The Language of.....

I've just started learning Spanish again, and it's reminded me how much I love diving into a new language, even though English itself is endlessly fascinating to me.

There's something special about learning another language when you already appreciate your own.

You start seeing what can and can't be expressed in your native tongue, and you discover entirely new ways of thinking.

So I'm curious...

What languages do you speak besides English? And what language would you love to learn, if you could?

I find Italian incredibly melodic and lyrical, although I'm immensely rusty and need to refresh my memory using one of the many online language sites that are available

I can say “hello, my name is (. .) and I live in Wales. Can I have a bottle of lemonade please. Thank you. Bye”

In French. If that counts

BSL. I’ve been avoiding my deafness for 40 years and so it was a big step to be brave enough to learn but I’m picking it up pretty well.

I used to go to Italian classes, in a small group and it was great. One thing and another meant I had to give it up, but I loved it.

Shamefully I did 3 years of French at High School and one year of German before binning them both off when I selected my GCSEs. And I know some holiday Spanish 🫣 I wish I'd spent more time learning languages when my brain was younger.

I really enjoy watching foreign dramas with subtitles so if I started learning that would probably help 🤔

Punjabi and also Makaton. I'm embarrassed to admit that my Makaton is now becoming increasingly rusty, when once upon a time it was polished and discernible.

I'm fluent in Spanish, I lived in Spain for a decade before moving to the UK.

I love my language, it helps me connect with people who also speak it , I can consume double the content online as well as my catalogue for entrainment is wider.

There's many upsides, I'm currently working on learning Italian so I can speak with my Italian friends.

It's fun, once you learn a language others become easier.

If you learn Spanish, going to Portuguese and Italian is much easier as there's similar grammar, spelling or sentence structure

It's all upsides!!

This is amazing. My friend learnt bc of her father was going deaf. It lead her to an amazing career unknowingly

I speak, read and write Afrikaans. Growing up in South Africa in the 70s and 80s, it was a bilingual country and half of everything was in Afrikaans. Nowadays SA has 11 official languages, so god knows what they're teaching.

I also know a smattering of Zulu.

I also speak German, albeit very rusty now, as I took it at uni, and worked there after uni.

🧛🏻‍♀️

Somewhere in the middle not the.....

Enough German, Spanish and French to order something. Used to be pretty good at Makaton as I learned it to help with my youngest. I'd love to learn BSL mostly due to the work I do.

The main part of the reason I'm learning it is to keep the brain going as I get older. Maybe go back to it

I'm re-learning French. I used to be really good at school, and once you stop you forget!

I can get by on holiday with French and Spanish, that's it.

I studied Spanish and French at school. A scheduling conflict meant I had to choose one over the other and I went with Spanish. At one point as an adult I completed the duo lingo tree in Spanish and I'd be doing things and narrate my activities in my head in Spanish 'I'm painting the fence' was the one that hit home how much I'd integrated the language. But now I feel like I have such a low grasp on Spanish at all.
