I happened to overhear on this morning show a discussion about body sizes. I heard a woman say that just because you are a little on the curvy side and happy with your size, you aren't truly happy unless you are slim. She did come across as highly opinionated and stuck up.

My question is, if a woman is large and under happy, what are they unhappy about? Is it because they do not meet what the media says is the size to be ?

That's alongside Kate Moss saying 'nothing tastes as good as skinny feels'. Utter tosh. Bigger people are MADE to feel unhappy about their size by the expectations of society.

Naturally, if someone is unhealthy - as I was - then losing weight makes sense. But if you are pretty fit, active and healthy, your body shape is irrelevant.

And it is rather arrogant of someone to say another MUST be unhappy because of their size. If they are unhappy it is because of brainless and insensitive comments about their size from people who probably know nothing about them.

I think her point was based on the whole media idea of slim is happy and beautiful. Half of what the media is portraying is fake anyways, so kind of an oxymoron.

Yeah. She came across as rather self entitled and did speak down to the other woman on the show with her, just because she was a little bit more curvy.

The body has a natural weight and shape that is different from person to person. Being judged as unhealthy or unhappy just because of you're not of the societal ideal, means that they have a rather shallow and obscure view on what it means to be happy.

My bp was tremendously high (not simply as a result of weight, though it was a contributing factor) and my cholesterol was up too. I had to change my life or lose it. I was a serious stroke risk.

Normal people have normal problems. The media seems to love to show otherwise and want to add drama where it's not needed.

When you are overweight your risk of getting high BP, heart issues, diabetes etc is increased. It does not mean you WILL get any of these issues, just means you have a high risk of getting.

Yes, I know. Family history plays a part too. High cholesterol is in the family, along with diabetes, high bp, strokes and angina.

I think everyone would change something about themselves so nobody is truly happy. Not just bigger women. However, when meeting people, I do think in general, bigger women have more hang ups about their looks

Because they are made to feel that way. My ex was a Muslim. When I was carrying some weight a lot of the women were envious of me and especially loved my rounded face. They thought it made me look prettier. My sister-in-law was naturally skinny and hated herself for it. She would eat and eat, but was so active she simply burned it all off.

Our society, through media, send very very strong messages about what is deemed 'attractive'. If you don't fit this then you may be made to feel unhappy about your body.

Well naturally being human means you nit pick at minor thing. Some do have hang ups but not through their own doing. Constantly being told you need to look a certain way, to be able to live a certain way does get to people.

media contradicts itself alot when comes to weight.

they slag peeps off if skinny or big. yet go on about diets etc also.

when someone gains weight papers slate them, then when they loose it they still slate them! no win situation!

everyone is ment be different shapes and sizes..and in my oppinion if u have to go to the gym every day to look a certain way..then ur body aint ment look like that!

all shapes and sizes are beautiful as we all see things differently as too whats attractive and what isnt. so in reality...no matter body or shape we all attractive!

being slim makes you happy because its one less thing for you to worry about.

theres probably more good things about being slim than there are bad things.

when i was in my twenties i was slim,

i still worried about what i looked like though. i know people who are slim and they still lack confidence, you could be miserable because you cant eat what you like.

But we only worry about it because of society's perceptions. Slim people in other cultures are more unhappy because there they value being bigger! So being bigger makes you happy because it is one less thing to worry about in some cultures!

A bit yes and no. I'm slim too but was always wanting to be a bit bigger due to being teased about it. Only now I don't give a damn and realised that it's my body and just have to be happy with it.

I've listened to my mother tell me 'you'd be stunning if you were thin' for the last 20 years... you'd think she'd have got the message by now but I'm pretty convinced that she thinks I'm single because I'm a lardy arse. It's not just media that are responsible for the impression people seem to be under about weight issues... sometimes it starts closer to home.

Yeah. There are some double standards going about. Maybe on the man it is less appealing when they are quite hairy, only reason that comes to mind.

"Lets not go overboard with it people.

I'm happy that 'BBW' are happy within themselves but big isn't always beautiful. Infact, it often isn't. But the same applies to skinny as well"

This wasn't more on the bbw aspect, but rather the whole slightly large to larger body image and how one person's opinions and thoughts, meant that unless you are slim you may a well be lying to yourself.

"i just read about the article you mention on mail online, they were saying how nasty the slim lady was to the bigger lady.

i thought the big woman was as attractive as the slim woman.

i dont think there was any need for her to be so nasty."

Exactly. And the way she referred to her through body language and the comments did make me angry with her. So narrow minded and a shame that she gets to tell others how to live.

Oh God!!! Finally someone speaks some sense!!! Thank you x x x

There are beautiful people of all shapes and sizes, there are average people of all shapes and sizes and there are ugly people of all shapes and sizes. So what if they all want to say they are beautiful. Who are we to dictate?? Live and let live people!!!

In Your Bush

That woman on This Morning is one of the most odious people I have heard. She has been on breakfast tv before spouting her views on child care or something similar.

I personally think if your the kind of person who's unhappy with yourself you will be no matter what you look like

Ive never rated myself, I don't like my body, im your classic yo yo dieter my weights up and down all the time, no matter wether im a size 10 or a size 20+, and I have been both and all sizes inbetween several times thro out my life, im still never happy with myself

My sister has the figure most women would pay for, I look at her and see perfection, she's slim, toned, tall, no stretch marks etc but she's not happy with herself

Yet I have a friend whos a big lass and does not give to hoots about it, I have known her years and in all that time have never heard her comment about her weight, its not even something that seems to be a issue to her, she's very outgoing and confidant

I really don't think confidance and happiness comes down to your body shape, some people just are content some arnt

I was happy 2 years ago when I lost 4 stone, taking me from 16 stone to 12 stone and a size 12/14. 2 years on have put it back on clothes dont fit and am miserable because of that and am convinced that it is cause of no meets. am rejoining slimming club monday as that is the only way I can lose weight, plus will be going swimming again but taking it slower this time

The land of grey peas and bacon

I am plus size however funnily enough had an eating disorder which left me under 9 stones and an obsessive wreck..I'd rather be my size and not have to worry about when I need to vomit or can I eat a tube of cottage cheese or what not...

Maybe it is a cause but it's not the reason. You don't like being big so you won't be comfortable in yourself which translates on site any in any convo you have.

I am much heavier than you were before you lost weight and even though I don't meet guys anymore I still get lots of messages from both guys I have met before and haven't spoken to before. The difference is that I am confident in my looks and don't let's my flab get in the way (ok sometimes it gets in the way but I just lift it up and we carry up )

There are other reasons that don't help you but they aren't related to this thread and have been discussed before.

I love food, and my size reflects that I am not a fan of rabbit or bird foods.

My weight has been steady for the past few years, and all the clothes still fit, so I am happy.

I was big and said I was happy but I hated it. I had aches and pains and felt like crap. I lost weight and now I'm happier. I have big friends that pretend they are happy but they are miserable as hell. So yes, sometimes it is true.

indeed .. never been over 7 stone in my life and whilst some people like my body shape others don't.. I look like a prepubescent boy but some women envy me for it which is very strange

however whilst I would change things if I could the simple fact is that I cant so I tend not to dwell on it and just get on with what lot I was handed .. worse things happen at sea as they say !

with the moon n stars somewhere in gtr manc

I dislike the whole idea that all thin people are happy and all fat people are miserable.

I'm not miserable (all the time) and I'm sure as not happy all the time.

My slimmer sister is far from happy, as is my fatter sister (Naff all to do with weight).

People have different personalities and weight may be or may not be a contributing factor. It is a load of bollocks.

Some big ladies may be beautiful, but there are some damn ugly ones the same as slimmer ladies, some are beautiful and some a ugly too.
