One for the chaps. Any of you guys been a best man? I've got the honour of being one next month, and I'm literally shitting myself. 6 months has passed when I was asked, and confidently agreed to be the greatest best man in the history of wedding days. Public speaking is something that makes me go weak at the knees (with terror), I despise the sound of my own voice, and hate being the centre of attention (even if it is for a few minutes). Any tips which I could use to overcome my fear of talking in front of a room full of people? Cheers.

When I did it, I asked the wife to make sure she was prominent in the crowd, then I just delivered the speech to her, pretending no one else was there.

also, practice the speech

Have you written your speech OP. Maybe practising out loud could help. Even recording yourself so you can get used to how you sound. The idea above of projecting your speech to one person in the crowd helps me when I’ve got to present something.

Try not to be too nervous. And if it’s too much just tell the groom. I’m sure he wouldn’t want you to be tearing yourself up in knots about it. Sending hugs

I've been to weddings where the best man did shorter lil bits as he introduced others so it was less of a monologue.

People definitely enjoy a bit of a joke and some memories but they also want their dinner 😁

It's written, and I've showed it to a few work colleagues who have told me is very good. It's full of jokes and stories which will make the groom squirm in his seat a bit, but nothing too revealing. I'll definitely be directing the speech to someone in front of me, that's a great piece of advice. Thank you.

It is funny, and definitely not long winded. I'd say it's short enough so people don't end up falling asleep 😂.

Cheers, I'll take a look on YouTube, but so far the speech is personalised to specific events during our friendship. If there are some generalised gags on there I could adapt into it, I could do.

The only advice I can give you is, nobody wants to hear you rabbit on for hours, keep it short and sweat. Hit the basics, thank who you have to thank, tell a short, hopefully funny but clean story, sit down. Job done.

I went to one in the UK with an ex, her cousin was getting married, the bestman spoke for 90minutes, it was torture.
