I'm pretty dense when it comes to picking up of subtlety and reading between the lines but i also have no real "game" when it comes to flirting etc.

How can you tell if someone is flirting with you as I don't default to the "she's flirting with me" response and just assume she's being friendly with me

I think when people are flirting it's easier to tell from their body language and eye contact than their words

She'll lay on her side, leg in the air, tongue out like a exhibitionist cat. If she doesn't do this, she isnt flirting.

Don’t forget knickers hanging off one shoe!

But what about out in public as I've been told at work that i was being flirted with and i didn't notice especially since I don't think about that kind of stuff when interacting with customers as it could cost me my position if they reported me

I agree with you OP. I've always seen it as friendly, never flirting. It's difficult to decipher for some of us. I'm wary of getting it wrong and being ridiculed or getting in trouble. Too risky for me. I much prefer if a person just tells me they like me.

Unfortunately that's not how the world works. Some people flirt because they enjoy the game, others do it because they are genuinely interested.

That's what I'd wish would happen as I'm a blunt and up front kinda person as one of my biggest fears when it comes to socialising is misunderstanding something someone said as one thing and it was totally incorrect. E.g thinking someone fancies you and it turns out incorrect and you've now ruined your friendship with them

When their is chemistry there and both parties are open, then the flirting flows easily.

Things I pick up on are to gauge if someone is into me:

Lots of smiling and eye contact

Playing with their hair

Laughing at my silly jokes/ one liners

A little touch in my arm or shoulder during a conversation.

If none of the above is happening, then I know that they are probably not into me and I leave any flirting alone.

If i see those types of actions being made I'll have to consider if i should shoot my shot (assuming i find her attractive as well) as i don't default to the "she's attracted to me and os flirting with me"

Tbf compliments are few and far for me so when i get a compliment like "i like your hair" I don't really know how to respond and just say thanks

I just flirt indiscriminately. However, I ruffle my plumage at those I find quite fanciable.
