How many miles go on your clock every year ?

I thought the average was 12,000 so how comes car dealerships seem to offer finance deals based on people doing 6,000 miles a year.

If someone lives in an urban area and does less than 6,000 miles a year, should they be looking at alternative modes of transport ?

Putting disabilities etc aside, I am talking fully able bodied people.

Are we just becoming lazy in relying on our cars ?

Is the public transport system integrated enough for people to be able to do without them ?

6,000 miles a year equates to about 16 miles a day.

I seem to chalk up somewhere between 15 and 18,000 and all that is is work and back, days out and the occasional business trip.

I certainly don't recall every doing less than 12,000

I only did 6000 odd miles last year I work prob 5 miles away which I could walk and it would take me half hour 45 mins working hours and being on call a lot means busses wouldn't work then there's being a taxi for the kids.

Because the finance deals at low milages means people who don't read the small print properly get stung with heavy "excess milage" bills!

The finance companies are usually onto a guaranteed winner - as many just hand the car back after 3 years and get a new one. It's in their interests therefore, to keep the mileage down - or at least recoup the additional depreciation of higher mileage vehicles by stinging the customer with high excess charges.

Public transport would be a viable option for those doing short commutes - if only it was both reliable AND affordable! Never ceases to amaze me that the rest of mainland Europe and much of the world has significantly higher quality (and waaaaay cheaper!) buses, trams and trains.

Oh - and approx 35,000 miles a year!

I guess I only do about 6k to 7k a year by car these days ....

But I easily clock up about 4 or 5 miles a day walking in all weathers and a good few miles cycling in the summer...

So I don't feel to guilty about still having a car.....

I commute two to three days per week a round trip of 115 miles, over a 45 week year that's over 12000 miles, and I can easily add another 5000 miles just running around ....

There's no integrated transport system outside of the cities, so there's no option for me but to carry on driving.

I work from home so dont have a commute and when I a travel to the office, I use public transport. My car is 15 months old and it had 7800 on the clock.

I mainly use mine for shopping, visiting friends and family etc, some who live an 80 mile round trip away. I dont consider it lazy, but I suppose it is an expensive convenience. A guilty pleasure.

Yup... my car is a total luxury. I'm lucky if I do 4,000 miles a year but I like having the choice to go places at the weekends.

About 15k per year includes commuting, daytrips and just the summer holiday easily clocks up 1000miles or more.

Public transport is shocking!! I don't drive so have to rely on it most of the time unless I get my dad to give me a lift, short distances ill happily walk but I've never known a bus be on time yet and a lot of them aren't very buggy friendly. Trains are also normally late but are easier to use with the buggy in tow but don't serve as many places as the bus. X

I just could not get to work on public transport as quickly or cheaply as I do by car. It's about 20 mile round trip per day. It would take an hour and a half (so 3 hours a day) and £60 a week by public transport. Instead, it costs me £30-35 in fuel and 30 minutes either way.

If I used public transport (which would mean a train and bus) it would take 15 hours over the week for the commute as opposed to 5 hours.

So my mileage is? Probably over 6000 in a year - maybe more depending on what other driving I do.

Since I've been in an LDR I'm bang on the average 12000 a year..........before then it was less than 5000 a year.

But with 3 kids there's no way I could be without my car.

I've done 1500 miles in the new car despite it having been a bit poorly. I do about 2000miles a month easy.

Normally about 8-10 but I got a new job last year and did 12k in about 8 months.

Most of that was personal, as my new base is further from home than in my previous job.

Most lease deals I see are for around 10k miles a year and then around 19/20p a mile anything over that

Average yearly car mileage used to be based on 12,000 per year. I thought it had been revised to 8,000 ? I do about 30,000 a year in mine.

i know what i'm talking about here so trust me on this, years ago the way a mileage was worked out to be below average average and high mileage was 12000 for the 1st 3 years and then 8000 per annum which was average mileage.

So on that basis a car done 4000 miles in 4 years is low mileage well really low mileage,a car or van done say 60000 in one year is extremely high milage and i see them do that no sweat,the best i ever had was a nearly 6 year old mondeo that was a absolute stunner with no marks or stone chipe etc,looked like a 40k miler and it had done 399,000 miles which worked out to 70,000 miles a year........ beat that lol

In mine I do about 2000 miles a year but I only use it for work and pottering about, my work place is about 4 miles and I could easily walk if I didnt work shifts. In hubby's car we do way more miles, do most of running about and long journeys in his.

crystal's last company car needs servicing every 20000 miles, think it had 2 in 6 months last year...

I don't own a car and rely on her lifts, public transport and my bike for work. It's 15 miles, I can do it in around 45-50 minutes on a bike, 20 minutes in the car. Public transport is noticably slower (mainly due to infuriating gaps between bus and train times) at well over an hour and costs £11 a day. Whilst being a huge advocate of public transport, I'd echo that outside of major cities it often isn't a practical option.

now not loads but when my 4 was away at schools boarding I would do 1000s running around over 20 .. happy days ,
