"Just been reading a report on the new drug for women, Lybrido, which is being hailed as the Viagra for women. On a programme this morning reporter Kelly Rose Bradford said that women should take it as they 'have a responsibility to keep their libidos high' for their partners. I am utterly astonished that this kind of comment could be spoken not only in the 21st century, but by a woman!" I'm not astonished. Having read some of the comments on the thread about lads mags, in which people seem unable to see that objectifying women sexually is a bad thing to be doing I'm not surprised that an impressionable woman would think that she would need to take a drug so that she is ever ready for her man. Am I the only one who can see the connection between pouting, breast thrusting babes in the newsagents and this?

"I didnt see the show so I am not gonna wade in with my own uninformed opinion, it does scare me to think that I could end up in a relationship where I still want sex and my partner doesn't. I really don't know what I would do in that situation " You don't plan for it. I know women who went from every night and twice on Sunday to not being able to even muster the energy for the goodnight kiss. It's not what they wanted either. The ones I know have seen their libidos return when life has improved and, importantly, their partner made the effort to show he still found them desirable.

"i dont agree with taking drugs like viagra realy, but i think women should make more of an effort to please their partners. women say they are tired, well hubby being at work all day gets tired too." When I was married I worked full time - a lot longer hours than my hubby. And I was also the main carer for my mother who was very severely disabled with MS. I would go straight from work to her house, cook her a meal, do jobs around the house which needed doing and then wash her, change her and put her to bed, like a baby. I would often get a call out in the middle of the night too - often at 3am and still have to get up at 6am to get ready for work. Needless to say my libido suffered. Some magic pill to bring it back would not have helped and would probably driven me to have either a stroke or heart attack - both of which would be likely as I also have hypertension. The idea that women have it easy is actually quite offensive.

"I actually read a similar story. Although there are differences in what was said in it. Isn't the guy supposed to get her horny? What does it say about the guy if the only way she can get the horn is with Viagra? " Women can lose libido and no matter what a man does she just may not get aroused. It happens.

I think you make a very valid point. There are all sorts of reasons that women lose their libido, medication, relationship problems, hormonal problems, stress...I could go on. Using a pill to re start it wont solve the problems that caused it. I can see its uses for specific cases but not because its a womans responsibility to keep her libido high for her man. I can't speak for men (not being one) so can't comment on viagra.

"In defence of men, and couples in particular. There are many men in long term relationships who lose their libido due to reasons outside the relationship They may well use drugs to balance out their libido to maintain their relationship. Why shouldn't women have the same option? No it's not a responsibility, No the drug companies should not play up the issue to sell more. But a loving couple with an imbalance of libido's either way would probably be pleased that there are alternatives that may or may not work for either or both partners. " I would agree. Many women really do genuinely SUFFER from a lack of libido. It can ruin their lives and it can happen to women who are relatively young - not just post-menopausal. Such medication may be the breakthrough they have been hoping for. But for anyone to suggest that it is almost a woman's 'duty' to take it for her husband (not for herself because women don't REALLY enjoy sex, they do it for their partners) is just so offensive it makes me want to scream! And I wish there was an angry face smiley!

"The key issue here, I think, is not that there is Lybrido, but rather the way in which this particular person presented its use - as 'a duty'. Which is fundamentally wrong. Just as wrong as if it had been said of men and Viagra. I can imagine that Viagra has saved many relationships and marriages. I would hope that Lybrido will do the same. There must be nothing more heart wrenching for someone to love someone but for a physical, mental or emotional reason cannot achieve a level of sexual desire to allow them to express that love physically. ...and for every person (be it male or female) gobbling these magic pills down like tic-tacs so they can go all night in a swinging club or an orgy, I choose to focus on the hundreds of people taking these drugs to help support and (sometimes) reclaim a part of their own emotional and physical well-being. Just because some asshat reporter has 1950's values, it shouldn't tarnish all the good that Lybrido could achieve. " Spot on

I was criticising the response of that particular reporter. I have no problem with the drug per se. Just people's attitude to it and to why women should use it.

I am utterly astonished that this kind of comment could be spoken not only in the 21st century, but by a woman! I'm not astonished. Having read some of the comments on the thread about lads mags, in which people seem unable to see that objectifying women sexually is a bad thing to be doing I'm not surprised that an impressionable woman would think that she would need to take a drug so that she is ever ready for her man. Am I the only one who can see the connection between pouting, breast thrusting babes in the newsagents and this?" I'm not surprised either, you only have to read some of the comments made by women on this thread!

" Unfortunately I think you're right, and which is why so many people....mainly guys don't understand why they get poor responses to requests for 'fancy a shag'. We live in a very sexualised society, some may say liberated, but its a shame that over exposure results in pressure on both sexes to be something or possibly face being branded as a prude or the astonishing stigma of not fulfilling their duty ! Objectifying womenis a bad thing...fact. the sooner those folk realise that women who believe this aren't bra burning nutters, the sooner they will realise, they may have better experiences by engaging in the woman's interests too? Lets face it there are numerous reasons for taking viagra or this female alternative, and its main reason was to assist those who suffer poor libido, or have medical conditions. If someone feels they have to take it, or act out of a sense of duty, then they really need to look at the person requesting them to do so and realise they are rather self centred. Just realised its Thursday
