The thread about pocket money got me thinking, does anyone else remember going to the cinema and paying to get in by handing over a tin of food. I do!!!

Anyone remember getting 10p back on pop bottles?

I and my cousin had a good racket going, but we were constantly fighting a "turf war" with the twins from down the road!!

We used to nick..... erm, I mean scavenge the bottles from pubs etc and go door to door, with our three wheel trailer, we paid a penny to anyone who would sell us their bottles, saved them a trip.

We used to go door to door asking for newspapers which we took to the chippy for a bag of chips .. !!

Can't use newspaper any more for chips.

Yeah we had a great mobile chippy years ago. It was an old clapped out van with a coal fired range inside. Christ you always knew when he was there - the black smoke and shite that came out of the top was nobodys business, but the chips were great - cooked in good old fashioned lard of course

The guy progressed to a shop after that, his chips were still good, but we missed the old van

The chippy van still goes round my area and they will wrap up in newspaper if you supplied your own.

Cheap as well £3.50 for a fish supper!!

The chip van still comes round rural Cornwall too, but only on Saturday afternoons.

Don't remember paying to get in the flicks with food though and I'm a old f**ker of 52. We used to pay 3d for Saturday afternoon kids club.

ironic really our local chippie sells rolls and newspapers on a sunday morning as the other shops shut!

wrapping cooked foods in newspaper was banned because it was deemed that the ink used in the print was poisonous.

The sad thing was they even banned the black country museum for wrapping chips in newspaper for the same reason.

They also banned them from selling the bread and sweets they made in the old ovens because they didnt meet EU standards.

Surely a simple sign pointing out that as it WAS a museum the equipment didnt meet EU safety standards and that you bought them at your own risk

Some Chip shops have started using a special "copy" of old newspapers that use a non hazardous print method but it is expensive to buy and isn't quite the same.

Hate the modern pram cos the wheels are totally unsuitable for making go-carts.

Miss the running boards on my Dads first car cos we liked playing gangsters.

I stand corrected, he says it was his Rover with the running boards, the Mayflower had two handles for opening the boot.
