Us mugs who work get nowt and those who don't, seem to get everything handed on a plate - now laptops and free internet. That's great, they'll now be able to sit on their arses all day and surf the net. Oh no that's not true - they'll be usuing it to check the JCP website to search for a job Yeah - course they will

Mustn't complain though must we? I mean I now travel about 1000 miles a week to earn a living but at least I have my selfesteam back. "Similar situation, seasonal job, attempted applying for full-time work. I'd get bored easily ='over-qualified' (their words not mine) and my age, not stated, but off the record is hinted at. I qualify for no free aid or assistance because I have set aside money for my children. " Well, if I was you I would find a way to spend (not invest) this money, perhaps in jewelry so that it is gone, but is transferable back to cash quite easily. That way you can claim and still have a nest egg for the kids!

No one with a job is going to leave it just to get a £300 netbook! The point is that we don't agree with this wholesale spending of our money on stupid schemes that have no real benefit! And when we are still in a recession! How many of these will find their way onto ebay? Sorry, but when it comes to things other than food, shelter and the basics of life... Get out and earn the fooking money!!! Thing is, Gordon Clown knows he hasn't got to find the money, he will leave that problem for the next PM (but it could buy votes!)

I didn't expect anyone who was working would give up their job. Still ... i'm being serious. Those who are moaning can give up their jobs and get a free laptop and if they won't they could stop bleating that they had to buy their own. If your only reason for working is to have someone to treat as less deserving why work? Keeping others short of what is now a necessity for communication is not my motivation. As for getting out and earning the money ....obviously i've missed the bit where a glut of well paid jobs became available. I'll admit right here and now that I haven't read about the scheme or thought things through properly but I would prefer as wide a section of the population to be educated, to take part in as much as they can , to have a stake , to understand , to care. I don't want to be responsible for keeping others down and creating schisms and fragmentations. The same line of thinking proposed here would stop the payment of heating allowances to pensioners in case they ambled up to the bingo with it. Unemployment affects all sections of society and it is the least 'inelligent' the least 'cultured' and the least employable who are the most vunerable. Why kick them further? I tried phoning my post office last Saturday .. I was bloody furious cos the answer machine kept saying 'go online' everything you want is there. My docs apppointments are made online I bank online , tax my car, look for work ...etc etc ... I'd rather the money went to the unemployed than built another motorway. I'm off to read it.

"cool what do you think as a taxpayer?? x " I pay a lot of tax. I would prefer to pay tax to help my brothers in society than to line the pockets of fiddling politicians or white collar workers who know how to evade paying tax. Whether it goes on lap tops or nipple clamps is of no difference to me. Hmmmmmmmm strike that..... it's a big difference. Getting a lap top could help someone educate AND employ themsleves....... less of my money going on NHS and Prison services.

"This reminds me of an old lady we used to know. I was out of work but instead of sitting on my arse like most of todays unemployed do, I "worked" for a local charity. It was really sad to see Mrs Smith (names have been changed to protect the.. errr.... well someone!) having to dig into the modest amount of money her husband had worked hard all his life to save. He had also paid into an insurance policy, so when he died, she was just over £10,000 better off financially. Well, that put her way over the £6000 upper limit at the time for any help at all. Two doors down were another elderly lady we used to help (driving to appointments, shopping and the like). Her husband had pissed it all up against the wall and they had taken lovely holidays and he left her with nothing! Even the house wasn't theirs. She got every benefit going and was so much better off than Mrs Smith. This brings me back to this post and what the OP has typed about. Seems nothing has changed except for the worst in the 20 years since my story happened. If you piss it up the wall and smoke even though you can't afford it, don't worry. The rest of the population are there to help. If you look after yourself and your finances... Hard fookin cheese!!! " I've been volunteering with a local authority charity, they have offered to put me through various qualification courses in return for hour put in. I've been upfront with the dole office about my attempting to retrain for a new career in coaching but they are trying to stop me from volunteering - event though they won't actually fund the quals themselves! Not eveyone on the dole is a layabout, but some of us are at home despite wanting to volunteer!

"ya know, the one thing i hate more then anything else is the way people pre-judge and give u that "your on benefits so therefore ain't good enough to even be on the end of my boot" look they give u when u say ur out of work. i've been out of work for 6 years now, and haven't spent my time watching jeremy kyle and pissing me my money away on bingo nights out and endless bottles of lambrini. i've worked since i was 14, only leaving work to take care of my son when he was a year old and no one could look after him while i was working and as i was a single parent, i couldn't afford the nursery fees. in that time i've spend endless hours doing courses to improve my chances of finding work again, inbetween looking after other family members kids while they worked and becoming a carer for my grandparents. now i balace my house on less then 400 quid a week, which as anyone knows, is bloody hard work and yes, i've actually rang up this morning and appied for one of these free laptop and internet deals that the goverment is offering. main reason i;ve done this is because my son is 7 years old and basically has no computer skills. his last school had no computers and his school at the moment only offers half an hour computer time per week to him and thats hardly going to help him in this computer obsessed world. yes i take him to the library, we can normally get lucky and get one hour's worth of computer time every 2 weeks. and yeah, if we're lucky enough to get one, i may well use it to ebay items as that would help us out no end. i can understand yeah there is people out there that will abuse the chance they are getting but please spare a thought for those that will actually be using this scheme for good." I DARE ANY OF YOU WHO EARN £200 PLUS A WEEK TO TRY AND LIVE ON WHAT I GET. it's soul destroying it's humiliating, and it's not funny in the slightest to see your mates go out on a friday night and your stuck indoors because you can't even afford the price of a pint of let alone a pint of beer

They shouldn't be trying to stop you. From direct.gov "Volunteering shouldn’t affect your right to benefits, as long as the only money you receive is to cover your volunteering expenses, such as travel from home to the volunteering location. There are no limits on the amount of time you can volunteer for as long as you continue to meet the conditions of the benefit or tax credit you are receiving. For example if you receive Jobseekers Allowance you must still be actively seeking a full-time job, able to attend job interviews at 48 hours notice and available to work at one week’s notice. However, in most cases, if you volunteer full-time and receive an allowance from your volunteering organisation you will not usually be eligible to receive benefits. It is always advisable to discuss your choice of voluntary work with your benefits adviser before you start. Your benefits adviser will vary depending on the type of benefit you receive. It could be your local council (for benefits such as Council Tax and Housing Benefit), Jobcentre Plus or The Pension Service."

" ........ main reason i;ve done this is because my son is 7 years old and basically has no computer skills. his last school had no computers and his school at the moment only offers half an hour computer time per week to him and thats hardly going to help him in this computer obsessed world. yes i take him to the library, we can normally get lucky and get one hour's worth of computer time every 2 weeks. ............." I can't speak for Nottingham but a lot of local authorities use something called netloan to provide internet services to libraries etc. Netloan allows booking of slots. It might be worth checking if this is available near you.

"iv reread the posts and no one is actually being abusive about unemployment and the unemployed who are willing to work?? there is no disputin the fact that there are some who have sat on the dole that long that they will get a golden clock from the job centre when they go on to the state pension!! the people who have lost thier jobs because of the recession have my utmost sympathy the seriel dole dwellers dont and i dont care if that offends!!xxx like always you paint one you paint them all, as the unemployed are just that unemployed, it's a lable thsats covers many hundred's if not thousands of men and women, unfortunately the few again will spoil it for the many, and then theres all those who claim and receive DLA and are not entitled to it, because they can breath eat and sleep, thus making them a living human capable of working. remeber those among us who are unfortunate enough not to work for what ever reason, are no less a human being than the the working people. the only difference is that we the unemployed are a simple and easy target. the people you really want to be deridding are those who have absolutely no intension of working because they see it as their god given right to do so. i spent 27 years married and bought up a small family sometimes on a very low income, but i plugged on. now when i'm in the unfortunate postion to require others to help me in my hour of need, what do i see !!!!! or receive !!!!! to the first,,,,, people who look down at me like a leaper to the second,,,,,,, nothing other than a merger amount on which to live. I DARE ANY OF YOU WHO EARN £200 PLUS A WEEK TO TRY AND LIVE ON WHAT I GET. it's soul destroying it's humiliating, and it's not funny in the slightest to see your mates go out on a friday night and your stuck indoors because you can't even afford the price of a pint of let alone a pint of beer " your shoutin at the converted here, iv assisted a few people from here and lots from other places with forms from the dss etc. your on your high horse about this and let me assure you personally iv been on the dole iv also been the working poor working for the equivilent of 3 quid an hr when i was self employed iv raised a child single handly with no financial assistance from the father im one of those scourge of lone parents!! what would you rather have 15 quid more on the paltry benefits you recieve or a laptop? if i had the solution for mass unemployment we would all be at a swingin party in 10 downin street!!! i dont appreciate you tryin to make out i have somethin against the unemployed when i dont!!!

".........i still stand by my original thought the money could be better spent!! " Where would YOU spend the money? I'm happy to admit I'd like to see all the 0845 and 0870 etc rate numbers used by assorted official bodies/ GP surgeries and so on be changed in a way that'd allow calls to be made free of charge from mobile phones. I'd also like to see those bodies using 0800 numbers to make them free from mobiles too. A lot of people on lower incomes who need to contact these numbers no longer have landlines.

" Bearing in mind 1.2 billion is being spent on nuclear arms, wouldn’t we be better making sure that money is better spent than worrying about things that’s aimed at actually helping people. How would you spend it? It’s ok saying education and the NHS, but every time money gets pumped into these sectors the only thing that changes is the salaries of the staff.

"Similar situation, seasonal job, attempted applying for full-time work. I'd get bored easily ='over-qualified' (their words not mine) and my age, not stated, but off the record is hinted at. I qualify for no free aid or assistance because I have set aside money for my children. Well, if I was you I would find a way to spend (not invest) this money, perhaps in jewelry so that it is gone, but is transferable back to cash quite easily. That way you can claim and still have a nest egg for the kids! " I tied the money into trusts, my son can't touch it till he is 21 and neither would I, but I still get told because it's there I am entitled to nothing from the government.

"have you ever tried to appeal to the DWP or a tribuneral set up on their behalf, your guilty of having to much and theres no getting away from it, as trust funds can be broken, insurances can be cashes in, and private pension funds can be sold to companies who will buy them, and i've even heard of case's where a person living in a large house was told it was far to big for their needs so they should sell and downsize and use the the excess to finance themselves till they were either back at work or in a position to make a claim. the system is open to abuse by both the claiment and the operator of the benifit office, such is life, win or loose your barking at the possom " No, I haven't and I'm sure your examples are correct about your examples but I have a little bit of experience of how the various organisations which will support appeals and tribunals work. If a supported tribunal has been lost then there's probably no point. Tribunal judgements are rarely overturned by the Commissioners but anything short of a decision from a tribunal is worth revisting with proper professional (CAB, welfare rights office/ etc) help.

"Agree with every word your saying there polo, but the laptops is aimed at helping the children not the parents, wouldn’t you agree that its always better to try and do something than do nothing, even if a few might abuse the system. " think they would no that who ever provides them there broadband service if they get caught ie downloading etc or restricted sites that is unsuitable for younger kids i would think it be taking away an maybe even fine

"thatchers legacy lives on yet!!!! private pension?? no thanks il keep my money in a biscuit tin under the bed!! xx dont you mean Heath Thatcher hated free loaders was the labour party caused the unemployment in the 70s omg showing my age nope i mean thatcher and her private pensions that meant people paid into a private pension to find yrs later it was worthless and that people bought their houses and built a nest egg for their children only to find they had to sell house if they needed care and that the nest egg they worked hard for was pointless xx Tony B Liar took the money out of pensions! He retrospectively taxed pension pots to get more taxation, not long after he sold most of our gold reserves!!! Maggie may have extolled the virtues, but it was OUR choice and Labour took it away! yeah and it was maggie that put millions on the dole and destroyed the national industries for privatisation and started the benefit culture cause there were no other jobs for people and for future generations!! the selling off of gold i thought was brown but him and blair both off the same song sheet!xx" All of which could have been reversed by Tony B Liar! And he chose not to do that because it bought in loads of taxation....

" Actually according to Mr B a couple of the benefit (his selling points) are so parents who are too busy to go to parents evening can still keep up to date with whats happening and so they can access school reports online and so mum can look up ways to help little Johnny with his reading problems.... sorry but I fail to see why a laptop is a must for any of those. Reports on paper. Phone calls. How about the school actually telling mum how to help little Johnny with his reading and give her some support.

Mr. Babbage ? I've worked from leaving school, enjoy working for so many reasons, but can't find a bloody job to nearly suffice. Tell me about it. Worked at the same Co for 23yrs, made redundant in July & not found work since. I have an interview on Weds & really, really need to win. Lot of c@rp spoken on here about the unemployed Do you have a laptop tho ? What do you think i'm typing on??? I have a broadband connection because i'm locked into a BT contract that doesn't end til july so i have to pay it whether i work or not. The redundancy pay out is slowly shrinking and my mortgage insurance will run out in october."
