and nowhere near enough shots on goal. Only one striker up front and no Plan B, NEVER a Plan fucking B. After an hour or so, the game was crying out for a spark, a second striker should have been bought on, but no Silva sits on his hands, makes a few tinkerings. 89th minute, bang. Soft foul, penalty (without question a penalty), 0-1 to Southampton. Thank you and good night, Fulham's season absolutely thrown down the fucking shitter.

The manager HAS to be flexible and have options up his sleeve when there is a game begging to be won. And if the manager CAN'T be flexible and have a Plan B to hand, then MAYBE it's time to change the manager. With of course the caveat "be careful what you wish for" (indeed, be VERY fucking careful what you wish for) perhaps Marco Silva is getting to the point where he's outstayed his welcome. After all, he HAS been there five years. The Championship-winning season of 2021-22 was absolutely magnificent, there's been a League Cup semi-final, and extended runs in the Cups in general. But he just doesn't seem to have nous to edge them onto the next stage. His contract IS up this summer, and I gather although they're talking and he's yet to sign.

It feels as if it's the natural time for both parties to try something different, but finding the right man to try and take Fulham a bit further, well, that's another matter. As with all clubs at that sort of level, one year a season will catch up with them and they'll be back in the Championship. It's a VERY difficult one to call.

So after a spot of lunch in a lovely cafe on the Fulham Palace Road, it was off to Shithouse Road, and if Fulham's season has been casually tossed away, then Queens Park Rangers' campaign is dying on its arse without as much as a whimper. They were comprehensively taken apart by Middlesbrough this afternoon. Boro's third goal was worth the admission money on its own. QPR's only decent effort on target was a long range shot which clipped the base of the post.....in the 85th minute. Out of the play off race and clearly not in any danger of going down, QPR's season is as good as over already.

So my 150 games for the season comes up tomorrow at West Ham v. Brentford. Not sure if I'll hit 200, March is busy, but April & May currently look a bit thin. With the possible exception of the WFA Cup Final, I will not compromise on no women's games and I certainly won't go below Step 5 Non-League (fuck me, I have got SOME standards). One odd stat. My last ten games, two home wins, one draw, and SEVEN away wins !!!

Not heard anything official as yet however, there is one more Old Firm game to come this season at Celtic Park and you can guarantee Rangers will not be allocated tickets and that will continue on to next season

A poor reflection of Scottish football but also life in Glasgow in general every time these two meet

This is the reason I stopped playing the game.

After similar scenes at the 1980 Scottish Cup Final I was involved in a cup match with an amateur team located not a stones throw from one of the big two’s stadium.

Now I support one of them however, the team I played for are located next to the opposing teams ground and their second choice strip is the same colours

After putting my team 2 in front I was brought down, stamped on and spat at by the opposing centre back. I was also called some unrepeatable sectarian names.

I have since been attacked a number of times due to my job in Glasgow by one side of this “Glasgows disgrace” and what sickens me most they have been from members of the Ultra squad from the team I support

You don’t have to be one side of the coin here, if you try to stop a melee like the stewards did yesterday it just fuels the perpetrators as happened.

One side goad the other and when you have 51,000 animals in a zoo with ONE brain cell among them this is what happens

It will never change, I have a grandson who is 14 and plays football similar to myself, he supports one side of the divide but plays for a team who are part of the other he has been well schooled in the history of both Scotland and Ireland yet, he has friends that would have been on that park spitting rage at the other

We don’t need to look at the news to see what is happening in Iran or Gaza or Ukraine, just put the Green Brigade at one side of Argyle Street and the Union Bears at the other and we have murder and mayhem

Heaven forbid when the King passes and Prince William (King Billy) ascend the throne

Glasgow and Belfast may possibly revert back to scenes from the 1970’s

The atmosphere inside the stadium during one of these games is electrifying but toxic as the hatred goes beyond football

I’ve attend derby matches throughout the rest of the UK and went for a pint afterwards with both sets of supporters.

That doesn’t happen up here,

I have friends who are of a mixed marriage and are both living separately until the chaos dies down. If not they have a record of domestic violence during Old Firm games. Theirs is not solitary, I have spoken to other couples who have similar issues on derby day.

I’ve been told pubs in Livingston on the day of old firm games and the fact there were pubs that were for one set of fans or the other just to watch the game on tv is madness , I was in a mixed pub.. but still the fans were watching two different sets of TVs

The north London derby in the early to mid 90’s went through that really toxic phase

the first cup semi final at Wembley was nuts where there was blood on platforms at various underground stations, the battle at King’s Cross… the rumble at Baker Street

The cup semi at old Trafford timed to start so early on the Sunday morning that trains from London wouldn’t get there for kick off so there were fights all over West Yorkshire and greater Manchester the night before

I am glad it’s nowhere near as bad now…. It’s on the right side of good old fashioned hate now

Well, I'm pleased that was a 7.30 kick off & not later !

Interesting evening over at Wet Spam. Lively enough game to keep the neutral entertained, though not a spectacularly exciting game. Made a change to see two teams who looked halfway interested in trying to go through.

Shame to see as many empty seats as there was. Fans complain about unaffordable football, yet when it's offered up for a tenner, they still can't be bothered.

I'm also convinced that with the exception of the semi-final & final, extra time should be scrapped. It was a very sterile extra thirty minutes, everyone scared of making THE mistake which would send their team out. Seen it happen so many times. Just go to penalties and have done with it.

I think I'd like to see whoever progresses out of West Ham or Leeds win it. Clearly Port Vale and Southampton will go our in the quarters, I've no desire whatsoever to see Arsenal or Chelsea win it, nor City or Liverpool. Would be refreshing to see a team who haven't won it for either 46 or 54 years take it.

Anyway, next up is a 'Wall double header. QPR U21 host their U21 at Loftus Road at 1pm (free admission, but they have Community Trust collectors encouraging donations instead, I usually stick a fiver in), while 1st XI host Derby at The Den in the evening

Back in Malice

Thanks to the Victoria Line inexplicably not running a train for ten minutes (then 3 in 3) and the A41 being shut again, I rolled in at gone 1 am this morning after a 7.30 ko.

The game itself was decent enough, although extra time offered very little. Glad their lad fluffed his pen, as Areola won’t actively save a penalty for as long as he’s got a hole in his ‘Aris.

Off to Hillsborough tonight to see Watford. No interest in the game whatsoever, but gives me an opportunity to spend time with a couple of mates and visit a great stadium I haven’t had cause to visit for many years.

Hope to be at Boreham Wood on Friday to take my grandson to see Arsenal’s u21s. Happy to encourage him being a gooner, as he has Rent Boy and Yid influences hiding in the background.

So, the 'Wall double header !

U21 game at QPR was a slow burner. A total non event of a first half, it could only - and did - improve in the second half, well taken long range strikes on the hour and then in stoppage time giving QPR a 2-0 win.

Onto the seniors this evening, and a hard fought competitive match with Derby. Millwall the better team in the first half, and nabbed the lead just before the break. But it proved to be a typical fast paced end to end Championship fame in the second, in particular Derby missed three or four gilt-edged chances which they ought to have put away. Millwall held on for the win, but there could have been no complaints had Derby forced a draw.

Millwall now fourteen points clear of 7th (indeed currently Derby), so play off spot for Millwall as good as wrapped up. Back on Sat for sold out game with Blackburn, whom I shall also indeed see later on at Oxford - likely to be a very poignant evening, as they pay tribute to youth girls' goalkeeper who collapsed on the pitch and sadly passed away at a game over the weekend 😔

Lovely day out In Sheffield yesterday. Enjoyable game of football that Wednesday deserved to win. Their fans gave them fantastic support, far better than anything I have heard in the Prem this season, Leeds excepted. Hillsborough is a fantastic stadium, still one of my all time faves.

Watford were very mediocre second half and did not deserve their point.

It was interesting being a neutral in the away end, where Stone Island and CP Company jackets were conspicuous by their absence.

Got home twenty minutes earlier from Sheffield than I did East London the night before. World class stadium with world class transport links eh, Karen.

Home from one of the most emotionally charged evenings I've ever experienced watching football.

If you weren't aware, Oxford United's Girls' Youth goalkeeper (a 15 year old named Amelia Aplin) collapsed and died during a game with Fulham at the weekend. You just never know, eh ?

So obviously their game with Blackburn tonight was always going to be an awkward occasion. You'd have needed a heart of granite not to get churned up by the tributes. I don't think I've ever heard a more impeccably observed minute's silence and Peter Rhoades-Brown, now Oxford's main match day announcer/on-the-pitch man was only just about keeping it together as he read out a statement. And those poor girls, felt so sorry for them.

Then on 15 minutes, referee David Webb (in my opinion the best in the Championship) stopped the game to allow a minute's applause. Clearly from Peter R-B's remarks at half time, this was at his own instigation, it doesn't appear anyone at the club was expecting it.

So to the game itself - Oxford were the better team throughout, deservedly took the lead and held it. Margin of victory should have been more. Blackburn didn't create an effort on goal worthy of the description. Bottom of the Championship with two relegation spots to avoid is now incredibly tight, Oxford have taken ten points from six games to give themselves a chance (Portsmouth 40 pts, Blackburn 39, Leicester/Oxford 38, West Brom 37), the battle at the bottom is as tight as it is at the top.

Anyway, it simply HAD to be Oxford's night.

PL2 action at Boreham Wood on Friday evening - and the best team display I've seem from an Academy/Youth team this season.....but it wasn't Arsenal.

Firstly the game with Leicester U21 nearly got postponed. There was an appeal over the p.a. just before kick off "for any qualified match official in the crowd to make themselves known at the players' tunnel". Presumably one of the officials either took ill or picked up an injury in the warm up or just didn't get there. Anyway, somebody was found to handle 4th official duties, and we started ten minutes late. Actually it could be argued Arsenal started some time even later.

In short in the opening stages, they couldn't get the ball off Leicester, simply couldn’t get near them. Passing was crisp and accurate, Leicester's pace and movement off the ball was intelligent, and their forward play was razor sharp. And on the basis of what I saw, here's a name for you to note - Riley Carr. Ran the game from the right wing, totally bossed it. The visitors were 0-3 to the good inside 35 minutes.

Arsenal did pinch one back just before the break, but that was as good as it got. They had no answer to anything Leicester were doing, and Carr capped his performance with a stupendous 25 yarder into the top corner on the hour. When Leicester added another with around three minutes to go, it was not an unfair reflection of the play. 1-5 FT, and as I say, best team performance I've had the pleasure of seeing from an Academy team this season.

So, what's everyone up to later. It's back to The Den for me to see if Millwall can take another step towards wrapping up a play off spot (though it should be noted they are now just a point behind Middlesbrough, and the teams do meet in a couple of weeks). And if Blackburn play as abjectly as they did at Oxford in the week, they should comfortably do so. But we all know what a bonkers division the Championship is. Then it's off to the City Ground for Nottingham Forest v. Fulham on Sunday.

As always, if you're headed out somewhere, safe travels and enjoy your game.

Bit late with my reflections from Saturday. Good reason for it ! Did TWO games.

Millwall v. Blackburn. Once again the unpredictability of the Championship reared its ugly head to prevent Millwall going second. Actually, they didn't play well, particularly in first half they just didn't get going. Alex Neil made a couple of half time changes and was soon rewarded with a delightful goal from Luke Cundle. Then referee Andrew Kitchen, who had a shocking game throughout, took centre stage, and sent Zak Sturge off for a 'professional foul' despite being some 25 yards or so out. Blackburn made the most of the man advantage and pounced with two late goals. They were vastly improved on Wednesday's showing at Oxford, but benefitted from a massive handful out from the referee no doubt about it. But Millwall did look somewhat "off it" today.

Anyway, while pottering around and planning my day, had a message come through from another sad bastard anorak. "Dynamic pricing" applied to West Ham's remaining seats for City game. Well, as I was near-as-dammit in the area, it was rude not to ! So off I trotted to West Ham. Not the prettiest game, but not the worst. Very lack lustre showing from City, but West Ham are much improved on pre-Christmas, battled hard, and I thought deserved their point. It's Arsenal's title now without a shadow of doubt. So that's games 156 & 157 under my belt.

Anyway my lovelies, it's off to Nottingham Forest later on, so nitey-night 💋

Still fuming about that terrible Red card decision plus the penalty not given for the foul on Azeez.

I've been a Sunderland season ticket holder for years, watched the club during its darkest days, etc but there's something about being in the Premier League that feels dull.

Aye, it was great at the start of the season being at the top end of the table but the lack of Saturday games at 3PM, having to regularly hold displays before kickoff just all feels a bit manufactured. I felt that way too the last time we were in the Premier League but it'd been so long I'd forgotten.

Aye, we've invested in some good signings but what I enjoyed over the last few seasons was bringing through our own academy players and watching them grow, only to realise the gap between the Premier League and Championship is so vast that we'll likely never see another academy player come through good enough to compete.

Rant over

Geeky, I did not read this as a rant, just a fair assessment of how life is in the Prem for fans of most clubs there.

I was due to watch my lot at 12.30 yesterday afternoon. With two weeks notice it got moved to 8pm, at which point I had arranged a night out with my Wife and friends.

I saw a Championship game on Tuesday which reminded me just how good that league is. Two teams trying to attack as quickly as possible, no tippy-tappy bollocks around the box, and pure passion from the terraces. Very few tourist types in Sheffield on a Tuesday night.

If we go down, no tears at my end, as I rarely miss a game when we’re in the Championship.

And he had plenty of work to do, the header to get control of the ball, and then the little knock past the defender to create the space.

I first saw him in a Youth Cup tie just over a year ago, and a former manager I know said he was "best 15 year old [at that point] I've seen in years".

So, tonight’s the biggest game of the season. You can keep your FIFA World Cups, your Champions League, your Premier League. This is THE BIG ONE! The National League Cup Final, Boreham Wood v West Ham United u21s.

Fair play to BW, who gave us 1250 free tickets. Lovely gesture that, as we would probably have sold 500.

They will start as favourites, a potentially very good game awaits.

And I got what I wanted.

First half was as good as anything I've seen from Watford this season. 2-0 at HT & dominant. Of course they HAVE to do things the difficult way and quickly conceded in the second half and Wrexham were much improved . But Watford's third goal in stoppage time wrapped it up and put a realistic margin to the scoreline.

Big thumbs up to referee Adam Herzceg who allowed a good game to flow - NO bookings.

With eight to play, Watford now five points behind Wrexham..Had the visitors won, it would clearly have finished Watford's season. I still don't think (or particularly want) Watford to feature in the play-offs, nowhere near good enough, but it keeps the season going. Home to Leicester on Saturday

Despite being 160 miles apart I went to the Fish Derby ,, Grimsby v Fleetwood ( Mariners V Cod Army ) , enjoyed the game Grimsby best team in 1st half don't know how they didn't score , and although better than Fleetwood in 2nd half Fleetwood had alot more break aways in 2nd half , I would have said it one of the better 0-0 games I have seen but can't say that now as Grimsby won it in dying seconds , maybe fair result over the 90 minutes but had to feel sorry for Fleetwood ,, again I raise my point about people leaving early ( yes I get it if you need public transport ,, had to do the same myself at a game last week ) but the numbers leaving early were I am sure not all heading for a bus or train ,, I get it's up to each individual to leave when he/she chooses but you could tell from the exited voices when leaving myself how much the Grimsby fans who stayed enjoyed the last minute winner,, still it their choice it just that they gone paid their hard earned money but then missed the best bit ,,no disrespect to the players staff or fans of Grimsby but the best thing about attending games at Blundell Park , or at least one of the highlights is pre match fish & chips in Cleethorpes tonight being no exception

Great game at Boreham Wood last night, as our u21s gave an excellent account of themselves, losing 7-6 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time.

Got to feel for our keeper, who had been superb and probably our Motm. In the 93rd minute of 94 he let a speculative long range shot squirm through his fingers. Then, with us leading 5-4 on pens, he dived the right way for the first time in the shoot out, ball hit the inside of the post, came back out, hit him on the back and went in. When your lucks out….

Congrats to BW, who have really gone up in my estimation as a club. Free tickets to season ticket holders of both clubs, hosted the final at a loss, friendly welcome given to all.

Bigger congrats to our youngsters, who have been superb all season and given us some great nights out at grounds we would never normally go to. Hope the competition carries on next year. Now, if we can just draw Wealdstone, Eastleigh, Woking and Dorking …..

You don't always need to spend big or aim high time see a thriller.

The "Non League Matters" website had a list crammed full of Wednesday night fixtures, with Aylesbury v Thame (at Chesham) being the most convenient one.

A great flowing game, neither goalkeeper will look back on tonight with fondness. Aylesbury were 2-0 up inside 30 minutes, though Thame pulled one back before half-time. Early in the second half they were awarded (& scored) a dubious penalty, but before they could enjoy parity, the home side were back in front . Thame got another equaliser with around ten minutes to go. Neither side could find a winner, but the 3-3 draw was a cracking evening's entertainment

Lovely day in the sun at Hitchin Town yesterday, who deservedly ran out 3-1 winners as they continue their push for automatic promotion (while the Ducks flirtation with relegation threatens to become a full blown marriage).

My first visit there and I have to say that I have rarely come across a non league club more up its own arse. No turnstile payments, so I needed to go to the box office to pay £15 (everyone else in the league is £10-11). The box office is next to a gate leading straight into the ground, but I was told I needed to walk back to the turnstiles, as this gate was for readmittance from the club house only. I turned down the is kind invitation for getting some extra steps in.

Game itself was as one-sided as we feared it would be. Still, t good opportunity to get started on the 2026 tan.

Good call ! Didn't expect someone to home in on it so quickly.

The FULL answer is between 1970 and 1974 there was a 3rd/4th place play off match. It stemmed from the days in the 1950's & 60's when people travelled down to the Cup Final the day before by train.

To lay on a Friday evening game to keep folk occupied, there used to be an England v. Young England game (effectively a trial match) either at Stamford Bridge or Highbury. However gates tailed off towards the end of the 1960's and the 3rd place match replaced it in 1970 (though only the first two were Friday nighters in London).

In the early 1970's Greenhoff was in the Stoke side that lost successive semi-finals to Arsenal. In 1971 Stoke beat Everton in the 3rd place match (would you believe in front of around 5000 at Selhurst Park ? No wonder it never caught on). The 1972 match took place on the weekend prior to the new season. Birmingham & Stoke drew 0-0 at St. Andrews with Birmingham then winning the first penalty shoot out in the competition's history.

Of course in 1977 Greenhoff was credited with the winning goal when Lou Macari's shot deflected off his chest to beat Ray Clemence. Then in 1979 Jimmy was in the team which lost to Arsenal.

So....Jimmy Greenhoff is the ONLY player with a winners medal, a runners-up medal, and both 3rd place and 4th place tankards

I'm gonna do the tour of Anfield while and go see Goodison (no yours for that, unfortunately)."

New Everton stadium is magnificent. Saw Fulham there in November, also saw Youth Cup tie there last month, and did stadium tour too. Only problem is getting away from it quickly, the only real way in & out is Sandhills Station on Merseyrail.

It's great that Goodison is still in use though how long it will be viable to keep two grounds like that operational is another matter. Tour guides at the HDS said the other week that there no immediate plans to close it and it will stay open for women's and some major youth matches. Personally, I think they'll just give it a few years until everyone is used to the new one before closing it. Derby kept the Baseball Ground on for around five years after the move to Pride Park.

When I was up in the North West around six weeks ago I did check EFC's website. They do list Goodison tours as an item, but none live at present. I guess it's maybe something they'll do in the summer only.

"

Was at goodison years ago for the dave watson testimonial. Was running battles all day.

"

I've got a Rangers player issue shirt from that match (white Nike one which gradually shades black towards the bottom) in my collection. It's numbered 18, wasn't worn in the match but was thought to be swapped between a substitute on each side

Picked it up on ebay many moons ago from a bloke in the North West who "....believed it game from a game played on Merseyside ". A bit of quick research would have pinpointed it to Dave Watson's Testimonial in July 1997.

I'm still gonna go a wander past Goodison, though.

So little of his work left now. I'm fortunate enough to see a piece of his work every couple of weeks. The Stevenage Road stand (& The Cottage in the corner) at Fulham were built in 1905 and are his oldest surviving structures. Both Grade II listed buildings so only essential maintenance work can be carried out.

His stand at Crystal Palace is earmarked to come down soon. There are a couple of bits and pieces left at Fratton Park, two sides at Goodison, and as you're obviously well aware the main stand at Ibrox.

There is a superb book (I have a copy) written by Simon Inglis & published by English Heritage back in 2005 entitled "Engineering Archie", detailing his work, but VERY hard to find now.

They won't blow the title. City can't afford to drop a point and even then it would need Arsenal to lose another game or draw a couple elsewhere. If they come away from City having avoided defeat it'll be all over

North Ferriby again for Hull U21 V Swansea U21 was expecting bad weather but was OK , got a bit breezy but not too cold , was instance of how a game can change Hull 1-0 up and really pressing , the Swansea keeper makes 3 great saves in a few minutes stopping it going 2-0 and within maybe 15 minutes of that Swansea are 3-1 Infront finally winning 4-1 ,, really good game , scoreline a bit harsh on Hull ,, Contemplating Scunthorpe v Rochdale, with York losing at Gateshead Rochdale have a real chance of pushing on for the one automatic promotion place from National League ( Rochdale play York final day of season) , I mentioned last month that I went to see Sheffield FC ( the worlds oldest club) at Barton they were well beaten 4-0 , last night they confirmed their place in playoffs , since the defeat at Barton they have won 7 and drawn 1 ,you wouldn't have expected that run if you had seen them at Barton , also enjoyed watching the Arsenal v Chelsea womens European game on TV and looking forward to the Wales and Northern Ireland World Cup qualifiers both been shown on BBC Thursday night

No takers in what hasn't happened in the F.A. Cup Final since 1970 then ? Suppose I better give you the answer.

As anyone who can remember it or has seen footage will tell you, Chelsea & Leeds spent four hours kicking the shit out of each other. And with good reason too !

It was the last time the Final was contested by two teams who hadn't previously won the Cup.

On the subject of not having won the Cup.....can you name the TWELVE teams who have appeared in the Final but not won it. (Up until five years ago list was 14, but Leicester & Crystal Palace have come off it)

Off the top of my head I’ll have a guess at a few. Fulham,Burnley, Milwall, Stoke, Hull, Watford, Brighton, Luton, Blackburn and QPR? Not too sure about the really early days but I’m sure I’ve seen these teams in a final when I watched back some old matches. Burnley won it in 1947 and Blackburn have actually won it six times (though not since 1928). The other eight are all correct.

The remaining four are....

Queen's Park (as in the Scottish club, lost two finals to Blackburn in the 1880s).

Bristol City (lost to Man Utd in 1909).

Birmingham (1931 & 1956)

Middlesbrough (1997)

" I believe the 1970 FA cup final and replay were played in April to help England have better preparation for the 1970 World Cup. All other finals have been played in May "

There were plenty of occasions, mainly prior to the 1950's when the Final was played on the last Saturday in April. The 1969 Final was also played on April 26th to accommodate the early start for Season 1969-70. And of course, the 2023 Final was played on June 3rd after the mid season break for that World Cup.

It wasn't until 1954 that the Final was a "stand alone" event on the last day of the season. Prior to that, there were regularly League games on the same day. But the televising of the 1953 Final was a success and changed everything. Indeed, it led to something unique happening the following season. The Football League had already planned the schedule for 1953-54 well in advance, and the last day's fixtures would have coincided with the F.A. Cup Final (May 1st). So they pulled the whole fixture list for that day forward and they became the first set of matches, played in the midweek before the original start date of the season - thus 1953-54 is the only season which kicked off with a full set of midweek fixtures rather than a Saturday start.

Moving on to the Football League Cup....

What was unique about the 1975 Final (Aston Villa v. Norwich) ?

Thought I'd drop in and give a shout out to my local team who I've supported now for almost 40 years.

What has happened at the club in the last five years is still a punch me moment, to think we are fighting for a Championship play off place after all those years of shit owners, court battles and non league.

A lot of us thought this season would be only about survival and retaining a Championship place for next season...yet we could still have a go at another promotion!

Though I think that is way too fast for us, the off the field stuff has not accelerated as fast as on the pitch.

Yes, only major final at Wembley between two Second Division clubs. Incidentally the losing semi-finalists were Manchester United - also in Div 2 that season, and promoted with Villa and Norwich that year - and Chester from Div 4. Villa manager Ron Saunders was also leading a different team out in third successive League Cup Final, Norwich in 1973, Man City in 1974.

Rotherham and Rochdale. The '62 Final was also between two non-Div 1 teams, but the Final was a two-legged event, it didn't move to Wembley until 1967. The only fourth tier team to get to a Wembley Final were Bradford in 2013.

Wales eh ? Went in front & stopped playing !

While I don't particularly enjoy International football - or put more succinctly, if England were playing in my back garden I'd close the curtains - I've actually been to a few Wales home games in last couple of years. Had a 91 year old aunt near Newport to whom I was next of kin and spent the last couple of years in care. Once a month or so I would go to the house for a couple of days, make it look lived in, go through post, deal with any problems etc, and of course pay her a visit at carehome.

Naturally I'd pick dates which meant I could get to a game or two if possible, so saw a handful of games at Cardiff City and a couple at Newport. Thought to myself atmosphere at Cardiff would be magic when it's full for a Wales home game - it didn't disappoint.

First one was a friendly with South Korea on a boiling hot September evening - that was a poor game which ended goalless, but I was back a month later for a Euro 2024 qualifier with Croatia which they won 2-1. Atmosphere in there was crazy that evening. Two years ago this week (it will indeed be two years this coming Monday since my aunt passed away) I was also at the play off semi-final which they won 4-1 against Finland. It's definitely a superb venue when it's full for International matches.

Anyway, I have a game this afternoon in the Professional Development League, Watford U21 v. Coventry U21 at Vicarage Road, 2pm start, free entry for me on my ST.

Scotland v Japan wasn't much entertainment.

Scotland played a 4-2-3-1 / 4-2-2-2 all game, but Japan were playing a very fluid 3-4-2-1 which was constantly morphing so players could block passing lanes, mark their man, etc.

Scotland kept being stuck with possession at the back and no real access to the middle of the park.

A few decent chances for Scotland, but Japan were clearly the better team, and even though their goal was scrappy and a bit lucky, they deserved to win.

Such is the way of friendlies at Hampden

The hosts took the little but Welwyn scored twice to lead at half time. Then in second half Welwyn keeper let ball through his legs to give Northwood a tap in and a 2-2 draw.

So after 166 games....78 home wins, 35 draws, 53 aways. Goals 260 v. 212.

Middx/Herts borders-ish or thereabouts !

Cracking ground, isn't it ? They've done a good job with it, just need to try and do something with transport links

Glasgow

It is, but very much agreed on the transport links, and the surrounding area needs a wee bit of smartening up.

You can see it was really rundown for a long time and a lot of it still is.

But the stadium is lovely.
