If you are caught speeding most forces offer you a speed awareness course as you receive no points on your licence and any of the associated costs to your insurance and the believe that education rather than punishment works best.

I did one last year and I have to say my driving has improved because of it. I now realise that it's not really that important if someone overtakes me. Just let them through. You don't actually save that much time speeding anyway.

Makese laugh when people moan how boring they are. If you don't want to do the course don't speed. It's quite simple really.

Does your force run the courses? Or the force you were caught in because if it was in another area of the country it would be them sorting it out. I think I was doing 35 in a 30 when I did mine in Worcestershire.

I would have thought it would give you the option of either the fine or the course.

As Logi said, not all forces do them.

I think if you are within 10% of the limit you can be offered one.

Police forces do certain exercises to target different crimes.

If people didn't break the law speeding, then that would give them more time to concentrate on burglers, paedo's etc.

so it was a coincidence that day after rise in fine they all appeared?

motoerists are easy targets , always will be , and yes breaking speed limits is against the law , esp if your doing well over 70 as some do , but as guy says 35 in 30? .

I'm in Northunbria forces area and I now the do run course so judging by your experiences I should be offered one.. That's the good news..... However, I believe I may have been snapped this week in a different location so I'm waiting to see if I get another letter!!! Gutted cos apparently you can only do 1 course.

I've learnt my lesson already and I havnt done the course yet.

Guilty as charged Me Lord!!!!

That happened to me and you can only do one course in three years but 3 points are better than 6

I think although not totally sure, that if you are within 10% of the limit, you are not actually penalised.

I didn't even know it had gone up lol

And if it was a 30 limit its likely to have been a residential area with kids on the streets and increased risk of pedestrians walking out. Even more reason to be vigilant of speeding wouldn't you say?

The difference in braking distances in just 5mph are Big and the increased risk of causing death far greater. What's more important, half a day I'd your time or a criminal conviction that will screw your life up pretty good and the knowledge that you have killed someone.

(sorry OP not meaning yo put a downer on your day, I'm like one of those annoying former smokers preaching about quitting lol)

Whilst I respect how dangerous speeding can be I would hope that the police were focusing more on catching hard criminals such as paedofiles rather than drivers speeding

It's funny... Motorists who get caught moan that police should be chasing thieves. Thieves who get caught say police should be chasing drug dealers, drug dealers say police should be chasing paedophiles, who in turn think police should be locking up murderers...

I'm in total agreement that they should be targetting the more serious cases.

But, they still have to target speeders too.

There is not enough officers and quite a bit of red tape. Just because it doesn't make the news does not mean they are not arresting paedophiles/terrorists etc.

As Evie said, I didn't know the fines had gone up either. And I haven't a clue what the fines are.

Sorry for getting sidetracked OP.

I think the only advice is to contact the people who you got the fine from and ask if the course is available for you.

think you find most caught speeding is by camera van that are manned by civilians 90% of the time so to say this and that about the police is unproven, unless you are really flogging it down the road I would be surprised if a patrol car would stop you doing 35 in 30 limit too much paper work

O o O oo

There is always the people who think speeding isn't a serious enough crime for the police to persue...I wonder if it would be different if someone you know got killed or hurt by a speeder.

To the OP....I havn't had one but a person who has had the notice and a letter with it saying they could be offered it, he was, and he was doing 37 in a 30.

As much as the paedos deserve a pair of bricks administered repeatedly they are thankfully a rarity.

Absent minded/ I'm so important I need to get there quicker/ texting or chatting on a phone/ unisured/ drivers on bald tyres/ unaware how much room their heavy SUV needs to stop are sadly far more common.

There's a separate thread going where people are slaughtering the OP for doing 103 on a dual carriageway on his bike, a machine designed to get to fast speeds and stop quickly and safely.

Yet here we are moaning that the police enforce limits that are far more relevant. The extra 5 mph in towns is far more dangerous, and the impact on a young kid/old lady far more damaging than the thankfully minimal probability of getting into the clutches of a paedophile. 20 mph limits will creep in more and more, in some places for very good reasons.

Now, pass me those bricks I have work to do...

To be honest it's 30limits that I am most careful about. I think on big roads etc that limits are outdated and it's not as dangerous.

However In built up areas I feel they are too high .. mostly due to the fact that built up areas your more likely to get pedestrians...

My second eldest brother use to be a traffic officer and has seen some horrendous things related to speeding drink driving and fog. Worse one ever was attending an accident in 1978 that was a fatality just outside Bristol. What made it the worst you may ask. The fatality was our eldest brother. Poor driving conditions and speed never mix. I never drink if I'm driving and always keep an eye on my speed in built up areas and when conditions are poor.

people are quick to chastise the police for carrying out speed enforcement or parking enforcement but if you've ever attended a neighbourhood panel meeting the number one complaint is always traffic related (not burglarys, peedos etc).
