Should you always meet the traffic?

From the land of haribos.

I like to walk in the countryside and some of the lanes there have blind corners that cut straight to the sides so you cant see the oncoming traffic.

I know that you should meet the traffic, but lets say I am meeting the traffic on the turn on the correct side. I feel that I have to go over on the other side so that the driver can see me, because if I walk on the correct side it is a blind spot for the drivers where they wouldnt see when they turn towards me so they cut into the side more.

So by walking on the other side it feels a lot safer, because I can have more of an eye contact with the drivers.

It would be interesting to see what you would be doing in this kind of scenario, would you do like me and walk on the other side so the drivers have more chance if seeing you too?

You should always walk on the right if there's no pavement - so the oncoming traffic have to serve round you and no cars have the chance to inadvertantly rear end you.

"Should you always meet the traffic?"

OP I may have misunderstood your thread. Are the ladies of Fab causing you inconvenience as they block your street beating their way to your door?

In narrow country roads I was taught to walk on the outside of bends for max visibility. Seems logical.

I always cross to the other side on a blind corner and it is annoying how many don't.

I've had a few close calls with walkers on blind corners.

I also can't believe the number of dog walkers who are out at 05.30 in the dark dressed from head to toe in black and no light or hi Vis.

Hi edible, yes, you are right there, to walk on the right side, so the oncoming traffic have to serve round you too

Yes, it seems more logical to walk on the outside of bends for max visibility too

Agreed. Into traffic normally so you can see what’s coming and switch on blind bends if you can and it’s safe.

And Fabbing on your phone whilst you walk along isn’t good practice (but can be good for the soul.) 😀

Stay safe OP.

This is what the Countryside Code teaches us (or at least it did back when I was a child)

I'd generally walk on the right

, unless I sensed potential great danger. I'd not stick around on the left for long, as it's wrong

Not Local

I just would not be walking on lanes at all these days, but I tend to walk on the left if I do, with the flow of traffic. I hate it when I am driving and have someone walking at me, against the flow, it feels wrong and If you dont see them in time they will just walk straight into your bonnet. If they are walking the same direction as me I can screech to a stop at least or they can run away. Off road hiking is much safer

Worthing

On the subject, be careful in carparks. With ambient noise around, an ev cannot be heard easily.

Yeah I'd go wide on the particularly tight or blind corners whichever side of the road I end up walking on

by the big field

I live in the country and while road walkers aren't a huge problem, the amount of them and cyclists that bimble along in all black, wearing headphones and back to the traffic is unbelievable. Nearly hit one fool last week on his bike dressed as above, cycling in the dark with no fucking lights on either!

Bearing in mind the size of the cattle trucks and the tractors/trailers zipping round the farms, not making yourself visible and paying attention to your surroundings, instead of music/podcast is crazy.

Its in the highway code, you should walk facing the oncoming traffic. So you can see what is coming.
