Abs workout.

So my concentrated efforts at increasing my fitness and improving my core are starting to pay off and show but I've noticed that as far as my abs are concerned, it seems to be the upper ones that are being worked more than the lower.

I know I can Google this but personal knowledge and experience is better than Google. For you experienced people out there, what ab work do I need to do to work the lower section?

In that case, they must be stronger than I thought! I do lots of leg raises of various sorts but it always my upper abs that ache a bit after a session.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

On your back, legs up and bent at the knee so your lower legs are parallel with the ground. Then do a reverse crunch, that is use your tummy muscles to lift your legs towards your head. Its a tiny move so don't over do it. For double fun crunch your upper body towards your knees. Killer move but all your abs will ache after that. Don't forget to keep your abs drawn in by pressing the small of your back against the floor/mat/towel whatever you're lying on.

Standing crunches on a machine and elbow to knee sit ups, if you search for oblique and lower ab techniques you'll find loads of great tips.

YouTube is better than google because you can see what form you need to hold

few things..

- lay flat on your back and lift both or either leg to 6" above the ground, holding for a few seconds then repeating.

- sit with your bum on the floor and feet under something solid, then lean back to 45 degrees, hold then back up to sitting position

- feet under something solid, back on the floor, hands behind head and bring each elbow across to the alternate knee, holding when you get there

- hands under something solid, back on floor, then lift both legs as high as you can, holding and slowly coming back down

Do each until they burn then move to a different one and do until burn. Whilst they all work lower abs, they work them in slightly different ways so you should be able to sustain a good few repititions of each. Try to do 20 reps of each and rotate each exercise 3 times

If you want them to show its about lowering your body fat %, if you just want to work the lower abs the leg raises are a good exercise.

Ta! That's one I don't do so I'll give it a bash tomorrow.

I'm not really bothered about the look of my abs, more that after a year off work with an awful neck injury, I lost so much condition, it scared me. Mine will never show as I'm eight stones lighter than I was a few years ago and I have the resulting 'empty body' left over that only surgery will get rid of.

Thanks for both your posts. I do a lot of slow leg work; legs straight and raise from just above the floor to over my head and slowly down again. Lots of holding positions too.

Hooking my feet under something always feels like cheating!

No machine in my gym to do them and I used to love doing those.

Lose any belly fat first! Then work hard, sit ups, leg raising, crunches, etc!

I don't have any belly fat (nothing outside normal anyway) but I do have the empty, baggy tummy covering that comes from massive weight loss that will only be rectified by surgery. I'm not doing that.

its nothing to do with the exercises.

keep doing what you are doing and consume less calories.

The lower abs are always the last to show

All about diet

As I said, it's more to do with core strength than how I look as I'll never have a six pack. A strong core means a strong back and in my job, I need it.
