Holiday cancellation with insurance

Ellesmere Port

I wonder if any of you more experienced travellers can help with with something please?

So, a friend booked a holiday for 4 of us last year. The other 3 of us paid her our share.

I took out the holiday insurance the company we booked with offered around a month ago.

The holiday is in approximately a 5 weeks time, and I no longer want to go.

Now, I know I cannot claim on my insurance purely on not wanting to go

We have tried to sell my place to others, but no takers.

Does anyone know if/how it might be possible to claim my portion back?

Thank you

You can claim the tax component back on the flight if you don't go for any reason, even if you missed the flight!

Thank you. That won't be much though, will it?

All over

I am not sure how that could be possible. If you can't go then you lose the money unless your friend manages to get someone else. Even tben it depends if allowed to change names and are their admin fees etc. Sadly it sounds as you will be out of pocket. I hope it was not too much

"Kiss your money goodbye "

Yes, this is what I was already resigned to. Just thought I would check with people more knowledgeable

Its not a fortune, and my desire not to go outweighs what Im losing.

Someone has suggested via PM that if I have a sickness bug on the actual day of the holiday, I wont be permitted to fly, and would be able to claim that way.

Is this correct?

According to Citizens’ Advice…

You can cancel any time before the holiday starts but you’ll probably have to pay a cancellation fee. The fees should be in the terms and conditions. They’re likely to be higher if it’s close to the departure date. Contact the company if you can’t find your terms and conditions.

The company should only charge you the amount they’ll lose - they should try to sell the holiday to someone else. If you think they’re charging too much, ask how they worked out the cancellation fee.

Transferring your holiday

Think about whether you can find someone to take the holiday, as this might be cheaper than cancelling it. The person you’re transferring to must meet any conditions - like age restrictions.

Write a letter or email to the company telling them you want to transfer the holiday and giving the other person’s details. You’ll need to do this at least 7 days before the holiday starts.

The company must tell you how much it will cost to transfer. That cost must be reasonable and can’t be more than it costs them to make the transfer. They must provide proof of the cost.

You or the person you’re transferring to will have to pay the cost of transferring the booking. If the person you’re transferring to doesn’t pay, you’ll have to.
