Has anyone seen details on how this will apply, how will they collect the information on how many miles everyone is doing and when will you get a bill for it.

Not sure the government has worked that out either. I have heard rumours it will be part of your car tax (whatever it’s called) renewal, and you will have to declare a mileage each year. But this sounds full of potential loop holes, like selling the car before the next tax renewal.

I guess it will possibly be linked to the MOT system in some way after three years. Before that I have no idea

Could be like your gas and electricity have to send in mileage readings each mth and they can check each mot if your upto date

MOTs won’t work, because first owners might never see the first MOT.

There was a law a few years ago to make all home chargers smart, I think they are called type2. These could be used to record energy consumption, but there is nothing stopping owners charging with a granny charger (I think they are type1) and they have no connected technology.

Either way it’s going to need a fair bit of work from the government to achieve.

There's a lot of unknowns....what if you go over to Europe and do a 5000 mile roadtrip over there, surely they cannot charge you for that. Similarly how will they charge people from overseas coming over to the UK.

Also with everything being electronic, I can see an explosion of people offering to reprogram the mileage.

They should of just put road tax on electric cars from the beginning...i understand they had to encourage sales and growth, just offer a bigger grant at purchase and put road tax on it like every other vehicle... But they had to fuck with the system and now they've got a "fucked" system...it obviously wasn't the the governments doing at the beginning, it was the powers that be...who are always there, regardless of which government is in power...it was like the scrappage scheme...it took millions of decent but cheaper cars off the road, to create a huge gap in the market that only the car industry could fill...wonder how big the brown envelope was for that one!??

In New Zealand you used to have to buy mileage for diesel - if you get stopped and have underpaid you get fined. Used to go on windscreen but could be an app 🤷‍♂️

Was on Preston last night.

People will need to provide an estimated mileage so they can pay with vehicle excise duty. It can then be checked at MOT. And they might bring in a mine mot for new cars.

Get border force will check cars in and out on mileage.

Totally agree even as a EV owner. But would also love all road based tax to be based on mileage. My classic does less than a thousand miles a year, but costs twice what my EV does to tax.

The heavier the vehicle, the higher the payments should be. They could combine it with a few for the absurd size increases that manufacturers have been adding to cars. It could help us to get size appropriate cars for our infrastructure again

There is no Road Tax. It’s all paid for out of general taxation. If you’re referring to VED then EVs are no longer exempt and are charged at standard rates to ICE cars.

Paying per mile is just yet another money grab from the Government. If something exists, sooner or later, politicians will find a way to apply tax to it.

If the do charge per mile the money they get must be spent on putting the roads in good order NO POT HOLES

in the old days car tax was spent on the road not like now on boat people out of the pot

Pay per mile abroad as well. Nonsense.

The Fri fill up with French fuel hmrc doesn’t get the tax from that. I feel that is a bit of an overreach.

I genuinely feel that this country is going down fast. I am privileged and can move to another country and wipe my hands of this place. I feel for those who cannot.

I was working it out.. they reckon the average person does 8500 miles a year… so it would work out at about an extra 250 pounds a year.. so 20 ish quid a month

I assume the easiest way to do it would be to collect the mileage between MOTs.. and then pay that amount over 12 months…..

however there is a push having to do MOTs from every year to every 2 years

Does anyone actually believe this country is even in a place to have roads full of electric cars? I mean if we all boiled the kettle at the exact same time, the power grid would shit itself and black out. So what chance have we got charging cars?

Theres a battery plant near me, which has been built to supply batteries for these electric vehicles. The national grid cant even supply enough power needed to run the plant without causing issues to the surrounding areas.

The government have dropped a ball, they've realises they can tax elec cars like fuel, so they've panicked and come up with some crap.

I believe given the amount of control the energy providers have on the charging of EVs, and our general decline in electricity consumption it would be possible for every house to charge an EV without issue. My car barely charges more than a few hours a week, depending on my mileage and solar production.

Someone must think that EVs are the way forward because Nissan are building the new version Leaf in Sunderland

With the car getting the full 3750 grant, this may finally be the UK game changer

The principle is correct but the application is terrible

All vehicles pay per mile already, for combustion engines it’s called fuel duty and electric it’s called VAT. The more ‘fuel’ you use the more you pay

VED is a fairly robust and established system, should have extended the same scheme to electric cars

As with all things government, don’t look at this, look the other way. What are they trying to achieve? More people on tax self assessment, a digitally connected car for mileage and speed?

Who knows ??

Surely the easiest way is to put reg and mileage in everyime you charge, similar to what you do if you have a company fuel card.

Or

Don't most of these appliances come with an app to control the vehicle.

Tax income from petrol and diesel vehicles, will fal, as drivers move from those to EVs. To retain the tax income, tax increases on petrol and diesel drivers could be increased astronomically or all vehicle could be subject to tax, related to usage.

Longer term the taxation will likely come on the electricity used for charging. The smart meter will identify exactly what portion of home electricity has been used to charge a car, and that electricity will be taxed as a vehicle fuel, and at a different rate to the rest on your bill.

In addition, at some point the average speed cameras will be used to have pay by use tolls for all.

From 2021 the law changed for all type 2 chargers supplied and fitted had to have smart features, that was the legislation the put in place the ability to charge based on electricity consumption.

But if you charge from solar you would not pay and they want as much as posable so are bringing in milage check at year 1 and 2.

3p for all electric and 1.5p for plug in hybrid.

Hybrid runs on fule so not included.

The other radical possibility is that as a country we reduce our 'household' spending to match our income and stop increasing the percentage of tax we pay.

In reality all that increased tax does is service our ever increasing government debt interest burden, overspending has to stop.

Another reason I won't be buying an EV until I'm forced to.

I'll stick with my free road tax diesel car thank you very much.

Yet again it's penalizing country folk who don't have a choice but to drive everywhere as there's no public transport.

EV’s are much heavier than regular vehicles so should pay more. However, it’s just a money generating tool to fuck the motorists as usual… people will be putting false plates on cars or whatever method to get round payment.

All over the place! Northwesr, , Southwest

Again, and as usual, government is short sighted, inept, and with no sense of balance.

Market forces is what should have determined EV sales, not government measures that would punish some in detriment of others who could afford to purchase new EV's, that incidentally, are more expensive new.

You would need a significant expansion of the current power grid and energy generation to accommodate a mass transition to EV. This hasn't been done. Relying on expanded capacity through green energy is asinine as it doesn't assure stability or long term sustainability. Spain found that out the hard way this summer.

Add to that the push for AI data centres, which are energy hogs, and you have a recipe for calamity.

I for one, am not at all sorry to see these measures as until now policy greatly benefited some, to the detriment of many, for far too long.

Electricity is subject to VAT so EVs already pay tax via that. If the tax receipts fall where they’re unable to price gouge petrol, perhaps they should start looking at shrinking the size of the state instead of increasing the taxation burden elsewhere. It’s starting to feel suffocating in that you can’t move for taxation these days.

Earn it? Taxed.

Spend it? Taxed.

Don’t spend it? Taxed.

Die? Taxed.

EVs aren’t uniquely heavy. The trend across the industry and consumers is toward larger and heavier cars.

The biggest seeking EV in the UK is the Tesla Model 3 which weighs in at 1,760kg.

The too 3 selling cars are in the UK now are:

Ford Puma; 1,394kg

Kia Sportage: 2,120kg

Nissan Qashqai: 1,935kg

I do fear this is a thin edge of the wedge, whilst I understand EV do need to pay a fair share, but without a doubt once the HM Revenue realises they can make money on pay per mile i can see that it will be extended across all vehicles (probably labelled a green levy or such). As it progresses to prevent “fraud and misuse” off the system technology will start being implemented, so suddenly black boxes will become a new standard. That along with our shiny new digital IDs, big brother truly will be watching

If you sell it then they will probably make you put the final mileage in the DVLA form. Both the buyer and seller have an interest in making sure the number is correct so they should allow the buyer to send their reading as well.
